Khachanov topples Zverev to book Toronto title clash with Shelton
TORONTO, Canada: Karen Khachanov rallied to defeat top seed Alexander Zverev and book an ATP Toronto Masters title clash with Ben Shelton, who beat second seeded Taylor Fritz on Wednesday. Khachanov fought back from 3-1 down in the final-set tiebreaker to beat Zverev 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4). Shelton, seeded fourth, hammered Fritz 6-4, 6-3 in the first All-American Masters 1000 semifinal in 15 years to book the fifth, and most important, ATP final of his career. Russia's Khachanov, seeded 11th, had lost two previous semifinals in Canada. But he dug deep to advance, saving a match point as he levelled the deciding set at 6-6, with world number three Zverev hammering a backhand into the top tape of the net. The German committed 44 unforced errors in the nearly three hour defeat while Khachanov had 29 winners and 34 uforced errors. "I had to work out this match, dig deep and try my best," Khachanov said. "It was very demanding physically and mentally. "We've had a lot of matches and I'm happy to beat him after losing some easy ones," addd Khachanov, who fell to Zverev in the Tokyo Olympic singles final. "Today was a tough one - I was match point down. "I'm just happy things went on my side at the end." Khachanov said it got tense at the end. Ben Shelton (USA) hits a ball to Taylor Fritz during semifinals at Sobeys Stadium. — Imagn Images "When you reach the final tiebreak, you have to play your best. You can't waste time and energy with negative thoughts or you won't succeed. You never know what will happen but you have to give it a try." Khachanov will be playing his first final of the season after semifinal defeats in Barcelona and Halle. Shelton and Fritz had to wait out a brief delay when a problem with the electronic line calling system emerged as they took the court. But that was barely a blip for 22-year-old Shelton, the world number seven, who had beaten Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals and with the win over Fritz notched his first back-to-back victories over top 10 opponents. US Open finalist Fritz had to save four break points in the third game of the match and was broken in the ninth game to leave Shelton to serve for the set. Shelton seized a second break for a 3-2 lead in the second, landing a perfect lob over Fritz's head and held at love for a 5-3 lead. He closed out the masterclass in with another break, Fritz mangling his racquet over his knee after he double faulted on match point. "I'm happy with my level and how I executed," Shelton said. "I've seen so many big improvements in my game this week. That's what I'm most happy about, how I'm executing, how little I'm hesitating, how I'm returning. "Beating two top 10 guys back-to-back is huge for me. "I felt I had the ball on a string," he added. "I'm excited to play like this, hitting the ball and expecting it to go in." — AFP

Jihad bin Abdullah al Sheikh, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors, confirmed that the team's preparations are progressing positively, noting that the players began assembling at the start of July. New players have been carefully selected to strengthen the squad, in consultation with the club's football committee. He explained that the club has retained the team's core by renewing the contracts of most players, while also working to address gaps identified in last season's line-up. He added that the squad now consists of 26 players, including young talents from the Olympic team alongside experienced players, with the aim of nurturing youth and providing them with the necessary experience for upcoming seasons. He also indicated the possibility of adding more players in the coming days, pending the technical staff's evaluation and approval. Al Sheikh expressed optimism for a strong season, stressing the club's respect for all league competitors, such as Seeb, Al Nahda, Al Shabab and Dhofar. He affirmed that Oman Club will be a strong contender against these teams. The team recently held a 10-day closed domestic training camp, which included morning and evening sessions to boost players' physical and technical readiness ahead of the league's kickoff. HIGH TECHNICAL AMBITIONS For his part, Idris al Mourabti, head coach of the first team, expressed his happiness to return to leading the team, confirming the club's ambition to maintain the strong performance shown in recent seasons. 'Last season we finished the league in third place, and this places a great responsibility on us to remain in the top positions and compete strongly this season,' he said. Al Mourabti praised the players' discipline and cooperation with the technical staff during the preparation period, affirming that the coaching team is working to develop the players' technical, skill, and mental aspects. 'Our ambition this season is even greater, and we thank the management for appointing coach Idris al Mourabti, who is a great technical asset to the team. We aim for this season to be a fruitful one after achieving third place last season,' he said. Al Ashri stressed that the team will enter the league with the ambition to compete for the title, despite the strength of the competition. He acknowledged the pressure, as is the case with all clubs, but emphasised that the team is determined to achieve positive results, starting with their opening match against Dhofar, which they view as a final before the league's break. Al Nahda edge Olympic team to clinch Khareef Cup
MUSCAT: Al Nahda were crowned champions of the Kahreef Football Tournament after defeating the Oman Olympic national team on penalties in the final match, held at Al Saada Sports Complex in Salalah under the auspices of Sayyid Nadir bin Al Julanda al Said, Secretary-General at the Diwan of Royal Court. The final began with clear tactical caution from both sides, as each team spent the opening minutes reading the opponent's movements and attempting to control the midfield. Al Nahda looked more active in attack through the movements of Mohammed al Ghafri, while the Olympic team relied on short passes and quick runs from Masoud al Bahri and Mohammed Bait Subeea. In the ninth minute, Al Nahda thought they had opened the scoring through Al Ghafri, who followed up a cross and slotted it into the net. However, after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed for a foul on the striker. This decision fired up Al Nahda, who continued pressing, while the Olympic team relied on counter-attacks, exploiting the speed on the wings. Al Nahda's players receive the trophy. The match continued with alternating control until the 29th minute, when Al Nahda broke the deadlock through Al Ghafri, who capitalised on a precise cross that slipped past the Olympic defenders and placed it into goalkeeper Ibrahim al Kindi's net. After the goal, the game's tempo increased, and the Olympic team sought a quick reply. In the 35th minute, Majid al Mashaikhi unleashed a powerful shot that Al Rashidi saved superbly. The final minutes of the first half saw sustained pressure from the Olympic team, but Al Nahda's defence stood firm, ending the half 1-0 in Al Nahda's favour. At the start of the second half, Al Nahda's coach made a tactical change, bringing on Ali al Hinai for Al Azhar al Balushi to strengthen the midfield and control play. Meanwhile, the Olympic team increased their attacking push. In the 52nd minute, Mohammed Bait Subeea fired a powerful shot just over the bar, followed by sustained pressure on Al Nahda's flanks. Al Nahda sought to exploit the spaces left behind and nearly doubled their lead in the 60th minute when Al Ghafri's counter-attack strike went just wide of the post. The Olympic team continued their pressure, prompting coach Badr al Maimani to make attacking changes in the 68th minute by bringing on Abdulhakim al Rawahi and Said al Ghanbousi to energise the frontline. Oman Olympic team finished runner-ups of the khareef tournament. LATE EQUALISER In the 70th minute, Luqman al Hadidi launched a fierce strike that Al Rashidi brilliantly saved. Al Nahda did not sit back and tried to secure the win in the 75th minute when Al Ghafri headed a cross narrowly wide. The pressure persisted until the 83rd minute when Olympic team captain Mohammed Bait Subeea equalised after a scramble in the penalty area, slotting the ball into the net. The score remained 1–1 at the end of regular time, sending the match to penalties. Al Nahda triumphed 4–3 in the shoot-out. Ahmed al Kaabi, Jumaa al Zaabi, Al Faraj al Kiyoumi and Harib al Saadi scored for Al Nahda, while Nasser al Saqri, Mohammed Bait Subeea and Said al Ghanbousi scored for the Olympic team. After the match, the guest of honour presented Al Nahda with the tournament trophy and gold medals, while the Olympic team received silver medals. The refereeing and administrative teams were also honoured, and the chairman of the Oman Football Association presented a commemorative gift to the guest of honour.
