'Life of Chuck' movie chases the meaning of life, loss and love

Hindustan Times04-06-2025
LOS ANGELES - Before finishing the science-fiction drama film "The Life of Chuck," English actor Tom Hiddleston and American director Mike Flanagan had a conversation about life, death and existence.
'I think went far deeper than just about any conversation I can recall having with an actor,' Flanagan told Reuters during an interview in Los Angeles.
For both Hiddleston and Flanagan, the core of the movie, based on author Stephen King's 2020 novella of the same name, is understanding the essence of being alive.
'I loved the wisdom in the story,' Hiddleston said.
'This idea of holding onto the people you love and the people who matter, because you never know when it'll all end, and to have the courage to live as fully as you can with what you have,' he added.
The film produced by Intrepid Pictures, FilmNation Entertainment, and WME Independent arrives in theaters on Friday.
The story follows Charles "Chuck" Krantz, whose life story is told chronologically backwards, depicting the influence he has on the world and also how the world influences him.
The movie explores existentialism, death and loss, and the apocalypse, fitting the thematic elements that both King and Flanagan are known for.
The cast includes Hiddleston as Chuck Krantz, Mark Hamill as Chuck's grandpa Albie Krantz, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Karen Gillan as ex-spouses Marty Anderson and Felicia Gordon.
Beyond the supernatural themes, Hamill believes the messages of 'The Life of Chuck' delve into current real-world divisions.
'I really think it's the perfect timing for this movie, because we are so divided as a nation, and we are dealing with just one outrage after another,' he said.
'It's almost frightening to open up your computer every day and see what's happened now. And so, I think this movie couldn't arrive at a better time. It's almost therapeutic,' he added.
Similarly for Hiddleston, it was imperative that the movie offer something joyful despite the moments of loss throughout the story. This included a big dance scene from Hiddleston.
The "Hush" director said that the dance scene was the first thing they filmed for the movie and made him realize that the 'explosion of joy' was the 'heart of the story,' that would hold everything together.

Indian Man, Married To US Woman, Gives Hilarious Take On Love Vs Arranged Marriage

A video of an Indian man's witty reply on love versus arranged marriage with an American wife has gone viral, highlighting the differences between Indian and American perspectives on marriage. The video was shared on Instagram by the couple, Deepak and Hannah, with the caption, "It was definitely an arranged marriage." Watch the video here: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Deepak and Hannah (@deepakandhannah) In the video, the couple can be seen discussing the unusual questions they often face after getting married to each other. Deepak asked his wife, "What's the weirdest thing people ask you after getting married to me?" Hannah said social media users often ask, "If I have a sister for them to marry." She also said that users are interested in babies. She then asked Deepak the same question. He replied jokingly that people ask whether their marriage was an arranged or a love marriage. He said, "How can it be possible? Like my parents went to Michigan, America, to find a woman for me? Of course, it is a love marriage, guys." Arranged marriages are common in India, with parents playing a vital role in selecting partners based on factors like family background, income and social standing. Meanwhile, American culture focuses on individual choice, with people often selecting partners based on personal compatibility and love. The post also suggests that the couple likely faced challenges navigating these cultural differences, but their experience may also have brought benefits. Here's how social media users reacted "Sisters hahah get it all the time too!!! You're so cute, guys." one user wrote. "I get it though. My kids are half Indian and they are bloody adorable...... just saying," another said. "Agree with the asking to set up with family members or anyone from US. Those are such strange messages to receive. We like to joke our marriage was self arranged," a third added.

As dengue cases rise, health dept holds house survey, awareness drives

1 2 Jamshedpur/Ranchi: With the number of dengue cases touching 34 in the Jamshedpur urban circle, the East Singhbhum health department officials said they were focusing on door-to-door campaigns to detect dengue larvae and generate awareness among the residents to curb the spread of the vector-borne disease. In Ranchi, too, the health department intensified surveillance to monitor mosquito breeding and prevent the outbreak of dengue. Between June and August 14, a total of 5,639 houses were inspected, out of which 876 were found to be breeding mosquitoes. Similarly, 39,058 containers were checked, and 1,154 were reported positive for larvae. No dengue cases were reported at the sadar hospital. On August 16, a special surveillance was carried out at Nijam Nagar and Hindpiri, where 20,025 houses were inspected. Out of these, five houses were found to have breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Additionally, 115 containers were examined, with 405 showing larval presence. State programme officer of vector-borne diseases, Dr Birendra Kumar Singh, said, "Inspections are critical in breaking the mosquito breeding cycle. Citizens have been urged to maintain cleanliness in and around their homes, regularly check water containers, and cooperate with the field staff to curb the spread of dengue." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo East Singhbhum civil surgeon Dr Sahir Pall said, "We are focusing on mass awareness on do's and don'ts to eliminate the root cause of dengue. School and college students will be involved in awareness drive." The strength of teams of the multi-purpose workers (MPW) will be increased for the door-to-door detection of dengue larvae. Dengue larvae were detected in over 13,000 houses in August. "We will review the progress of the survey work and, accordingly, increase the number of MPW teams," Pall said. Dengue cases this year have been reported mostly from the suburban Chota Govindpur, while the core urban circle has reported comparatively fewer cases. The dengue data as of August 15 suggested that 860 samples were tested, out of which 36 cases were positive, including two cases from outside the district. Five dengue patients are undergoing treatment at a hospital. Chota Govindpur has reported 18 cases, while Telco and Mango are registering four and three cases. Additionally, single cases have been reported from seven different areas of the town. The civil surgeon said that all hospitals have been instructed to ensure that blood samples of suspected dengue cases are referred to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme centre at the earliest. "The sooner the laboratory test of the sample is done, and if the report is confirmed positive, swift follow-up can be taken up both at the medication level and in the field," Pall added. Under its action programme, the 100-meter radius surrounding the house of the infected person will be swiftly covered, and house surveys and anti-larval activities will be taken up urgently. Tata Steel Utility and Infrastructure Services Ltd (TSUISL), along with Tata Motors, Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC), Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) and Jugsalai Municipal Council (JMC), are carrying out garbage cleaning work and following it up with anti-larval activity daily in their respective command limits.
