Inter-state meet last chance saloon for worlds qualification
Only a handful of athletes including Neeraj Chopra (men's javelin) have qualified for the biennial meet but Avinash Sable (men's steeplechase) is already out of the season with an ACL issue. Some of the others to have met the mark via meeting the entry standards are Parul Chaudhary (women's steeplechase) and Praveen Chitravel (men's triple jump). It's possible that number can swell as athletes can also make it via ranking. In the previous edition in Hungary, India had sent a 27-member contingent. That number threatens to be lower, as this time, the relay team will not be sent due to injuries to main runners.
"Amoj (Jacob) is back from his injury, Vishal TK is good, Rajesh (Ramesh) is also back but does not have the style he had in Budapest," Athletics Federation of India (AFI) chief coach Radhakrishnan Nair told reporters on Tuesday. "This has restricted the contingent to 15-17, but we still believe we may have 20 athletes," he added.

Chopra will defend the title at the World Championships to be held in Tokyo from September 13-21. Diamond League is an elite one-day meeting series in global athletics. Athletes compete for points at the 14 series meetings in a bid to qualify for the two-day Diamond League Final, which will be held in Zurich on August 27 and 28. The DL Final is a winner-takes-all competition and the championing each of the 32 events is crowned Diamond League champion. Each champion is awarded the iconic Diamond Trophy and a wild card for the World Athletics Championships. Men's javelin event will be held on August 28. Winner of each event will get a trophy and $30,000 as prize money. The second place finisher will pocket $12,000 and third place-finisher $7,000. But this year, winners of eight events out of the 32 will get enhanced prize money. The eight events are 100m men, 1500m men, 400m hurdles men, pole vault men, 100m women, 100m hurdles women, 3000m women and long jump women. In these eight events, the winner will pocket $50,000, while the second and third-place finishers will get $20,000 and $10,000 respectively.
