Habitat for Humanity helps East African family build a new beginning in Abilene
ABILENE, Texas () — After earning an opportunity through the Green Card Lottery program, a family from Eastern Africa secured a home with the help of Habitat for Humanity.
For some, opportunities for betterment don't come as easily as it does for others. That is part of the reason Habitat for Humanity's mission is to build homes, communities and hope for those underprivileged individuals. Just one of the examples of the program's success can be found in the home of Feston Manirakiza. He and his family are from the East African country of Burundi and got the opportunity to come to America as Green Card Lottery winners.
The Green Card Lottery is a U.S. government program that randomly selects individuals from around the world to become legal permanent residents. This program aims to diversify the immigrant population by offering 55,000 visas annually to those from countries with low immigration rates to the United States.
76-year-old Abilenian spends 30 years volunteering for Habitat for Humanity
After coming to the United States, Manirakiza and his family were able to qualify for Habitat for Humanity's home program, which speaks to how the organization gives opportunities to those in similar situations of need.
'Habitat for Humanity gives hope to the hopeless people. I like that. Habitat employees, Habitat.. the volunteers, they gather here. They say Bless the house. Yeah, that's a good memory. A good memory,' Manirakiza said.
Manirakiza now works at Hendrick Medical as a CNA, and his two oldest children are attending college. He says Habitat for Humanity played a large part in giving his family hope and a whole new realm of opportunities that they did not have back in Burundi, Africa.
'People back there are really suffering. You can work, but you can't get enough money to raise your kids, to feed your family. Opportunities to take care of our kids, to go to school, to have a better life. Consider or compare to the one left behind,' Manirakiza explained.

Feston went on to say that his neighborhood is filled with individuals like him who have also received this opportunity from Habitat for Humanity. He mentioned that knowing his neighbors share a similar background helps strengthen the community.

World's Largest Wildlife Bridge Spanning 10 Lanes of 101 Freeway Is Nearly Complete
The latest car news, reviews, and features. Three years after construction began, it's time to dump dirt on the project. Specifically, 6,000 cubic yards of a 'super' soil followed by the planting of 5,000 native flora. I'm talking about the world's largest wildlife crossing, which has reached another construction milestone as the bridge nears completion. This prepared soil is the beginning of the end of construction for the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, which broke ground on Earth Day in 2022. Located in Agoura Hills, California, the nearly one-acre overpass stretches over a 10-lane section of U.S. 101. The physical bridge structure is essentially complete, having required 26 million pounds of concrete, Beth Pratt of the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) told KCAL . The NWF Regional Executive Director added, 'We just put the soil on top, and then we start burying utility lines and extend it over the access road.' Multiple layers of soil will be needed to create a wildlife habitat on the overpass, and the soil application alone will take several weeks. However, when the Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is done, the bridge will reconnect the bisected areas of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. With more than 150,000 acres, SMMNRA is the country's largest urban national park. But the freeways have long isolated the local fauna, from butterflies and cottontails to bobcats and mountain lions. According to the project, as far back as the 1980s, researchers identified the Liberty Canyon area as a choke point for wildlife. However, it wasn't until the National Park Service began a decades-long study of the region's mountain lion population that the 101 freeway was deemed 'the most significant barrier to the ecological health of the region.' More than 300,000 vehicles travel along U.S. 101 daily. That's enough traffic to give a driver anxiety—try being a local critter having to dart across the road just to find dinner. P-22, arguably the most famous mountain lion in and outside of Hollywood, surprised everyone by crossing freeways on his own. He eventually became the poster cat for the 'Save L.A. cougars' campaign. Unfortunately, he was euthanized in late 2022 after being found with severe injuries, likely due to a vehicle collision, and a myriad of other health issues. Mountain lions are the main conservation focus of this wildlife bridge. The big cats are territorial, and being locked in by freeways limits their roaming range and biodiversity. Without the crossing to expand their habitat, SoCal cougars could be extinct within 50 years. They also continue to be killed by vehicles. 'In the Liberty Canyon area where we're putting the crossing, within the last four years, we've had four mountain lions killed just in that general area,' Pratt said. Not just providing access to more sources of food, shelter, and mates, but the bridge would also offer an escape route from wildfires and other disasters. The Annenberg Wildlife Crossing is expected to reach completion next year.

General Mills partners with Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity on Veterans Build
Workers with General Mills participated in a workday with Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity's Veterans Build program, raising walls on a new Webb City home for Navy veteran Janene Houskeeper and her three children Friday. 'Veterans are so wonderful to build for because they served our country,' said Scott Clayton, executive director of Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity. 'We have an opportunity with Habitat that is like no other, to provide an opportunity for a house and to collaborate with local community partners. They gave to our country and now our country is giving back. It comes together so wonderfully.' The General Mills employees are with a group called the Veterans Network, a community made up of veterans and their allies — nonveterans — in the company. They worked to frame the house, raising walls and nailing in supports. 'We're working with our veterans and allies of the company to do what we can to reach out and help the community,' said Jared Sharkey, quality engineer at General Mills. The goal is get out into the community and support veterans, especially in times of need, Sharkey said. Recent projects the group has done include putting American flags on graves at Mount Hope Cemetery in preparation for its Memorial Day ceremony last week. It has several more service projects in the works. General Mills has collaborated with Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity since 2006, when the company helped Habitat purchase a trailer. Clayton said Habitat has done well over 20 workdays with General Mills, and the company has contributed over $300,000 to the program's housing efforts. 'General Mills has been an important partner with us for a long time,' Clayton said. 'Through grants and volunteerism, we've really benefited from our partnership, focusing on veterans. It's come in all different kinds of forms, the good work General Mills has done with us.' Bryan Davis, food safety and quality manager at General Mills, is an Air Force veteran. He said this is the third house General Mills has sponsored with Habitat, providing volunteers and monetary donations of $20,000 for the build. The company has been generous to let the group volunteer on a workday, he said. The last house that employees worked on was a concrete house with Habitat, which was an unusual experience, Davis said. In addition to framing, they often do things such as drywall and painting. 'Working on this house has a special place in my heart because I'm a veteran,' Davis said. 'You always want to give back, especially to veterans in the community. I take a lot of pride in being a veteran and helping those that have helped serve the country.' Davis said he's proud to have a large veteran population at the plant and many allies to volunteer with their projects. Since beginning the Veterans Build program in 2017, Habitat has constructed six houses for veterans. Habitat is looking for more veterans to assist through its new home construction and repair services. KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 — Malaysia aims to take a leading role in shaping the future of global cities as it prepares to bid for the presidency of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) next year. Malaysia aims to hold the presidency from 2025 to 2027, which comprises 193 United Nations member states. 'This would be the first time Malaysia has been elected to head the Executive Board of UN-Habitat,' Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming told Mingguan Malaysia in an interview published today. 'It's not easy to get support from 193 countries, but we are working towards it,' he added. UN-Habitat is the UN's leading agency on urban development, sustainability and housing. As president, Malaysia will have the rare opportunity to set the agenda for global urbanisation policy and sustainable city living. 'Malaysia is not only known for nasi lemak and durians. 'We are now also recognised for good governance, transparency, and our commitment to urban transformation,' Nga was quoted as saying. He said the appointment was a direct result of the country's improved international image under the current government. He believes this global platform will benefit Malaysians by attracting foreign investors, technology transfers, and support for smart, sustainable development across the country. Nga noted that many Malaysian initiatives – such as green cities, circular economy policies and low-carbon development – have drawn praise internationally. 'We have proven that even as a developing country, we can lead by example in creating sustainable, inclusive cities.' The minister hopes Malaysia's leadership will inspire public confidence and counter local cynicism about the government's development agenda. 'It's time we stop doubting ourselves. The world believes in Malaysia – so should we,' Nga was quoted as saying. He also used the platform to promote unity and humility in service. 'We must be humble to learn. My slogan is: the Malay child is our child, the Chinese child is our child, the Indian child is our child – and the same for Sabah and Sarawak.'
