No pollution clearance, two Noida brick kilns shut after surprise checks
Noida: Two brick kilns, found operating without pollution board NOCs, were shut down on Tuesday after a joint team, comprising officials from the district mining department,
pollution control board
(regional office), and fire department, conducted a surprise inspection.
The kilns were located in the Mahmadpur and Asmanpur areas of Greater Noida. Officials said the drive was launched following complaints on the integrated grievance redressal system (IGRS) portal about illegal kiln operations in the region.
"The fire department was summoned to extinguish the fires at the operational kilns, and raw bricks were also destroyed on site to prevent further production," said Utkarsh Tripathi, district mining officer. He added that one more kiln was found shut at the time of the raid.
Vikash Mishra, regional officer of UPPCB in Greater Noida, said, "The operators had not deposited the required regulation fees, nor had they obtained NOCs from the pollution control board. We have taken action and issued warnings."
Officials stressed that such unauthorised operations cause significant environmental harm and financial losses to the government. They also often involve unregulated mining activity, further exacerbating the damage.
The crackdown comes in line with guidelines issued by the commission for
air quality management
(CAQM), which state that restrictions on brick kilns must be enforced when the air quality index (AQI) reaches the 'severe' level under Stage III of the graded response action plan (GRAP). The CAQM advisory mandates the use of only approved fuels in industrial units and brick kilns across NCR, with violations warranting closure.
District officials confirmed that more surprise checks will follow to deter illegal brick kiln operations and strengthen environmental enforcement.
