Woman's mutilated body found in Hathras, police arrest kin for murder

Hathras (UP), Aug 12 (PTI) Two days after a woman's mutilated body was found along a canal bank here, police arrested her father and step-grandfather in connection with the murder.
The woman's stepmother has also been detained in the matter, police said.
Investigations began on August 10 after villagers in the Bahardoi Shahbazpur area spotted the dismembered body near an irrigation canal. Five police teams were formed to investigate the case as initial efforts to identify the victim failed.
On Monday, the police identified the victim as Tamanna (19) from Adhauna village in Akrabad, Aligarh district. Her uncle, Abdul Farahim Khan, confirmed the identity and lodged a complaint against unidentified persons.
During the investigation, police found that the woman's father, Hasrat Ali, her step-mother, and the step-grandfather, Rajjo Pehalwan alias Raju from Alhaipur village in Hathras district, were involved in the murder, they said.
On Tuesday morning, police arrested Hasrat and Rajjo near a canal in Salempur, and detained the stepmother from her parental home in Alhaipur.
According to police, Hasrat had divorced Tamanna's mother six years ago and remarried, following which she lived with her father and stepmother.
In July, she allegedly left home with a young man from Aligarh for a short time before returning. This allegedly enraged Hasrat and his second wife, leading to harassment and physical abuse, police said.
On August 8, Tamanna left her home quietly in the afternoon but was intercepted by her father and stepmother near the Panethi Bridge in Aligarh. Fearing social stigma, the two plotted to kill her and also involved the step-father.

Superintendent of Police Chiranjeev Nath Sinha said, 'the girl was lured to her step-grandfather's house in Chandpa, where she was drugged, strangled, and then taken to the canal. There, the stepmother and step-grandfather held her while the father slit her throat with a knife." 'They also dishevelled her clothing to mislead investigators about the nature of the crime," he said.
All three suspects were arrested within 48 hours, and the team that solved the case will receive a reward of Rs 25,000, Sinha added. Catering businessman duped of Rs 3 lakh in admission fraud
Pune: A 51-year-old catering businessman registered a complaint with the Kondhwa police on Monday, stating that a fraudster duped him of Rs 2.80 lakh on the pretext of securing admission for his son in an engineering course at a city-based college since Aug 10, 2024. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Assistant inspector Rakesh Jadhav said on Tuesday that the businessman from Kondhwa Budruk came across a cellphone number of the fraudster posing as an agent on a social media site. The fraudster claimed he was helping parents and students secure admission in engineering colleges. Jadhav said the businessman contacted the fraudster over the phone and met him numerous times. During these meetings, the fraudster boasted of having good contacts with college officials and assured the businessman that he could help his son gain admission in a college of their choice. The police officer said the fraudster lured the businessman into paying a donation of Rs 2.8 lakh for securing admission. The victim, without verifying the fraudster's credentials, paid the donation in cash and online. The fraudster later issued a letter to the victim stating that his son had received provisional admission in an engineering college. The victim realised he was tricked after the college officials informed him that the letter was fake. After the fraudster failed to repay the money, the caterer initially filed a complaint application. Following verification, an FIR was registered. The police officer added that a police team was working on some clues to trace the fraudster as early as possible.

Ballia foodgrain scam: Former distributor held
Lucknow: Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Tuesday arrested a former ration distributor from Ballia in connection with the Rs 61 lakh foodgrain scam. The scam pertains to misappropriation of govt funds allocated for the implementation of the Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana between 2002 and 2005. It aimed to carry out various developmental works such as soil work, drainage construction, road repairs, and bridge construction in several villages of the Gadwar block in Ballia. However, these projects were found to be incomplete and not up to the required standards. Investigations revealed that officials, including the block development officer, block head, village development officer and ration distributors, colluded to embezzle approximately Rs 61 lakh.
