Abhinandh makes the most of UTT debut
'I had it in my mind that I may get a chance to play and I was ready. I had been waiting for this opportunity since last year and I had to make it count,' Abhinandh, the 16-year-old Chennai boy, said after marking his UTT debut by stunning Dabang Delhi TTC's Olympian Quek Izaak of Singapore.
Abhinandh surprised Izaac, a teenage sensation who has made rapid strides on the world circuit, with his aggressive forehand winners close to the table. Abhinandh's win, despite conceding the last game to his opponent, was instrumental in helping U Mumbai finish third in the points table and enter the knockouts in style.
'I would have loved to make it 3-0, but even 2-1 was a good result. To beat such a good player whom I had lost against earlier, but I learnt quite a few lessons in the match,' he said. 'He is so good and has beaten so many good players on the circuit, so I just thought about challenging myself. I kind of managed his speed but didn't fully match it. I would love to keep working on it.'
Despite being with Chennai Lions in 2024, Abhinandh couldn't get game-time. This time around, with U Mumba investing in him in the player auction, Abhinandh knew he had to grab the opportunity whenever it was presented to him. And he was ready to withstand the semifinal pressure as well.
'I will be ready. I have been telling myself to be ready all the time and the kind of advice I have received especially from Lilian (Bardet, the Frenchman who is the main men's singles player for U Mumba) is priceless,' Abhinandh said.
Will Abhinandh get a knock on his door Saturday afternoon – hours before its semifinal against defending champion Dempo Goa Challengers – yet again?

Jannik Sinner given ‘alien' tag by opponent after he ends dream run in Cincinnati: ‘I gave my all today but…'
Terence Atmane was enjoying a dream run at the Cincinnati Masters tournament, taking down three seeded players including two top ten opponents enroute to the semifinal. It was a terrific streak of matches for the Frenchman, making a name for himself with a powerful lefty swing, particularly on his serve and forehand. However, he ran into the wrong man at the wrong time, as he was downed by Italian world number one Jannik Sinner in straight sets. Sinner completely neutralised Atmane in the second set and dominated to take it 6-2. Following the match, the Frenchman was full of grace for even getting the chance to compete in such an important match at one of the bigger tournaments on the tennis tour. Taking to social media following the match, Atmane posted an Instagram story from his account which included a picture of him and Sinner embracing at the net, and captioning it 'I gave my all today but it wasn't enough against a true [alien],' using the alien emoji to describe the Italian. Sinner has created a reputation of being a player who is almost untouchable for the majority of the ATP tour outside of Carlos Alcaraz, very rarely losing to lower-ranked opponents, and often handling those matches with incredible ease thanks to his combination of elite defense and incredible power. However, no bitterness from Atmane, who recognised that it simply wasn't going to be his day if Sinner was operating at his highest level. Atmane entered this tournament ranked 136 in the world, but at the moment stands to gain nearly 70 ranking places thanks to his phenomenal performance in the USA. In Cincinnati, Atmane took down Sinner's countryman Flavio Cobolli early on, before also knocking out Brazilian starlet Joao Fonseca. He went on to add the scalps of Taylor Fritz, seeded fourth and the home favourite, and seventh seed Holger Rune of Norway in the quarterfinal to set up this clash. Atmane, an enthusiastic collector of Pokemon cards, also won hearts by gifting a Pikachu card to Sinner ahead of their match, in honour of the Italian's 24th birthday. Sinner now prepares for a rematch against Carlos Alcaraz, the fourth time the pair are meeting in a tournament final in 2025.

Watch: Atmane gifts birthday boy Sinner Pokemon card ahead of Cincinnati Open semifinal
Frenchman Terence Atmane made sure Jannik Sinner had a 24th birthday to remember, gifting the world number one a Pokemon card before going on to lose their semifinal meeting at the Cincinnati Open on Saturday. Top seed and defending champion Sinner ended qualifier Atmane's run at the Masters 1000 tournament with a 7-6(4), 6-2 win. Before the match, the pair were seen talking to each other in the tunnel leading onto centre court, where Atmane handed over the collectable based on the hit Japanese video game series and TV show. 'It's his birthday today so I had to give him a little something,' Atmane told reporters. "I have a little something for you" Wholesome moment between Jannik Sinner and Terence Atmane 🥹 — Cincinnati Open (@CincyTennis) August 16, 2025 'I was thinking last night about what I should give to him. I was like, 'I think I still have some Pokemon cards that I brought from France. Why not give him just a Pokemon card?' I'm a Pokemon card collector. I think this is the perfect gift. 'If that was my birthday, I would be so happy that someone gave me a Pokemon card.' Sinner, who was also serenaded with 'Happy Birthday' by the crowd, was grateful and slightly bemused by the gift. 'I was talking to him a little bit in the locker room. He has one of the biggest collections of Pokemon cards, and I'm very lucky that I got one of his ones,' the Italian told Tennis Channel. 'It was just a nice moment before a match, we didn't know each other at all. So, it was a nice moment ... The card was a kind of Pikachu. It said 30 damage to itself, so I don't know if that is good or not!' For Atmane, the defeat ended a remarkable run in Cincinnati during which he recorded wins over top-10 players Taylor Fritz and Holger Rune. 'Absolutely crazy, insane. I still cannot believe that I made the semi-finals here,' said world number 136 Atmane, who only a couple of months ago suffered back-to-back first-round exits in the second-tier Challenger Tour. 'Playing against Jannik today was also a very good memory for myself and I will remember that for a long time.' He said he had worked a lot on his mental strength and controlling his emotions. 'I think that's the key for me to succeed at a high level.'

Jannik Sinner gifted ‘exceptional' birthday present by Cincinnati opponent; commentator left jaw-dropped
Frenchman Terence Atmane put together the best performance of his career in a run to the semifinals of the Cincinnati Masters 1000 event, gaining significant ranking points and climbing closer to the world's top 50 after a display which saw him put away three seeded players, including world number 4 and home favourite Taylor Fritz. Terence Atmane gifts Jannik Sinner a Pikachu Pokemon card for his birthday before their semifinal match in Cincinnati. It came to an end at the hands of the dominant Jannik Sinner, would number one and the best hard-court player on the ATP tour. Sinner put away Atmane 7-6 6-2 to set up yet another final against Carlos Alcaraz — but what fans will most remember this match for was a really nice gesture by Sinner's opponent in the player tunnel before they walked onto the court. Sinner celebrated his 24th birthday the day of the semifinal, on August 16. When the two players met each other in the tunnel, Atmane took a moment to share a gift with Sinner — a Pokemon trading card, which he handed over to Sinner, earning gratitude and an embrace from the Italian man in turn. A sweet video captured the moment the pair had this interaction — keep in mind this is their first ever match against each other on tour. A later video sees Sinner reveal what card he received from Atmane, and it proved to be an iconic Pikachu card for the world number one. 'I was talking to him a little bit in the locker room. He has one of the biggest collections of Pokemon cards, and I'm very lucky that I got one of his ones,' Sinner said to Tennis Channel in a post-match interview. 'It was just a nice moment before a match, we didn't know each other at all. So, it was a nice moment.' 23-year-old Atmane boasts of an impressive Pokemon card collection, almost certainly the largest of any player on the ATP tour. His thoughtful gesture adds to a week in which he has earned many new fans through his explosive style of tennis and easygoing manner: despite this being the biggest match of his career, he spared the time to share a moment of joy with his opponent. On the court itself, Sinner didn't take too long to figure his French opponent out despite a tough first set that headed to a tiebreaker. He breezed through the second set in typical dominant fashion, before Carlos Alcaraz put away an ailing Alexander Zverev in straight sets. The best rivalry in men's tennis will meet each other on Monday for their fourth final of the year.
