Nothing I can do to bulletproof myself: Hayden Young

Yahoo3 days ago
Star Fremantle midfielder Hayden Young concedes he will be at a higher risk of injury when he returns from his adductor niggle in time for the club's finals campaign.
Young, playing just his third match back from hamstring surgery, tweaked his groin while laying a tackle in Fremantle's 27-point win over Carlton on Sunday.
No concrete timeline has been set for Young's return but it's believed he will miss at least two weeks, giving him a chance to return for Fremantle's final-round clash with the Bulldogs.

If the Dockers take a conservative approach, Young will return for the first week of the finals, giving him a month to recover.
Young's two hamstring tears this year means he has tallied just seven AFL games for the campaign - on the back of a compromised pre-season preparation.
The 24-year-old is well aware his lack of foundation will leave him somewhat vulnerable when he makes his playing return in the coming weeks.
"The reality is, when you don't have a full pre-season and you don't have continuity in your body, you're at a higher risk of injury," Young told 96FM.
"That's something I've got to manage going forward.
"When I go back out on the field, I don't have the amount of work in my body the rest of the boys have.
"I've got to prepare really well to prevent these things from happening.
"There's no little fix or something I can do in the next two weeks to bulletproof my body.
"I have to prepare the best I can, have faith in the medical staff, and hope my body holds up."
Young is so important to Fremantle's midfield set-up that Essendon great Matthew Lloyd went as far as declaring the Dockers won't be able to win the flag without the skilful on-baller.
Fremantle (14-6) have won 10 of their past 11 games to be right in the hunt for a prized top-four berth, and they'll start as hot favourites in Saturday night's clash with struggling Port Adelaide (8-12) at Adelaide Oval.
The Dockers then round out their home-and-away campaign with games against Brisbane (home) and the Bulldogs (away).

Hammer blow for Cronulla Sharks as star suspended for rest of NRL regular season

Things have gone from bad to worse for the Cronulla Sharks after their shock loss to the Dragons on Saturday, with Briton Nikora copping a three-game ban that means his regular season is over. The Kiwi second-rower was sin-binned in the dying stages of the Sharks' 22-14 loss on Saturday after racing out of the line and hitting Dragons winger Corey Allan high. On Sunday, the NRL match review committee hit Nikora with a grade-two careless high tackle charge. Because it's his third offence it carries a four-week suspension (three with an early guilty plea). The Sharks have a bye in Round 25, meaning they only have three games remaining in the regular season. Even if Nikora pleads guilty and accepts the three-game ban, he won't play again this year until the NRL finals. But considering the Sharks are seventh and haven't been setting the world on fire, there's no guarantee they'll even make it. Craig Fitzgibbon's side are on 28 points after their loss to the Dragons, just two points ahead of the Dolphins in eighth and Roosters in ninth. The Sea Eagles are lurking on 24 points in 10th, and even the Dragons are a mathematical chance to make the finals on 22 points. Cronulla had won four in a row before their loss to the Dragons, but their form hasn't been spectacular. They only narrowly beat the last-placed Rabbitohs 14-12 in Round 21, despite Souths having a plethora of players out injured. The Sharks could opt to challenge Nikora's charge at the NRL judiciary, but he'd cop a four-game ban if unsuccessful. That would mean he misses the first week of the finals - but only if the Sharks make it. Briton Nikora's regular season is now over. — The SuperCoach Whisperer (@SCWhisperer) August 10, 2025 Sharks rue missed chance to shake-up NRL top-four On Saturday night, Fitzgibbon lamented a spurned opportunity for his team's top-four ambitions after they failed to fire against the 11th-placed Dragons. Cronulla only play one top-eight team in the final five rounds of the regular season, and were expected to charge into the top-four. But they'll now need to rely on Penrith losing twice and the New Zealand Warriors to also drop points if they are to book a qualifying final spot. Fitzgibbon admitted Cronulla missed a chance to shake up the top four, as the Dragons scored their first win over the Sharks in five years. "We had an opportunity today and we didn't take it," Fitzgibbon said. "I thought the game had no rhythm to it at all ... it was a poor discipline performance from us. We opened the door and showed we were susceptible, and they took it." Spencer Leniu, Kurt Donoghoe and Francis Molo all copped two charges each, with Molo facing a two-game ban for a grade-two carless high tackle on Naufahu Whyte. Leniu copped two fines for his role in an ugly melee that erupted in the first half, while Whyte and Aublix Tawha were also fined for the same incident. And Donoghoe copped two separate fines for a high tackle on Billy Smith and shoulder charge on Leniu.

Jauan Jennings' injury update from 49ers' John Lynch will not inspire confidence

The post Jauan Jennings' injury update from 49ers' John Lynch will not inspire confidence appeared first on ClutchPoints. The San Francisco 49ers are going to enter the 2025 season as one of the more banged-up teams in the NFL. The Niners are dealing with concerning injuries on both sides of the ball. Only time will tell if the 49ers will overcome these injuries, but for now, some are not good. The wide receiver position has been a staple for the 49ers ever since the beginning of the franchise. Regardless of the era, the Niners have produced some of the best receivers the game has ever seen. Between Jerry Rice, Dwight Clark, Gene Washington, Terrell Owens, John Taylor, Anquan Boldin, Michael Crabtree, Brandon Lloyd, and Deebo Samuel, you could put that group up against any team in the history of the sport. The point is … the Niners need their receivers to be a major factor in the offense. This season, that may not be the case. Brandon Ayiuk is recovering from a Torn ACL and MCL he suffered last season. He is currently on the PUP list. Jacob Cowing, who contributed in 2024 with four catches for 80 yards, injured his hamstring and is currently not practicing. Ricky Pearsall just recently got back on the field after dealing with a hamstring injury himself. Lastly, Jauan Jennings. The receiver is working his way back from a calf injury but is not close to being active. General manager John Lynch provided an update on Jennings. 'Jauan's working with our health and performance staff, trying to get back out on the field,' Lynch said. 'Jauan got his calf in the offseason, strained it, and calves can kind of linger, unfortunately. And came out, practiced some, and wasn't feeling great, and so we've kind of put him off to the side. 'But Jauan's working hard, like he always does. Don't have any timetable, but we'll see. Looking forward to getting J.J., as we call him, out there on the field. He's such a big part of who we are and what we want to be. Eager to get him back, but won't do it until he's ready.' The receiving room is banged up right now, but optimistically, when the season starts in a month, the room will be healthier and ready to produce for Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey, and the offense. 49ers veteran wide receiver lands on season-ending IR

The post 49ers veteran wide receiver lands on season-ending IR appeared first on ClutchPoints. The San Francisco 49ers have placed veteran wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown on injured reserve (IR), effectively ending his 2025 season, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. St. Brown suffered a foot injury during a joint practice with the Denver Broncos on Thursday, prompting the move ahead of Week 1 of the preseason. St. Brown, 28, stands at 6'5″ and weighs 214 pounds. The 49ers signed him on July 22, 2025, released him briefly on July 31, and re-signed him on Tuesday. The 2025 season was set to be his seventh NFL season, having previously played for the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and New Orleans Saints. Over his six-year career, St. Brown has recorded 63 receptions for 928 yards and 2 touchdowns across 62 games, averaging 14.7 yards per catch on 110 targets. Drafted in the sixth round (207th overall) by the Packers in 2018 after a college career at Notre Dame, St. Brown has battled multiple injuries in the past, including a high ankle sprain in 2019 and a hamstring injury in 2023. His consistent availability has been limited, but his size and experience have made him a valued depth receiver. In 2022 with the Bears, he appeared in 16 games, starting all, and totaled 21 receptions for 323 yards and one touchdown. With St. Brown sidelined, the 49ers will rely on an assortment of wideouts entering the preseason, including Ricky Pearsall, Demarcus Robinson, Jordan Watkins, Russell Gage, Junior Bergen, Terique Owens, Isaiah Hodgins, and Robbie Chosen. Pearsall and Watkins, in particular, are expected to compete for increased roles this season. In a corresponding roster move, San Francisco re-signed quarterback Tanner Mordecai to a one-year deal. Mordecai, 24, originally joined the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in May 2024, spending the entire 2024 season on the practice squad before being waived earlier this month. A transfer from the University of Oklahoma and SMU, Mordecai completed 850 of 1,281 passes for 9,856 yards and 85 touchdowns during his college career, also rushing for 657 yards and 8 touchdowns. His addition provides the 49ers with another quarterback option behind Mac Jones and Bradley Carter as they approach the preseason opener.
