"We have made mistakes, but playoffs still possible": Mayank Yadav hopeful as LSG eye final push

Hindustan Times08-05-2025

Lucknow [India], : Despite sitting in a tough position on the Indian Premier League 2025 points table, Lucknow Super Giants fast bowler Mayank Yadav remains optimistic about the team's chances of making it to the playoffs.
LSG currently find themselves in seventh place with 10 points from 11 matches, having secured five wins and suffered six losses so far. With only three games remaining in the league stage, every match is now a virtual knockout for the Rishabh Pant-led side.
Mayank Yadav, one of the emerging fast-bowling talents, admitted that the team has faltered in certain areas particularly in assessing pitch conditions.
"We have been a little late in assessing the grounds and the wickets. We have made mistakes there, I'll accept that," said Yadav in the pre-match press conference against Royal Challengers Bengaluru , as per quoted from ESPNcricinfo.
However, the seamer is not ready to throw in the towel just yet.
"But we have three matches and if we win that, there might be a chance we can make the playoffs," he added, exuding belief in LSG's ability to bounce back in the closing stages.
LSG are set to face Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Gujarat Titans , and Sunrisers Hyderabad in their remaining fixtures a challenging but not impossible run.
With the IPL 2025 league table tightly packed and playoff spots still up for grabs, LSG will be aiming to produce their best cricket when it matters most.
In their last match against Punjab Kings , Abdul Samad and Badoni put up a fight as they put up an 81-run stand, as Lucknow Super Giants suffered a 37-run loss to Punjab Kings by 37 runs due to a top-order failure.
With this win, PBKS is in the second spot with seven wins, three losses, and one no result, giving them 15 points. LSG is in seventh spot, with five wins and six losses, giving them 10 points.LSG won the toss and opted to bat first.
A quick cameo of 30 in 14 balls by Josh Inglis and 78-run third wicket stand between Prabhsimran and skipper Shreyas Iyer and a 54-run fifth wicket stand between Prabhsimran and Shashank Singh took PBKS to 236/5 in their 20 overs.
Akash Singh and Digvesh Rathi were the top wicket-takers for LSG.
During the run-chase, LSG sank to 73/5, but an 81-run stand between Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad helped LSG fight back, but they were restricted to 199/7 in 20 overs.
Arshdeep Singh delivered a brilliant four-over spell, giving 16 runs and taking three wickets. Azmatullah Omarzai took 2/33 in his four overs. Marco Jansen and Yuzvendra Chahal took one wicket each.

Shreyas Iyer to lead, Virat Kohli to open: Check IPL 2025's team of the season, players featuring from CSK, MI, GT, RCB, PBKS and LSG

IPL 2025's memorable season, marked by exciting close games and the emergence of new talent, culminated in a championship victory for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. This collection of pictures highlights a Dream Team composed of the season's top performers from various franchises. Broadly speaking, GT's left-handed batter did very well this season, hitting 759 runs and taking home the Orange Cap. His ability to score a lot from the opening positions helped the team win and made him a well-known talent among young players in the league. Virat Kohli played a vital part in RCB's IPL final win by guiding the team to victory. Throughout the season, his 657 runs, especially his key innings, highlighted that he was still very skilled and eager to compete. A big reason for Gujarat Titans' good record in the league was Jos Buttler's impressive batting performance. He helped the team by scoring 538 runs, playing steadily while also being strong behind the wickets. It was Suryakumar Yadav's great batting that helped Mumbai Indians remain competitive in the playoff race and in the final stages of the season. Under Shreyas Iyer's leadership, the Punjab Kings made it to the IPL final but failed to win. By doing this, Shreyas has become the first player to captain various teams in the IPL final. The performance of the Punjab Kings in the tournament was greatly helped by Shreyas' runs. Lucknow Super Giants relied on Pooran's strong batting performance for their success. His impressive performance with the bat generated respect for him as a top bomber in the IPL. Royal Challengers Bangalore would not have won the championship without Krunal Pandya's all-round great performance. He played an important role by getting 17 wickets and scoring an unbeaten 73 runs in a match against the Delhi Capitals. In this season, Prasidh Krishna put on a great show for Gujarat Titans. For recording 25 dismissals, the Purple Cap recognized him as the leader in wicket taking, thanks to his constant fast and accurate performance. The 24 wickets taken by CSK's Noor Ahmad were a main highlight for the team, thanks to his left-arm wrist spin. RCB's first championship win was made possible partly because Josh Hazlewood was accurate as a bowler during the IPL finals and playoffs, helping his team with 22 wickets. Bumrah bowled very efficiently, taking 18 wickets at only 6.67 runs a piece. Sports fans recognized that his role was much greater than simply putting up statistics. The way Marcus Stoinis performed with both bat and ball played an important role for Punjab Kings (PBKS). Thanks to his skills as an Impact Player, the team found a good balance and managed to go to the final.

Gavaskar On 'Heartbreaking' Bengaluru Stampede: 'If RCB Won The Trophy In...'

Last Updated: Sunil Gavaskar expressed heartbreak over the Bengaluru stampede, saying that such 'outpouring of emotion' was understandable because RCB fans had to wait 18 years for the title. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has commented and tried to make sense of the tragic Bengaluru stampede last week, which took the lives of 11 people and left several others injured during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)'s celebration of their IPL 2025 title. Gavaskar, in his column for Mid-Day, said it was 'heartbreaking' to see people lose their lives just to get a glimpse of their heroes. He said it was 'understandable' for the fans' joy to be boundless after an 18-year-long wait to see their favorite team lift the trophy, adding that it was now 'futile' to blame anyone for it. 'The loss of lives due to a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium is heartbreaking indeed," Gavaskar wrote. 'All that those people wanted was a glimpse of the players who had given them so much joy and happiness over the years, especially in the last two months. The IPL Trophy, which they kept hoping would be theirs every year but never did, was finally coming to them after a wait of 18 years. It was totally understandable for their joy to know no bounds and they wanted to show it to their heroes… For some to have been crushed to death and many still injured and in hospital was truly a tragic turn of events. There is no point blaming anyone. That's futile as the lives can't be brought back and some injuries may never heal properly, especially the mental ones." Gavaskar went on to boldly claim that such a tragedy might never have happened had RCB won the title in the first few years of the tournament, which, he thinks, would have prevented such 'outpouring of emotion'. 'If RCB had won the Trophy in the first few years, there would not have been this outpouring of emotion as happened after the long wait of 18 years. Other teams have won but their celebrations have been a lot less frenetic maybe because their fans didn't have to wait this long. The slogan 'Ee saala cup naamde' seemed to be like a millstone around the necks of the team. This year, when that slogan was barely heard, the team played some superb cricket, most of it away from their fans. They won every single game they played away, which is a new record in the IPL. No wonder the home fans wanted to give them a special ovation. Heartfelt condolences to those who lost their loved ones," he added. Shashank Singh recalls nerve-wracking IPL 2025 final over, reveals regret that still 'haunts' him

Shashank Singh. New Delhi: The Punjab Kings narrowly lost the Indian Premier League final to Royal Challengers Bangalore by six runs. Despite Shashank Singh's impressive 61 runs off 30 balls, which nearly secured victory, the Kings fell short of RCB's 190-run target. Singh remains disappointed about missing a full toss bowled by Josh Hazlewood in the final over. With Punjab needing 29 runs to win in the final over, and Shashank at the crease, Hazlewood bowled a full toss instead of the expected yorker, leaving the batsman unprepared. The first two balls yielded no runs. Despite scoring 22 runs off the next four balls, Shashank's effort proved insufficient. 'I had done my calculation of the last two overs, Bhuvi likes to bowl yorkers so I had planned to get at least 16-17 runs from him. My calculation was that in the last over our target should be 24 runs in 6 balls. I got only 13 from Bhuvi's over though, so the final over runs needed was 30,' Singh said in a chat with the Indian Express. 'Mentally, my mind was ready to get a first ball yorker from Hazelwood. So I had positioned myself but I never anticipated a full toss one, that too on my thigh pad. Now I feel, if I would have connected it, even if I got it on the handle of the bat, I would have got maximum, because the fine-leg was near. I was hoping for a wide from him but it never came. When I saw the scoreboard stating the last ball needed 12 runs, I knew it's all over,' he added. Overcome with emotion, Shashank wept in the dressing room despite receiving praise for his performance. The missed full toss in the final over's first ball continues to trouble him. 'I'm a strong person but I couldn't control myself when I hit that six on the fifth ball and I saw 12 runs needed off the last ball. I realised it's all over. When I came to the dressing room, everyone came and said, why am I crying? I told them, mujhe apne aap aansoon aa raha hai,' he shared. 'People appreciated my batting wherever I have gone but all are reminding me of that one full toss miss. Mujhe bahut bura laga. The ball was on my hip, square leg was up, I just had to get that bat in which I couldn't. From hotel to airport to ground to home, everyone had that one point bhaiyya woh ball mar dete bas,' he says. The batter is determined to reach and win the IPL 2026 final in Bengaluru. 'Next year we are playing the final in Bangalore for sure and we will lift the Trophy too,' he said.
