'First Wives' actress Mimi Lana values being independent even after marriage
Actress Mimi Lana says she's found personal resonance in her role in the series First Wives .
The eight-episode action drama is Mimi's first starring project since getting married to fellow actor Syafiq Kyle on Feb 14, 2025.
First Wives is centres around childhood friends Diyana (Mimi Lana) and Michelle (Melissa Campbell) who feel betrayed by their respective husbands.
Diyana learns her spouse Azzim (played by Malek McCrone) has secretly married another woman.
Michelle, meanwhile, discovers her partner Roshan (Charles Roberts) has gambled away their life savings, leaving them in debt to the shady Toa Seng (Andy Teh).
Diyana and Michelle then devise a plan to break in to Azzim's safe and steal the money to help pay off Roshan's debt.
However, when their plan goes south, the two women must save each other to avoid landing on the police radar.

The 29-year-old reflected on how she feels more sad than angry for her character, Diyana, who learns that her husband has not been honest or faithful.
'When a woman loves deeply, she's often willing to give up everything for her partner.
'That kind of love and commitment is amazing – but also heartbreaking when it's not appreciated,' said Mimi, who had an on-off romantic relationship with Syafiq for eight years.
The couple got engaged in 2023 but broke up seven months later, only to reconcile and marry in 2025.
Thinking about her own life changes, the newlywed admitted that transitioning from girlfriend to wife brought new insights.
'There are a lot of differences I feel now that he is my husband.
'And only now I realise that being a wife is a big responsibility too and sometimes difficult as well,' Mimi said.
But one thing that she feels strongly about is that everyone – regardless of gender – needs to be independent after marriage, a theme she said the series First Wives showcases.
'Characters like Diyana and Michelle represent many women who, when they get married, end up devoting themselves entirely to the home.
'Some even become so dependent that they don't know how to pay bills or manage household matters on their own.
'Being independent doesn't always mean having a career. Independence comes in many forms,' she said.
'Women need to be active participants in their lives and marriages – not just rely on the idea that 'the man must provide everything'.
'In a marriage, there are two people involved. Both have to be present in that relationship,' Mimi added.
In her own marriage, Mimi shared that she and Syafiq had discussed boundaries around work even before tying the knot – 'and we both know what we should and shouldn't do'.
In fact, Mimi said that at the moment, she is spending most of her time fulfilling her responsibilities as a wife, since she has not yet started filming.
'Alhamdulillah, all blessings come from Allah, and so far, there haven't been any issues with managing my time.
'We only got married two months ago... Please pray that everything goes smoothly for us,' said Mimi, who was last seen on the big screen in the 2024 blockbuster The Experts alongside Syafiq.
What struck Mimi about First Wives was also how the series focuses on women supporting one another and not competing or tearing each other down – a message of friendship and solidarity they are proud to be associated with.
Elaborating on her social media, she wrote: ' First Wives is not just a show, it's a celebration of the strength and beauty of sisterhood. Here's to strong women and the bonds that hold us together.'
Sharing with the media that First Wives was one of the most enjoyable projects she's worked on, the Most Promising Actress nominee at the 2021 Malaysia Film Festival said: 'Melissa and I got really comfortable with each other on set. She speaks English and I speak Malay – it was like chicken and duck – but we really enjoyed ourselves making this series.'
First Wives is available on Astro On Demand and Astro Go. View this post on Instagram

Mimi Lana Ready To Start A Family? Actress Asks Fans To Pray For Her To Have Twins
It's natural for fans to expect their favourite celebrities to start a family after marriage. However, it's more heartwarming when the stars themselves are more excited about having babies, like how actress Mimi Lana is. On 13th August 2025 (Wednesday), the Malaysian actress surprised fans when she posted on Threads, asking them to pray for her to be pregnant with twins. The post writes, 'Can I have everyone pray for me to have twin babies? People say that when many people pray for you, the prayer will be granted.' Needless to say, many of Mimi's fans began praying for the actress's wish to come true. Many also said they look forward to seeing Mimi start a family with husband, actor Syafiq Kyle, noting that their children would inherit their good looks. The 29-year-old then responded to the comments, thanking fans and netizens for the overwhelming support. She also expressed gratitude to those who shared tips to hopefully increase her chance of getting pregnant with twins. Some fans also quipped that the post may be a hint that the 'Mencari Ramlee' actress is currently pregnant. However, Mimi didn't confirm the speculation. Additionally, some of her replies on the Threads post seem to suggest that she's not yet expecting but is just planning for the future. While there has yet to be a Syafiq or Mimi Jr on the way, the star has mentioned that she's ready to become a mother. Mimi and Syafiq announced their engagement in 2023 after eight years together. However, they called off their initial wedding at the last minute. The pair then tied the knot earlier this year on Valentine's Day in a private ceremony, attended by family and close friends. In a May interview, Mimi said that she and Syafiq are ready to start a family, even quipping that her husband has thought about potential baby names. It appears that Mimi and Syafiq are excited to have children of their own. We wish the couple the best in building a family. May they be blessed with some good news soon. Source: Threads

Sarawak records over RM1bil per month in tourism receipts from January to June this year
State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah launching the WAK Festival calendar reveal on Wednesday (Aug 13). - ZULAZHAR SHEBLEE/The Star KUCHING: Sarawak has recorded tourism receipts exceeding RM1bil every month from January to June this year, says Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. The state Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister said this was the best performance achieved by the tourism industry so far. "Tourism receipts include spending on hotels, restaurants, transport, crafts and related expenditure. "In other words, it's the money going into the industry, not just in Kuching but other parts of Sarawak," he said at the calendar reveal of the WAK Festival here on Wednesday (Aug 13). Abdul Karim said the tourism receipts reflected the high numbers of visitors coming to Sarawak in the first half of the year. He said Sarawak was well on track to hit its target of five million visitors this year, having received 2.4mil up to June. "We are looking at 500,000 visitors a month from July onwards, so I'm confident we can reach our target," he said. Abdul Karim said events like the WAK Festival were among the contributing factors attracting tourists to Sarawak. He said the festival, which runs throughout October, had grown from its humble beginnings in 2017, expanding from Kuching to Sibu and Miri last year. "What I love about WAK is that it comes from the community, for the community. "October, which used to be a quiet time, has now turned into an interesting month with a lot of events," he said. Festival director Donald Tan said the WAK acronym was evolving into a new identity this year following the festival's expansion to Sibu and Miri. "WAK used to stand for What About Kuching. We've decided to position ourselves as the WAK Festival which now stands for We Are Kindred," he said. Tan said this year's festival was themed "Roots" to celebrate Sarawak's cultural and historical roots. "It reminds us to honour our shared past even as we grow new connections that branch outward, nurturing fresh collaborations that breathe life into our city's creative landscape," he said. The festival will feature 49 collaborators, 67 unique events and 369 daily activities spread across 44 venues in and around Kuching. Crafts, food and music events are among the highlights. "We want to take creative and artistic activities to street level to engage with the community," Tan said.

Promoting reading habit at Selangor children's book fair
(From left) Mohd Najwan, Amirudin, Mohd Fakhri and Mastura launching the 'Kisah Hidup Imam Al Ghazali' book at the fair. — KK SHAM/The Star THIS year's Selangor Children's Book Fair 2025 featured over 160 booths selling various novels and comics. Introduced in 2022, the four-day fair was organised by Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) and Selangor Education Department. At the launch in Kompleks PKNS Shah Alam, PPAS director Datin Paduka Mastura Muhamad said the programme was aimed at inculcating a reading culture among young children. 'With countless titles available, this is an opportunity for parents to get a better idea of what interests their children. 'It is also a chance for families to spend quality time while browsing the books available,' she said. Mastura said reading was important to support children's cognitive development, which took place largely within the first 12 years of life. Guest of honour Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari recalled when his father brought home newspapers from work. 'I read the paper from cover to cover, going through all the sections, from politics to crime,' he said. His reading habit, which began from the age of six, instilled further curiosity about the world. 'I began having questions which spurred me to find out more. 'Quality reading materials may help empower our future generation.' Amirudin said Selangor had the potential to become a hub for the production of children's books. 'As of July alone, five states have organised book festivals, all of which were initiated in Selangor,' he said. The event also featured the launch of the book Kisah Hidup Imam Al Ghazali by IBDE Ilham Sdn Bhd. There were also storytelling sessions, cultural performances and lucky draws as well as arts and crafts activities. Also present were state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi and IBDE Ilham board of directors member Mohd Fakhri Noor Affandi.
