Rare medieval bible returned to Salisbury Cathedral after 700 years with help of Independent readers
The Master of Sarum bible was saved after a campaign by Friends of the Nations' Libraries (FNL), and a global fundraising appeal by The Independent.
Hundreds of readers donated to the charity FNL whose Patron is the King and which has the simple aim of saving our literary heritage.
Lisa Nandy, the Culture Secretary, said: "I am so pleased that, following an appeal in The Independent, FNL has today seen one of the greatest literary treasures returned to Salisbury Cathedral. This achievement highlights the power of both public and private philanthropy, which is essential to ensuring that our arts and cultural institutions continue to thrive and remain accessible for future generations.
"The bible was illuminated on vellum by the Sarum Master, one of the greatest artists of his time, and today it was formally celebrated at the cathedral with a thanksgiving service attended by donors after more than £100,000 was raised in the appeal to buy it and pay for conservation and a publication to help scholars and students learn about this masterpiece and Salisbury's role as a key cultural centre in England.'
The cathedral today still owns more than 30 books which were illuminated and written on vellum for it when it was first built and which are displayed alongside its copy of the Magna Carta.
Many of the donors came for a special service of thanksgiving on Tuesday at the cathedral for the celebration of the bible's return.
Donations were made by the TS Eliot Foundation, Sir Rocco Forte, the David Cooke Foundation and hundreds of members of the public coordinated by the FNL.
Entrepreneur Cyrus Vandrevala, a donor to the King's charities including FNL said: 'This is a dramatic moment to celebrate the charity sector stepping in to save a masterpiece in danger of being lost. The King will be so pleased that through his charity volunteers and the public have combined to back his charity after a brilliant appeal to safe keep a literary treasure and all at no cost to the public. It is a wonderful partnership of the public and philanthropy, especially beneficial for scholars and students and visitors to Salisbury.'
The Very Revd Nicholas Papadopulos, Dean of Salisbury, said: 'We are thrilled to be sharing this important and beautiful Bible with our many visitors to the Cathedral. To have it on display will mean that everyone can appreciate close-up the wonderfully detailed text and decorated letters of this exceptional manuscript.
'We are hugely grateful to the Friends of the Nations' Libraries for their work in raising the funds to return the Sarum Bible to Salisbury.'

Meanwhile Kris married Olympic decathlete Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce), 75, in 1991, shortly after her divorce from Robert was finalized. They had two daughters together, Kendall, 29, and Kylie Jenner, 28. Kim is currently studying to become a lawyer, like her father. In May, she completed her law school program after a six year journey. She still needs to pass the Bar Exam to practice law in the state. In 2020, Kim said she hoped that her father would be 'so proud' to see her pursuing a career in law and says whenever she gets 'frustrated' with studying, she thinks of him. 'He must've been going through some of the same things that I have gone through. It would have been exciting to talk to him about that, and I know that he would be so, so proud,' she said. In March, Kim's attempt to purchase a family heirloom connected to her late father was rejected by O.J. Simpson's estate. The estate's executor, Malcom LaVergne, revealed that they, sadly, had to turn down her $15,000 offer on the Bible her dad gifted Simpson, who died on April 10, 2024, because it was 'too late to purchase it outside the auction.' She still needs to pass the Bar Exam to practice law LaVergne revealed to TMZ that Kim's team contacted him the month prior, after learning some of Simpson's personal effects were going up for auction. This included a Bible, featuring a handwritten note inside, penned by Robert to Simpson. The inscription reads: 'OJ, this book will help. God loves you and he will speak to you with his words. Read this book every day. God has a definite plan for your life. You are His child and He will use you again. I love you and God loves you. - Robert.' LaVergne previously revealed that the bible was given to 'The Juice' while he was in jail after his two-hour chase across Southern California in his white Ford Bronco. Inside the front cover, there contains an inscription to Simpson from Kardashian that is dated June 18, 1994 - exactly a day after the former NFL star's arrest. In an email sent to LaVergne from Kim's team, he was informed that due to the 'sentimental value' the item held to Kim, she was 'willing to offer $15,000' to purchase the Bible. By the time he received the email, LaVergne says the Bible 'was already under contract and court order to be sold to pay off O.J.'s debt.' Just weeks after the late NFL star's estate turned down Kim's offer to buy it, the family heirloom officially sold at auction for $65,800 — or $80,276 with its buyer's premium, according to its listing on Goldin Auctions' website. The item received 49 bids total. Robert, a devout Christian, and Simpson met in the 1960s or 1970s while they were both at the University of Southern California (USC). Later, they reconnected while playing tennis at a mutual friend's house. Robert infamously supported Simpson during his 1995 trial for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

Iconic singer, 81, looking at 'all legal remedies' after son's elder abuse claim
Gladys Knight is considering legal options after her son, Shanga Hankerson, branded her tour schedule 'detrimental' to her health. The 81-year-old legend is set to resume her Queens Tour in the US next month and has insisted she is 'healthy and happy' despite her son's claims. Hankerson, 49, alleged that Knight's husband William McDowell — who is 33 years her junior — was mentally and financially abusing her. He told The Shade Room: 'I don't want my mom out on tour on a tour bus wondering where she's at.' After this, Hankerson claimed he had filed a complaint with North Carolina's Department of Human Services and that an investigation is underway. Knight hit back at this and reassured worried fans that her health and the tour had been 'misrepresented'. 'I want my fans and those concerned to rest assured I am doing very well for someone who has been on stage for three quarters of a century, hard to believe, right?' she told The Independent. 'I'm healthy and happy and visiting friends and family these last few months. I'm excited to get back on the road with my sisters and on stage with The Queens Tour. See you soon.' The 73-year-old, known for his role as Luke Skywalker in the iconic sci-fi franchise, gave his wife Marilou Tork – whom he married in 1978 – the choice between relocating to 'London or Ireland'. Hamill's wife, who worked as a dental hygienist and met Hamill while cleaning his teeth, ingeniously convinced her husband not to move countries by suggesting Trump was pushing them out of the US. 'She's very clever. She didn't respond right away but a week later she said, 'I'm surprised you would allow him to force you out of your own country,'' Hamill, a lifelong Democrat, told The Times. ''That son of a b****', I thought. I'm not leaving.' When asked about the political landscape in the United States, Hamill expressed exasperation over 'the bullying, the incompetence, the people in place' in the Trump administration. Elsewhere in the interview, Hamill revealed his dislike of US gun culture is such that he almost didn't accept his role in a forthcoming adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel The Long Walk. Hamill will play The Major, a man who runs an annual walking contest in a dystopian version of America that sees 100 young men walk continuously at a pace of four miles an hour – or they'll be shot to death. 'They were just brutalising people, kneeling on their necks,' he said. 'When I made the movie I wasn't thinking in terms of it being timely but it's proven to be just that.' Hamill led the three original Star Wars movies – Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983) – as Luke Skywalker alongside Carrie Fisher as Princess Leira and Harrison Ford as Han Solo. He reprised the role in all three films of the sequel trilogy: The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019), as well as in numerous TV spin offs, including The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian.
