Viral video: People rush to ‘loot' mangoes on display at Lucknow mango festival; netizens question ‘civic sense'

As the festival for the king of fruits, Mango, wrapped up in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow on Monday, July 6, a video from the event showing attendees rushing to loot the mangoes on display went viral on social media.
In the viral video, people can be seen grabbing the mangoes put on display for the Lucknow mango festival, smiling and giggling about the number of mangoes each person was able to grab.
Both men and women were seen with hands full of mangoes, while some were also turning their sarees and dupattas into makeshift bags, enabling them to carry more mangoes.
The person who posted the video on social media shared that the 'same mangoes were being sold outside' the festival camp.
Social media users were shocked to see the kind of loot at the Lucknow mango festival and questioned the basic civic sense of Indians.
'This is our civic sense. No wonder other countries don't want Indians on their land,' a user said.
'They all wish they were born with 16 hands,' a user quipped.
Another user said, 'Thodi der aur hone do table aur cover bhi ghar le ke chale jaenge.'
A user added, 'India needs Civic Sense Day and Common Sense as subjects in schools and colleges.'
'Seeing this seems very uncomfortable…I can't imagine being there,' said a disgusted netizen.
'Isn't this a regular thing? Isn't this who we are? After boasting all about Sanskar, pride and heritage, this is a usual sight. We can be seen looting goods if a truck overturns on the highway,' a user slammed.
Recently, a video from Madhya Pradesh showing attendees at an event fighting for a plate of free puri and sabzi went viral on social media.
According to media reports, the viral video was from the Global Investors Summit held in Bhopal on 24-25 February 2025. The viral video captured attendees scrambling for food plates, with scenes of people snatching plates, breaking queues, and causing general mayhem.

Kerala cleric's claims on Nimisha Priya's death row case inaccurate

New Delhi: Claims being made by a Kerala-based cleric about the case of Nimisha Priya, an Indian on death row in Yemen, are incorrect and any speculation on this sensitive matter should be avoided, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The office of the Grand Mufti of India, Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musaliyar, has claimed that Priya's death sentence had been overturned The office of the Grand Mufti of India, Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musaliyar, has claimed that Priya's death sentence had been overturned. 'We have seen reports making claims regarding the case of Nimisha Priya. These are incorrect,' one of the people cited above said on condition of anonymity. 'We would urge all to avoid misinformation and speculation on this sensitive matter,' the person said. Priya's execution was scheduled for July 16 but was put off following the intervention of Indian officials and non-resident Indians who have been seeking a reprieve for the Indian nurse. The 38-year-old woman is in a prison in Sanaa, the Yemeni capital city that is controlled by Houthi rebels. Priya, who hails from Kollengode in Palakkad district of Kerala, was convicted of murdering her Yemeni business partner by a Yemeni court and given the death sentence in 2020. Yemen's Supreme Judicial Council dismissed her appeal in November 2023. The external affairs ministry said on July 17 that it is in touch with Yemeni authorities and some friendly nations to reach a 'mutually agreeable solution' in Priya's case. The matter has been complicated as India doesn't have a diplomatic presence in Yemen and diplomats in the Indian mission in Saudi Arabia are handling the issue. Indian officials have focused on efforts to prevent the execution through the Islamic tradition of 'diyat', or paying 'blood money' to the victim's family. However, the family of Talal Abdo Mahdi, the Yemeni man killed by Priya, has said it will not agree on a settlement. Priya injected Mahdi with sedatives in an attempt to retrieve her passport, which he had withheld amid escalating personal and financial disputes. An overdose reportedly led to his death.

Pune Man's Brother Fought In Kargil War. He Was Told To Prove Citizenship

New Delhi: Hakimuddin Sheikh, from Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh, fought for his country in Kargil. But at midnight Saturday a mob of 80 men from a Hindutva group - allegedly accompanied by two police personnel in plains clothes - forced its way into his brother Irshad Sheikh's Pune home and accusing him and frightened women and children of being Bangladeshi citizens. They demanded 'proof' of the family's Indian roots, he said. He also said the men who later claimed they were policemen - when they allegedly tried to strongarm him - did nothing. Sheikh said their Aadhaar cards were eventually verified and he was urged not to complain about the harassment. The police are trying to "pressure us..." he told news agency PTI. A complaint was, nevertheless, filed, but no action has been taken so far, Sheikh told PTI. 'Been Indians For 400 Years' "My older brother lives in UP but two other brothers and I, with their children, have been living here (i.e., Pune's Chandan Nagar neighbourhood) for many decades," he told reporters. He said the mob banged on the front door at midnight. "When we opened the door some barged in and started demanding to see our Aadhaar cards. We showed the documents... but they called it 'fake' and asked the women and children to also show their Aadhaar cards." CCTV footage from outside the house does show a large number of men gathered outside, but not all of their faces are visible. One man can seen covering his face with a hooded jacket. Irshad Sheikh said he tried explaining to the mob that his family had been residents of the neighbourhood 60 years and that his older brother and two uncles had served in the Army. Hakimuddin Sheikh retired in 2000 as a Havildar in the Engineers Corp and, according to Irshad Sheikh, an uncle was injured, and awarded a medal of valour, in the 1971 war with Pakistan. Another uncle fought in the 1965 war and our Indian roots go back 400 years, he said "But they were in no mood to listen. They hurled abuses and accused us of being Bangladeshis. I told them if they want to investigate, they are welcome to do so... but barging into someone's house and forcing children to show documents at midnight is not appropriate," he said. Irshad Sheikh also claimed men in the mob started shouting 'Jai Shri Ram' and that the two who claimed to be cops then tried to force family members to go to the police station. Aadhaar Cards Genuine Sheikh eventually relented and family members went to the local police station, where, he said, their Aadhaar cards were confiscated and they were made to wait for two hours. "After making us wait for two hours, the woman officer told us to visit again the next day... and warned that if we fail to do so, we would be declared Bangladeshi nationals," he said. Sheikh said he returned the next day. The Aadhaar cards were quickly handed over and "we were asked not to make an issue out of the incident and not file any complaint", he said. "Since our documents are genuine... they are now asking us to stay quiet!" Hakimuddin Sheikh also spoke to PTI. He said, "We have been living in Pune for 50 years. While in Pune, my uncle, Mohammad Salim, was recruited into the Army. What happened with my family was wrong and, if needed, I will speak to the police and seek an explanation." Police Response Deputy Commissioner of Police Somay Munde has dismissed Irshad Sheikh's statements and protests, saying there were no incidents involving a large mob forcing its way into the home. He did, however, admit some police personnel had been sent to verify documents. "The drive against Bangladeshi nationals living in Pune illegally is underway... we received information and went to the house to verify it. Since it was night time, only some male members were asked to accompany the police to the station and, as it was late, they were asked to come back the next day. Prima facie, no illegality was found in their documents," he declared. The police team that visited the house has video footage of the incident, he added.

‘Hate being an Indian': Viral Reddit rant says women's safety, functional infrastructure, basic respect are ‘luxuries'

A Reddit user shared a strong post about feeling upset with India's present condition. 'Proud to be Indian? Look around—rape, filth, corruption, and apathy,' says the social media post. 'Sometimes I genuinely hate being an Indian because this country is a mix of filth, chaos, and hypocrisy,' the post starts on that note. According to the user, it's hard to feel proud when there's so much rape, filth, corruption and public apathy. People ignore traffic rules, spit and litter in public. At the same time, Indians fight over religion and caste. Women don't feel safe, and crimes barely shock anyone now. The user felt angry about paying taxes but still facing bad roads, garbage, floods and poor services. 'We bleed taxes through GST, income tax, tolls, and cess only to get potholes, garbage mountains, and cities drowning after one rain, while our money vanishes into corruption and political drama,' the user wrote. 'Still, we thump our chests calling ourselves a 'superpower' while living in a country where clean streets, women's safety, functional infrastructure, and basic respect for each other are luxuries,' the user added. 'Sometimes it just feels like the majority of us don't care as long as our own bubble isn't disturbed, and it's depressing as hell to watch a nation with so much talent and potential rotting in ignorance, apathy, and mediocrity,' the user concluded. Interestingly, many social media users agreed with the user on the issues. 'Simply drive 1 km on any road and you will understand how india is. Rules are a joke here. Spent millions on cameras and God knows what their use is,' wrote one user. Another user called India 'pretty much the laughing stock of the world'. 'I feel the same way, even people around us made this so normalise that if we try to fix they'll laugh. The other day me and cousins were hanging out in public place and I didn't throw the wrappers in road and kept in my bag to throw it in the dustbin, they all laughed so much,' came from another. One of them went ahead and wrote, 'To be honest, not even proud to be human.'
