Traders, citizens join Akkalkot bandh to protest attack on Sambhaji Brigade leader Pravin Gaikwad

Time of India18-07-2025
Kolhapur: A bandh called by Maratha outfits in Akkalkot to protest the attack on Sambhaji Brigade leader Pravin Gaikwad received widespread support from citizens, traders and 50 social and political organisations on Friday.
The Akkalkot Traders' Association, schools and colleges participated in the protest rally, which began at Shri Khandoba Temple and drew leaders and organizations from across Solapur district.
Rally participants said the attack on Gaikwad was not just on an individual but on the entire progressive movement. They emphasised that the bandh was organised to ensure that the state took note of the incident, while criticising the administration for its handling of the situation.
The protesters accused the police administration of giving leeway to the accused. They claimed that the attack was intended to eliminate Gaikwad and, therefore, the stringent MCOCA should be invoked.

Shashi Tharoor shares his sambhar origin theory, internet says ‘loved his analogy'

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has once again left the internet both amused and intrigued-- this time with a history lesson on one of South India's most beloved dishes, sambhar. Speaking at the South Side Story festival, Tharoor was asked if he enjoyed Delhi's version of the dish. His answer quickly turned into a tale blending culinary history with a dash of humour. 'Look, you guys have to understand that sambhar was invented in the South because of the North,' Tharoor began. 'When the Marathas conquered Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu, they parked Sambhaji as a Maharaja there and he was missing his daal. We didn't have any of his daal stuff in South India, so the cooks tried to approximate something for him that they thought might please his palate — and they named it for him. Sambhar was named for Sambhaji, the Maratha Peshwa of Tanjavur. And that's how it came about.' With his trademark wit, Tharoor added, 'So whatever you guys do to sambhar can't be worse than what we did to daal.' Clips of the moment are now circulating online, with social media users reacting with everything from hearty laughs to debates over the authenticity of his theory. Some called it 'classic Tharoor storytelling,' while others called him out for calling Maratha from North India. A user wrote, 'Just like any South Indian even Maharashtra is North India.' Another user wrote, 'Marathas were from West not north , but loved his analogy.' The third user wrote on Instagram, 'Always witty. Love the way he says, every time!' 'Sir needs to know that Maharashtra is in west and not North,' the fourth wrote.

MCOCA invoked in kidnapping of alleged drug trafficker linked to D Company

MUMBAI: The Mumbai Crime Branch has invoked stringent provisions of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the kidnapping case of alleged drug trafficker Sajid Electricwala, citing his captors' links to the D Company network, founded and controlled by Dawood Ibrahim. MCOCA invoked in kidnapping of alleged drug trafficker linked to D Company According to investigators, MCOCA has been applied against ten accused, who are suspected to have worked for Anwar Shaikh — the brother of underworld fugitive Chhota Shakeel. Police allege the accused ran a synthetic drug racket manufacturing Mephedrone, popularly known as MD, under Shaikh's direction. The case stems from a June 16 operation, when Electricwala was rescued from Banda district in Uttar Pradesh after being allegedly held captive for nearly a month. Police say he was abducted for failing to return ₹50 lakh taken from the gang and for not delivering a promised consignment of Mephedrone. The accused — Sarwar Maqsood Khan, Yunush Tewarpal, Mehtab Ali, Santosh Waghmare, Rahul Sawant, Satish Kadu, and Taufeeque Sandy — were arrested in June. Three others, Mohammad Hussain Farid Khan, Jeetendra Thakur, and Vijay Kale, were apprehended in July. Investigators claim Khan was the key link to Anwar Shaikh, who allegedly funded the drug manufacturing operation. Officials also revealed the gang used the encrypted messaging application Zangi to communicate. The app offers 'military-grade' encryption, does not require a phone number for registration, and leaves no saved message trail — a feature that, police say, made it nearly impossible to intercept their conversations. 'We have applied MCOCA in this case and will seek further custody of the accused under the provisions of the Act,' said a senior crime branch officer.

NCP rehabilitates Suraj Chavan, names Nawab Malik as Mumbai poll strategist

MUMBAI: The Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has reinstated Maharashtra youth leader Suraj Chavan into the party's organisational fold, barely three weeks after removing him over a violent altercation that went viral on social media. Chavan has now been appointed general secretary of the state unit. NCP rehabilitates Suraj Chavan, names Nawab Malik as Mumbai poll strategist Chavan was sacked as state youth president on July 21 after a video surfaced showing him and other NCP workers punching and elbowing Vijay Ghadge, the state president of Maratha outfit 'Chhava Sangathana'. The footage triggered a political row, forcing his removal from the post. On Wednesday, NCP president Ajit Pawar brought Chavan back with a promotion. Within hours, the move drew sharp criticism from social activist Anjali Damania. 'From youth state president to directly promoted to party general secretary? Is this the good government of Maharashtra?' she posted on X. 'A person involved in brawls is made the party's general secretary by the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra. Wonderful.' Chavan remained unavailable for comment. In another significant organisational move, the party appointed senior leader and former minister Nawab Malik as chairperson of its election management committee for Mumbai, ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls likely early next year. In the absence of a city unit president, Malik is expected to wield complete control over preparations for the crucial civic election. The nine-member committee includes working presidents Shivajirao Nalawade and Siddharth Kamble, MLA Sana Malik, former MLA Zeeshan Siddique, and office-bearers Santosh Dhuwali (state general secretary), Bhaskar Vichare (state vice-president), Sanjay Tatkare (state spokesperson) and Raju Ghuge. 'In the backdrop of BMC polls, it was decided to form an election management committee for Mumbai under the chairmanship of the senior party leader Nawabhai Malik. With the guidance of this committee and the active participation of all workers, I am fully confident that the NCP will perform effectively in the BMC elections,' Pawar said in a post on X. 'With the decision, Malik has become the de facto head of the Mumbai unit,' said a senior NCP leader. The Mumbai president's post has been vacant since Sameer Bhujbal resigned to contest the state assembly elections from Nandgaon in Nashik as an independent candidate. Malik's appointment is also seen as part of the leadership's effort to bring him back into mainstream politics. Last year, he was fielded from the Mankhurd–Shivaji Nagar constituency despite objections from the BJP.
