Nationals C Keibert Ruiz lands on IL with head contusion
June 25 - One day after he was hit in the head by a foul ball while sitting in the dugout, catcher Keibert Ruiz was placed on the injured list by the Washington Nationals on Tuesday with what the team is calling a head contusion.
Washington called up Drew Millas from Triple-A Rochester to replace Ruiz on the roster.
Teammate Josh Bell's foul ball hit Ruiz on a bounce and the catcher placed both hands on his head and immediately left the bench. Riley Adams replaced him behind the plate. After Washington's 10-6 win over the host San Diego Padres, manager Dave Martinez said the 26-year-old Ruiz was headed for a CT scan.
"The ball hit him pretty solid," Martinez said. "He had a nice lump on the side of his head."
Ruiz has played in 66 of the Nationals' first 79 games this season. He has hit .248 with two homers and 24 RBIs, though he has struggled in June with a .167 average.
Millas, 27, likely will serve as the backup behind Adams. This is Millas' first stint with the team this season after hitting .259 with two homers and seven RBIs in 31 games for Washington in 2023 and '24.
In 22 games this season, the 28-year-old Adams entered Tuesday hitting .097 with three homers and eight RBIs as Ruiz's backup.

Heatwave at Club World Cup serves as warning for real thing next summer
A punishing heatwave is significantly impacting the current FIFA Club World Cup, causing players to struggle and teams to implement extreme measures like using air-conditioned locker rooms for substitutes. Athletes describe the heat as 'impossible,' leading to cut-short practices, while fans endure challenging conditions, prompting health warnings due to risks like dehydration and heat stroke. FIFA mandates cooling breaks when the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature reaches 89.6 degrees, a practice that became more common after the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and was first introduced at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The current heat serves as a stark preview for the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, where many host cities experience high summer temperatures and potential hurricane seasons. This heatwave highlights a growing climate challenge for future FIFA tournaments, including the 2030 World Cup and 2027 Women's World Cup, drawing criticism from groups like Fossil Free Football for FIFA's scheduling and sponsorship choices.

Oscar Bobb determined to secure Man City future at Club World Cup
Oscar Bobb is determined to grasp his chance at the Club World Cup and prove he has a future at Manchester City. The promising Norwegian winger looked set to play a significant role in City's 2024-25 campaign after building on a positive end to the previous season by impressing on their summer tour. Advertisement But his hopes of making a big first-team breakthrough were dashed when he fractured his leg in training last August. After an aborted comeback in February, he did not play again until April. Now back to full fitness, the 21-year-old has made two substitute appearances in the United States and is determined to establish himself in manager Pep Guardiola's new-look side. Bobb looked close to establishing himself in the City first team when he scored a late winner at Newcastle in January 2024 (Owen Humphreys/PA) Guardiola, having already overseen the arrival of four new players this summer, has said some players are likely to leave before the new Premier League season, but Bobb does not plan to be one of them. Bobb said: 'I expect to be here. I think that's the way I have to look at it and try and impress every chance I get. Advertisement 'I want to play as much as possible, be decisive and play in the big games. 'It's a fresh start for me as well as the team and I think from here on out we can just build. 'I think I'm ready now but we've got 27 players. If I get a chance to play – it doesn't matter for how long – I'll take it.' City are already assured of a place in the last 16 having won their opening two games in Group G by an aggregate score of 8-0. Although there is a possibility of thunderstorms, the match is set to take place in the hottest part of the day with the kick-off at 3pm local time, when the temperature is forecast to reach 32C. Bobb insists the team will be ready with preparations having gone well and spirits high at their training base in Boca Raton on Florida's south-east coast. He said: 'It's warmer than we're used to but it's the same for everyone. We're training in this heat and we just have to get used to it, because it will be like that. Advertisement 'We've got a great hotel. There's lots to do. There's basketball, table tennis and obviously there's a lot of matches, so we stay watching them. 'I think it's been great to see teams from all over the world doing so well and a lot of competition, so it's been good.'
