K-pop megastars RM, V released from army, promise BTS reunion
SEOUL: K-pop supergroup BTS members RM and V were discharged from South Korea's military on Tuesday after completing their mandatory service, as fans counted down to the band's full comeback, with more members set to complete their national duty later this month.
Cheered by dozens of fans near the military base, the two members, dressed in their army uniforms, saluted the crowd and said they would soon return to performing.
"To all the ARMYs who have waited for us while we were in the military, I want to say I am truly, truly grateful. Please wait just a little longer and we will return with a really cool performance," V told fans and media. Known as ARMY, BTS's global fan club comprises millions of loyal followers.
Two other bandmates, Jin and J-Hope, were discharged from the military earlier and have since been performing solo and appearing on variety shows.
Jimin, Jung Kook, and Suga are expected to complete their military service by 21 June, according to media reports.
The globally renowned K-pop icons have not released a group project since 2022, and the members are looking forward to a reunion.
"After pursuing our own little ventures, we are now coming back together, and I love that for us," J-Hope told a magazine in December.
Entertainment group HYBE, which manages BTS, is planning a major event called BTS FESTA this week for fans to celebrate the band's 12th anniversary. It remains unclear whether all the members will appear, although Jin attended last year's event.
Shares in HYBE rose 2.3% as of 02:11 GMT, reaching their highest level in more than three years.
Holding a bouquet of flowers to mark his discharge, RM said he was most eager to return to performing.
"I think the other members feel the same, but for me, performing on stage is what I miss the most. I'll work hard to produce an album soon and get back on stage," RM said, after playing the saxophone for the crowd.
Fans from across the globe flew to South Korea to celebrate the return of their "life-changing" stars.
"It is just absolutely joyful. That's now four out, two more tomorrow, and then Suga. Then we have OT7 – we have our seven kings back with us," said Philip Darbyshire, a 72-year-old Australian fan, referring to the group's seven members.
"It is just wonderful."

Golf-Aussie Day sports American stars and stripes shorts at U.S. Open
Jun 9, 2025; Oakmont, Pennsylvania, USA; Jason Day signs an autograph during a practice round for the U.S. Open golf tournament at Oakmont Country Club. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images OAKMONT, Pennsylvania (Reuters) -Australian Jason Day, already known for his loud outfits on the golf course, turned heads again on Tuesday when he showed up for U.S. Open practice at Oakmont Country Club sporting a loose-fitting pair of red, white and blue American flag shorts. To complete the patriotic all-American look, which seemed more suited for a U.S. Fourth of July barbecue than a practice for a men's major, Day wore a quarter-zip jacket that featured a blue and white star-lined collar. Former world number one Day, who left Nike in early 2024 to join Malbon Golf, had some bold ensembles ready for this year's Masters but said that week he changed his plans after Augusta National requested he dress in a more reserved way. At the 2024 Masters, Day wore baggy blue pants and a loud sweater vest that featured "No. 313. Malbon Golf Championship" in large block letters across the front when he showed up on the Friday to complete his first round alongside Tiger Woods. But when the 2015 PGA Championship winner showed up for the second round later that day, the vest was gone and he later said tournament organisers had asked him to remove the garment.
