Premier thanks Satok community for proposal to name Sg Bintangor Bridge after late wife
KUCHING (Aug 6): Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of Satok for their suggestion to name the newly launched Sungai Bintangor Bridge after his late wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang.
Speaking to reporters after officiating at the opening of the bridge last night, Abang Johari said the proposal was deeply meaningful to him and his family.
'First of all, I would like to thank the entire community in Satok, and people of various backgrounds in this area, for their heartfelt gesture in remembering the spirit and legacy of my late wife,' he added.
He acknowledged his late wife as someone who stood firmly beside him throughout his decades of public service in Satok.
'It is true that she was always behind me, especially in my service to the people here in Satok,' he added.
Abang Johari said when the suggestion to name the bridge after Juma'ani was brought forward, he had no hesitation in supporting it.
'I did not think twice. I just want to sincerely thank the villagers and community members who, through their elected representative, made this proposal,' he said.
The proposal was first made during the launch ceremony by Deputy Minister for Utility (Sarawak Energy and Petros) and Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki, who described it as a gesture of appreciation for Juma'ani's dedication and service to the people of Satok.
During the ceremony, Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas also expressed full support for the renaming, saying it was a fitting tribute to Juma'ani's contributions.
The RM50.6 million bridge, located along Jalan Datuk Ajibah Abol, was officially launched in a ceremony held at the bridge site at 8.30pm last night.
The Sungai Bintangor Bridge spans 114.34 metres and features a four-lane dual carriageway and pedestrian walkways, supported by 32 cable stays from a central tower standing 52.1 metres tall.
The structure includes architectural details and carvings inspired by local design elements, further enhancing its visual impact.

Cambodian Senior Minister in Charge of Special Missions (Islamic Affairs) Oknha Datuk Dr Othsman Hassan said they are considering sending their students to further their education in fields like engineering, accounting and law. 'So far, no student from Cambodia has pursued further education in Sarawak because Cambodian students who received scholarships are all placed in Kuala Lumpur. 'We hope the Sarawak Premier (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg) will support the intake of these students… the total number of students has yet to be determined,' he said after paying a courtesy call on the Sarawak Premier at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi here today. Meanwhile, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Project Coordination for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Hall and Islamic Affairs), said the International Islamic School in Sarawak, which is expected to be completed in 2027, would take in students from Regional Islamic Dakwah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP) member countries, including Cambodia. 'So, high school students from Phnom Penh will be invited to study at this international school because it will take into account the intake of students from RISEAP member countries,' he said. He added that during the meeting with Abang Johari, Othsman also urged that Phnom Penh be included as one of AirBorneo's flight destinations when the airline company begins operations. China, India in talks to resume border trade after 5-year pause

Both sides have proposed restarting trade through designated points on the shared border, and the matter is currently under bilateral discussion, the people said, asking not to be identified as the discussions are still private. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Thursday (Aug 14) that Beijing is "willing to step up communication and coordination with India' on the matter. "Border trade between China and India has long played an important role in improving lives of the two countries' border residents,' it said in a response to a query from Bloomberg News. RM14.79 Billion Withdrawn From EPF Flexible Account Since May 2024
Since the introduction of the Flexible Account, or Account 3, in May last year, a total of 4.63 million Employees Provident Fund (EPF) members have made withdrawals amounting to RM14.79 billion as of 30 June 2025. According to the Ministry of Finance, this figure represents 35% of the total 13.2 million members under the age of 55. 'The total savings balance in the Flexible Account currently stands at RM10.16 billion,' the ministry said in a written reply published on the Parliament's website. Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kasim (PN–Arau) had asked when the government would allow the 2025 Special EPF Withdrawal by transferring 30% of Account 1 savings into Account 3 to help the poor cope with the rising cost of living. The Ministry of Finance explained that previous special withdrawals from the Retirement Account (Account 1) were only allowed during the COVID-19 pandemic and were temporary. The EPF's primary mandate as a social protection institution is to ensure sufficient retirement savings to support expenses in old age. In addition, the ministry stressed that withdrawals from Account 1 contradict the EPF's mandate as a trustee of members' retirement savings and are not in line with international standards, which stipulate that governments are responsible for providing nine branches of social protection, including for old-age risks. To balance the long-term, medium-term, and short-term needs of members, the EPF restructured its accounts in May 2024 into three categories – Retirement Account, Sejahtera Account, and Flexible Account – with contribution ratios of 75:15:10, respectively. The Retirement Account (Account 1) is dedicated to old-age savings. The Sejahtera Account (Account 2) allows for pre-retirement withdrawals for purposes such as education, healthcare, and housing. The Flexible Account allows withdrawals at any time, particularly during emergencies. According to the ministry, the government remains sensitive to the people's challenges and has implemented various forms of assistance, such as direct cash aid, targeted subsidies and special incentives, to ease burdens and protect citizens' well-being.
