‘Section of girls getting involved in drug abuse': Tripura CM Manik Saha
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha Sunday reiterated that the state government has a zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related activities.
Speaking at a government event in Dhalai district, CM Saha said, 'We have seen recently that a section of girls has got addicted to drugs. Drug abuse through intravenous injection is on the rise in the state. This practice can lead to the spread of HIV/AIDS.' He added that the state was also being used as a corridor for illegal drug trade.
The chief minister informed the audience that the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has sanctioned Rs 198 crore to set up a special de-addiction centre at Bishramganj in Sepahijala district. In addition to this, the state government is also setting up de-addiction centres in all eight districts of Tripura.
He added that drug seizures increased by 103 per cent and destruction of drugs by 132 per cent in 2024-25 in comparison to the previous year.
Meanwhile, CM Saha also stated that his government will honour the tripartite insurgent surrender agreement signed last year by the Centre, the state government, and insurgent outfits – National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) – and fulfill the promises made to the surrendered cadres of both the banned militant groups.

Ice cream vendor gets 20yrs RI for sexual assault of 6yo boy
Agra: A special Pocso court in Agra on Monday sentenced a 27-year-old ice cream vendor to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 6-year-old boy in 2022. During the trial proceedings, the vendor denied the charges, but the court took cognisance of the child's testimony to nail him. On July 23, that year, the accused, known to the boy playing near his father's shop, lured him away with the promise of playing with him. He then took him to a secluded spot where he violated the child. Hearing the boy's cries, locals ran to the spot and the accused fled. An FIR was registered the next day under IPC sections 363 (kidnapping), 377 (crime linked to same sex) and the Pocso Act following a complaint by the boy's father. The ice cream vendor was subsequently arrested. A chargesheet was submitted on Aug 5, 2022, by the investigating officer before the court. Special prosecuting officer Madhav Sharma said the incident took place on the afternoon of July 23 when the accused, who used to operate his ice cream cart in a locality in Agra, took the boy with him. In his statement before the court, the accused denied all allegations against him, maintaining "he was not present at the time of crime". He claimed that a dispute between him and the boy's father over the placement of the ice-cream cart motivated the complainant to hatch a plan to implicate him in a false case. During sentencing, the defence also argued that the accused was a young man with no criminal antecedents and requested leniency, added Sharma. Additional district and sessions judge Shiv Kumar dismissed the plea and pronounced the accused guilty. A fine of Rs 30,000 was also imposed on the convict, and the court directed that half of the amount be given to the boy's family for rehabilitation.

CBI books RPF inspector for demanding bribe from UP farmer
Lucknow: A Railway Protection Force (RPF) inspector was booked by the CBI for demanding a bribe of Rs 60,000 from an Uttar Pradesh farmer who was involved in a freak accident in which a railway crossing's barrier collapsed on his tractor trolley, an official said on Monday. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) booked Inspector G.S. Gautam on the complaint of Dhanraj Verma, a resident of Maharajgang in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya district. The federal probe agency booked Gautam and unknown others on June 26 under charges of criminal conspiracy and corruption involving a public servant accepting or obtaining any gratification. The FIR said, 'It has been alleged in the complaint that G.S. Gautam has threatened to register a case against him and slap false charges. Gautam demanded a bribe of Rs 60,000 from the complainant in lieu of settling the matter and for non-forfeiture of the tractor-trolley of the complainant.' The bribe was demanded in the backdrop of the incident on June 23, around 11.30 a.m. at railway crossing number 96 in Akbarpur. The complainant said that on the day of the incident, he was crossing the barrier when its bar fell on his tractor. 'I drove back home after the situation normalised after the incident,' said Verma. The tractor owner said, in his complaint to CBI, that after some time, Inspector Gautam and some of his colleagues came to his home and threatened to file a case against him. 'The inspector offered to reduce the gravity of my offence if I gave him a bribe of Rs 60,000,' he said, adding that the RPF Inspector gave him two days to arrange the bribe money. The complainant alleged that on June 25, the inspector again came to his home and threatened to slap serious charges and seize his tractor trolley if the bribe was not paid. Verma was not keen on paying the bribe, so he approached the CBI and complained against Gautam. On receiving Verma's complaint, CBI, ACB, Lucknow, verified it and prepared a report which said, 'The above mentioned facts and discreet verification prima facie disclose commission of offence punishable under section 61(2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 and Section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) on the part of G. S. Gautam, Inspector, RPF, Akbarpur, UP, and unknown others.'

The explosion took place in a drying unit at Sigachi Industries Private Limited, located in the Pashamylaram industrial area in the Sangareddy district. The fire caused part of the building to collapse, trapping workers under the debris. Emergency teams, including 11 fire department vehicles, were deployed and efforts were underway to locate any persons who have ben traipped. The firing reportedly occurred near Mongjang village in the district around 2 pm as the victims were travelling in a car. Initial reports suggested that they were shot at point-blank range, the police said. Telangana MLA T Raja Singh has quit the Bharatiya Janata Party, expressing shock at reports saying that former Member of Legislative Council N Ramachander Rao was set to be the next state party chief. The MLA, however, said he remained committed to the ideology of Hindutva, and that he would 'continue to raise my voice and stand with the Hindu community with even greater strength'. The Supreme Court has declined to entertain a petition seeking directions to hand over the control and management of Bihar's Mahabodhi Mahavira temple in Bodh Gaya to Buddhists. The bench, however, said that the petitioner could approach the Patna High Court instead. The petition was filed by former Maharashtra minister Sulekha Kumbhare, who sought amendments to the Bodh Gaya Temple Act 1949. The Act states that a committee constituted by the Bihar government will look after the 'management and control' of the Mahabodhi temple and its property. The law says that the committee should include eight members nominated by the state government and four of them should be Hindus. The district magistrate will double as the chairman of the committee, provided the official is a Hindu. In February, several Buddhist monks began an indefinite hunger strike in Bodh Gaya, demanding full control of the Mahabodhi temple. This was followed by rallies organised in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana and Tamil Nadu, culminating in a massive rally in Bodh Gaya on March 18 and 19.
