October 2025: New deadline for Chandigarh Railway Station revamp
In the meeting, minister Bittu instructed officials to speed up the pending work and minimise the inconvenience caused to the public during rush hours. Around 81% of the redevelopment work is complete, and the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) aims to finish the ₹ 462 crore project by October 2025. The redevelopment work, which began in January 2023, missed its first completion deadline in May 2024 and another in May 2025. No clear reason has been provided by the RLDA for the continued delays.
Due to the ongoing project, passengers have been facing many problems, including the lack of escalators, lifts, and ramps, as well as having to walk on uneven surfaces and walk an extra 100 metres because of pick-and-drop charges. During rush hours in the afternoon, a chaotic traffic situation is seen at the station, which has a daily footfall of over 37,000 passengers.
The redevelopment project of Chandigarh railway station is being executed by the RLDA under the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) model. The project aims to transform the station into a modern, world-class multimodal transit hub serving the Chandigarh Tricity region. The total development area of the station is 1,92,248 sq metre, with a built-up area of 27,383 sq metre.
Expanded parking, lifts, escalators and much more
There will be new G+3 station buildings on both Chandigarh and Panchkula sides, each covering an area of 8,367 sq metre, aimed at improving accessibility and passenger movement. A covered concourse of 72m wide and 80m long will connect the station buildings and provide weather-protected transit across platforms. Another two 12m wide foot over bridges will also be constructed for inter-platform movement.
The parking will be expanded on both sides with an area of 24,515 sq metre with integrated traffic flow designs for both city sides. The station will have 30 lifts and 10 escalators for barrier-free movement. Enhanced waiting areas i.e. 1,180 sq metre concourse with 1,050 seats, food courts, retail spaces, retiring rooms, co-working spaces, paid lounges and other commuter-focused amenities. There will be a 4,000+ sq metre of commercial area, including kiosks, food outlets, and shopping spaces. The upgraded Chandigarh railway station is designed to cater to a projected daily footfall of over 1 lakh passengers by 2061.

Tharoor raises delinking of BrahMos Thiruvananthapuram unit from parent firm in Parliament
Shashi Tharoor, MP, has drawn the Union government's urgent attention to the reported move to delink the Thiruvananthapuram unit of BrahMos from the parent BrahMos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd. (BAPL). Raising the matter under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha, Mr. Tharoor called for the intervention of the Ministry of Defence and the Union government to protect BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Ltd. (BATL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of BAPL, considering its strategic importance. Mr. Tharoor urged the Union government to ensure that either the BATL, located in his parliamentary constituency, remained under the Indo-Russian missile joint venture the BAPL or was reconstituted as a direct production centre under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He said the resolution to delink the BATL was passed without consultation with the State government, stakeholders, or the employee unions, causing anxiety among the staff. The BATL, he pointed out, manufactured precision components, engines, other critical systems for the BrahMos missile programmes. Its workforce had played a significant role in boosting India's strategic defence capabilities, he said, highlighting the need to address the matter without delay. Though members are allowed to raise matters of urgent public importance under Rule 377 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Lok Sabha, Mr. Tharoor in a post on X said his submission on the challenges faced by the BrahMos plant in Thiruvananthapuram was tabled on account of the debate on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha, which was ironic in view of the successful deployment of BrahMos during Sindoor.

The benefits of such expenditure also percolate to states," he per data shared with the House, the Centre has budgeted to collect over Rs 4.18 lakh crore from cess in FY26, higher than about Rs 3.87 lakh crore as per RE of collection is budgeted to rise to over Rs 1.72 lakh crore in FY26, from Rs 1.53 lakh crore collection as per RE in from surcharges and cess do not form part of the divisible pool and are hence not shared with states. Gross tax revenue collected by the Centre forms part of the divisible pool and distributed between the Centre and 8 different cesses are in operation. These are agriculture infrastructure & development cess; cess on crude oil; cess on exports; GST compensation cess; health cess; health and education cess; national calamity contingent duty; and road & infrastructure are levied on corporate tax, income tax , and social welfare surcharge under Customs.

Ajit Pawar Writes To Nitin Gadkari, Wants 3 Key National Highways Widened To Ease Pune Traffic
Mumbai: In a move aimed at tackling the growing traffic congestion in and around Pune, Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has written to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, urging the immediate widening of three crucial national highways passing through the Pune region. In the letter, Mr Pawar has requested the expansion of National Highway 60 (Nashik Phata to Khed), National Highway 65 (Hadapsar to Yavat), and National Highway 548D (Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur). These routes are vital connectors between Pune city and its surrounding industrial and residential zones and are currently under immense traffic pressure. Mr Pawar emphasised that NH 60, which is currently a four-lane highway, should be expanded to six lanes. Similarly, NH 65, another four-lane stretch, also requires widening to six lanes. NH 548D, which runs through one of Pune's key industrial corridors, is currently just two lanes wide and needs to be upgraded to four lanes. He noted that these highways pass through areas with high-density development, including educational institutions, industrial zones, residential colonies, hospitals, petroleum units, and automobile hubs. He further stated that the volume of vehicular traffic has significantly exceeded the existing road capacity, leading to frequent traffic snarls and growing safety concerns for commuters. "The current lane configurations on these sections have exceeded their capacity due to the increased traffic volumes, especially during peak hours. This has resulted in severe congestion, impacting movement and safety for commuters and goods alike," the letter reads. The Deputy Chief Minister highlighted that the growing congestion on these highways not only hampers daily travel but also affects the movement of goods and services, impacting Pune's economic and industrial activities. He stressed that immediate expansion of these roads would also help accommodate the construction of future elevated corridors by providing alternative routes and reducing pressure on internal roads. The Talegaon-Chakan-Shikrapur highway, part of NH 548D, could serve as a temporary alternative during the final stages of the elevated highway project's tender process, Mr Pawar said. Ajit Pawar has urged the Union Minister to promptly approve the proposal and sanction the necessary funds and administrative clearances. He also expressed hope that with timely intervention, long-standing traffic issues in Pune's urban and industrial belts could be effectively mitigated.
