'Life of Chuck' movie chases the meaning of life, loss and love
LOS ANGELES - Before finishing the science-fiction drama film "The Life of Chuck," English actor Tom Hiddleston and American director Mike Flanagan had a conversation about life, death and existence.
'I think went far deeper than just about any conversation I can recall having with an actor,' Flanagan told Reuters during an interview in Los Angeles.
For both Hiddleston and Flanagan, the core of the movie, based on author Stephen King's 2020 novella of the same name, is understanding the essence of being alive.
'I loved the wisdom in the story,' Hiddleston said.
'This idea of holding onto the people you love and the people who matter, because you never know when it'll all end, and to have the courage to live as fully as you can with what you have,' he added.
The film produced by Intrepid Pictures, FilmNation Entertainment, and WME Independent arrives in theaters on Friday.
The story follows Charles "Chuck" Krantz, whose life story is told chronologically backwards, depicting the influence he has on the world and also how the world influences him.
The movie explores existentialism, death and loss, and the apocalypse, fitting the thematic elements that both King and Flanagan are known for.
The cast includes Hiddleston as Chuck Krantz, Mark Hamill as Chuck's grandpa Albie Krantz, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Karen Gillan as ex-spouses Marty Anderson and Felicia Gordon.
Beyond the supernatural themes, Hamill believes the messages of 'The Life of Chuck' delve into current real-world divisions.
'I really think it's the perfect timing for this movie, because we are so divided as a nation, and we are dealing with just one outrage after another,' he said.
'It's almost frightening to open up your computer every day and see what's happened now. And so, I think this movie couldn't arrive at a better time. It's almost therapeutic,' he added.
Similarly for Hiddleston, it was imperative that the movie offer something joyful despite the moments of loss throughout the story. This included a big dance scene from Hiddleston.
The "Hush" director said that the dance scene was the first thing they filmed for the movie and made him realize that the 'explosion of joy' was the 'heart of the story,' that would hold everything together.

Due to the vehicle's speed—estimated between 60 and 80 km/h—it was impossible to brake in time, resulting in a rear-end collision with the lorry. Father was not wearing a seatbelt Shine's father, C.P. Chacko, was seated in the back seat without a seatbelt. Aneesh explained that the force of the impact caused C.P. Chacko to hit his head against the back of the driver's seat, resulting in a fatal injury. A passing vehicle was used to rush him to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way. Aneesh added that Chacko was conscious and moaning until they reached the hospital. Shine Tom Chacko and family had reportedly left Ernakulam around 10 PM the previous night and were headed to Bengaluru via Salem, following an earlier course of treatment in Thodupuzha. Author Stephen King, ahead of The Life of Chuck film's release: I'm a chipper guy, I get rid of all dark stuff in books
So vividly drawn is writer Stephen King's fiction that it has already been the basis for over 50 feature films. For half a century, since Brian De Palma's 1976 film Carrie, Hollywood has turned, and turned again, to King's books for their richness of character, nightmare, and sheer entertainment. As the adaptation of his 2020 doomsday novella gears up for a cinematic release, the author says, 'In The Life of Chuck, we understand that this guy's life is cut short, but that doesn't mean he doesn't experience joy... Existential dread and grief and things are part of the human experience, but so is joy.' The 77-year-old has penned around 80 books, which have often been fodder for the movies and the author is a self-confessed moviegoer. 'I love anything from The 400 Blows (1959) to something with that guy Jason Statham,' King says, speaking by phone from his home in Maine (United States). He adds, 'The worst movie I ever saw was still a great way to spend an afternoon. The only movie I ever walked out on was Transformers (2007). At a certain point I said, 'This is just ridiculous'.' Adding how he's always happy writing, King adds, 'I'm a very chipper guy because I get rid of all that dark stuff in the books.' Dark stuff, such as the kind of climate change disaster found in The Life of Chuck, which King says often dominates his anxieties. 'We're creeping up little by little on being the one country who does not acknowledge it's a real problem with carbon in the atmosphere. That's crazy. Certain right-wing politicians can talk all they want about how we're saving the world for our grandchildren. They don't care about that. They care about money,' he opines.
