Trai issues consultation paper on microwave spectrum across bands
Aiming to create guidelines for microwave spectrum in the 6 GHz, 7 GHz, 13 GHz, 15 GHz, 18 GHz and 21 GHz bands, along with V-band and E-band, the paper seeks industry views on how to assign spectrum in various microwave bands for commercial backhaul, along with the terms and conditions, including pricing, spectrum caps, and carrier aggregation.
Called the 'lifeblood of today's cellular mobile networks', microwave spectrum is used for providing both last mile 'access' to consumer devices, as well as backhaul links in places where laying the optical fiber cables is difficult or economically unviable.
The microwave spectrum ranging from 400 MHz to 4 GHz was used for providing cellular mobile radio access, while the one ranging from 6 GHz to 24 GHz was used for providing backhaul. However, the recent introduction of 5G technology has led to the need for wider frequency channels and now frequencies above 24 GHz are also used for both cellular mobile radio access and backhaul.
DoT also wants TRAI to examine whether the 7 GHz and 15 GHz bands, currently used for backhaul, should be re-evaluated for mobile telephony now or after the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) takes a call on them in 2027.Also, it has asked which commercial telecom services should the spectrum in traditional microwave backhaul bands be assigned for radio backhaul purposes.
Trai has also been asked to examine how spectrum in non-mobile telephony bands could be used for last-mile connectivity through fixed wireless access, and for captive backhaul services. The feasibility of permitting low-power indoor device-to-device communication in the V-band on a licence-exempt basis is also under review. Stakeholders will have to submit their inputs by June 25, with counter-comments accepted until July 9.

BSNL launches 4G mobile services in Delhi
State-owned telecom service provider BSNL on Friday announced the soft launch of 4G network in the national capital. The 4G services will be available to users through a partner's network access arrangement, BSNL said in a statement. "The Delhi soft launch is delivered as a 4G-as-a-service through a partner's network access arrangement that provides last-mile radio coverage on compatible 4G devices, with BSNL SIMs. This approach complements BSNL's nationwide 4G build under its indigenous rollout programme," the company said. The company rolled out 4G services with an investment of Rs 25,000 crore last year. It has installed 1 lakh mobile towers for 4G services. IT firm TCS and a C-DoT-led consortium had bagged the majority of the Rs 25,000-crore project for the supply of telecom gear to BSNL. The company will invest another Rs 47,000 crore in boosting its telecom network.

(BSNL), a State-controlled telecom operator, has announced the nationwide roll-out of its network-side Anti-Spam and Anti-Smishing protection for its over 9 crore mobile customers across India. This move aimed at protecting mobile subscribers from fraudulent SMS messages carrying suspicious links. The system requires no user intervention with no application download or requirement of changing settings and works directly at the network level. BSNL now blocks suspicious and phishing links in SMS in real time, stopping them before they reach users. Genuine messages like OTPs, banking alerts, and government notifications are still delivered as per TRAI's rules. BSNL's New Tech Wipes Out 1.5 Million Daily Scam Threats BSNL says the system can detect over 1.5 million scam attempts every day. Each month, it flags more than 35,000 unique fake web links and 60,000 scam-related WhatsApp and mobile numbers. This comes as the government pushes to grow BSNL's user base. As of July, BSNL holds a 7.78% share of India's wireless mobile market.
