Huge timber-framed manor house for sale for just £185,000
A MANOR house with an acre of walled gardens in Herefordshire is up for sale with a guide price of just £185,000... but there's a catch, with any potential buyer needing to be keen to roll up their sleeves. The incredible Burghill Lodge is up for sale as a restoration opportunity with agents Glasshouse. Tucked away in rolling Herefordshire countryside, the grade II listed 17th century oak timber framed manor house offers an "unprecedented opportunity" to restore the house to create an "extraordinary" family home, the agents said. ALSO READ: 'Highly unique' farmhouse with woodland and streams is up for sale Mysteries of forgotten castle are being revealed Inside the village hotel dating back to William the Conqueror The house is currently a shell, stripped back to its oak timber frame and supported by a scaffolding cover. Planning consent is in place for work to commence to create a huge six-bedroom home. The property comes complete with an acre of garden, surrounded by a brick wall. Official listing information from Historic England describes the house, which was listed in 1952 and resurveyed in 1986, as being in "ruinous condition", and featuring three gables with two six-pane windows to each and a central six-panelled door. The entry said the home, which at the time had weatherboard cladding and a corrugated metal roof, formerly had various 17th century plaster ceilings which were moved during the early 20th century to The Lodge next door. At the time of the 1986 resurvey, its interior was inaccessible, the listing says.

'Conflicted' mum considers giving up £70k job as maternity leave comes to an end
A mother has admitted to feeling "conflicted" about returning to her £ 70,000-a-year job after having her second child. Although it would mean a "big financial hit," she was "struggling to see the benefits" of returning to work when her maternity leave ended. Despite having childcare arrangements "in place", she was loving the idea of being around her kids more. READ MORE: Judge tells lying mum 'your decision to fall pregnant was silly' Taking to Mumsnet to share her dilemma, she said: "This is my second mat leave with my baby. My older child is 4 years old and starting school next year. "I love spending time with both of them. However, my older child is in preschool term time only. "My maternity leave is coming to an end soon, and I am feeling so conflicted about going back, though I was always clear that I'd go back. "I got this job after working for 15 years and it's a good role for my future and career path. "I will also be finishing a degree from work soon when I go back and it will be helpful for my career. "But, at this point, I am struggling to see all these benefits when I think about going back to work." The mum continued: "I love the convenience of being at home around kids and picking them up from preschool, taking them to parks etc. "Husband works full time and doesn't take much time off due to being self-employed. "I am on £70k, hence giving up my job would mean a big financial hit. "Baby would be going to a childminder who is 5 mins walk from our home, so she won't be far. "I am feeling very conflicted still despite having all arrangements in place. Any advice is appreciated." One supportive comment read: "It's really hard. I actually found returning from second mat leave even harder than first time round. "Could you explore flexible working requests/or part-time at all? That might make the balance feel more appropriate." The mum replied: "I will be going back to only 2 days a week for couple of months. "And I can work flexibly. Still, finding it bit hard to think about going back." A second forum user added: "Going back to work was definitely the hardest thing for me, and I still don't have the balance down yet (house work has definitely been taking a hit)."

Mysterious disappearance of four rare birds sparks concern for their survival
Four breeding male hen harriers have vanished from their nests. The birds disappeared from the Forest of Bowland in Lancashire and RSPB Geltsdale Nature Reserve in Cumbria during an eight-day period in May. Hen harriers are a rare, red-listed species, and their decline in the UK has long been linked to illegal killing. Chris Hind, a volunteer at Geltsdale RSPB Reserve, said: "We were incredibly hopeful that our efforts would pay off, but nothing was guaranteed. "To see these birds take to the sky after weeks of tough work is fantastic but, as with all hen harriers in the UK, these birds face an uncertain future." Despite the loss of the males, RSPB staff and volunteers managed to help five chicks fledge from two of the affected nests by providing emergency food to the females, who would otherwise have abandoned the young. In Bowland, one of the missing males was a satellite-tagged bird known as Dynamo. His tag suddenly stopped transmitting, with no evidence of malfunction. READ MORE: Council preparing new housing strategy for coming decade Mountain rescue team rescue woman with suspected broken leg from moors Reform council leader lands £30k a year gig heading party on national body Dynamo is the 115th tagged hen harrier to disappear in the UK since 2010. Lancashire and Cumbria police launched investigations, but no charges have been brought. Mark Thomas, RSPB head of investigations UK, said: "Sadly, these four missing hen harriers are just the latest in a long line of identical incidents recorded over decades and demonstrate the catastrophic knock-on effect to the breeding success and recovery of this species. "Those killing hen harriers do so with little or no fear of recrimination. "Now is the time for the Westminster government to act on licensing this industry, if it is truly serious about the conservation of this amazing species."
