Hit, run, repeat: 200 lives lost in 4 months in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The mowing down of a security guard by an SUV driver near Mahipalpur flyover on Sunday has brought the number of
hit-and-run cases
in Delhi this year to a staggering 503. Nearly 200 people were killed in these incidents - an average of 11 lives lost each week.
Since 2023, about 1,500 people have lost their lives in hit-and-run cases across the national capital, revealed Delhi Police data. While 666 people were killed in 2023, the toll stood at 644 in 2024 and 190 till April 30, 2025. The data also showed that on a daily average, two persons were killed in 1,481 fatal crashes.
A total of 2,810 people were injured in the incidents since 2023 - an average of three people daily. While 1,275 people were injured in 2023, next year saw 1,121 injuries.

So far this year, 414 people have been injured.
According to police, there are several factors behind hit-and-runs. The most common is speeding, where drivers tend to lose control of the vehicle. Other causes include drunk driving and using mobile phones.
"In hit-and-run cases, the drivers often do not stop, thinking they won't get caught or that no one would notice their vehicle number. Some also believe stopping could lead to them being beaten up," a senior police officer said.
Most of the victims in hit-and-run cases were pedestrians - 343 were killed in 2023; 309 in 2024; and 92 in 2025. This was followed by two-wheeler riders, with 270 fatalities in 2023, 288 in 2024, and 88 this year.
According to police, pedestrians are the most vulnerable due to various factors. These include attempting to cross busy roads quickly, speeding by vehicles, and lack of accessible foot-over bridges, leading them to cross roads directly.
Jaywalking and mobile phone distraction while walking also add to the risk. Two-wheelers remain vulnerable due to the absence of dedicated lanes and riders taking shortcuts, which can lead to accidents.
Special commissioner of police (traffic) Ajay Chaudhry said the department consistently organises awareness programmes aimed at educating road users and promoting safer driving habits in order to reduce the number of road accidents.
Regular enforcement actions are carried out against people violating traffic rules, particularly those engaging in high-speed driving, drunk driving and other serious offences, he added.
Rohit Baluja, president, Institute of Road Traffic Education, said drivers lack awareness of the legal consequences of hit-and-run cases, which needs to be addressed. He emphasised the importance of forensic analysis in solving such cases.
He also suggested public awareness campaigns to encourage people to report hit-and-run incidents and, if possible, take photos of the offending vehicles.
Baluja noted the absence of pedestrian pathways and encroachment of footpaths, which forces pedestrians to cross busy roads and leaves them vulnerable. For two-wheelers, the lack of dedicated lanes means they have to navigate heavy traffic, increasing risk of accidents, he added.

Spying ring: YouTuber Jasbir Singh's arrest unveils financial links, Pakistan Day event connection

Mohali: The arrest of YouTuber Jasbir Singh on charges of spying for Pakistan has led to a string of shocking revelations, exposing deeper financial links and suspicious connections to a Pakistan Day event in Delhi, revealed sources in Punjab Police's state special operations cell (SSOC) in Mohali. Jasbir, who is in two-day remand of SSOC) Mohali, is under investigation for alleged involvement in espionage activities and his ties with individuals linked to Pakistani agencies. According to sources, a 32-year-old woman from Jalandhar, said to be a close associate of Jasbir, was summoned and interrogated by SSOC for several hours. Her name surfaced during Jasbir's questioning. Investigators found she accompanied Jasbir to Delhi on multiple occasions and was present with him at a Pakistan Day programme. Access to the event was strictly through digital invitations, which Jasbir managed to procure through alleged links with a man named Danish, said to be a key figure in the espionage network, according to the sources. The interrogation of the woman revealed that Jasbir not only introduced her to several individuals in Delhi, but also provided her with financial support over a period of time. Investigating officers are now examining her bank accounts to determine the purpose of these transactions and whether they were directed by foreign handlers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Sources have also started examining her phone and social media accounts, while forensic experts continue analysing Jasbir's digital devices. Preliminary findings from Jasbir's laptop indicate that several applications were installed by an IAS officer, now under scrutiny. After the recent arrest of Haryana-based social media influencer Jyoti Malhotra, Jasbir allegedly deleted multiple applications from his system — a move investigators believe was an attempt to erase incriminating evidence. A forensics team is working to recover the deleted data, which could lead to further breakthroughs. One of the most alarming discoveries came from Jasbir's mobile phone, which contained over 150 contacts, many allegedly linked to Pakistan's ISI and army officers. According to investigators, Jasbir frequently communicated with these individuals. He was reportedly encouraged to create and promote content that portrayed Pakistan positively and to influence Indian youth through his platform. "Jasbir was advised by his handlers to bring more young Indians into the fold," said a senior police official on the pretext of anonymity. "Danish, in particular, was keen on expanding his network by including more women," he said. With multiple leads emerging from Jasbir's confession and digital trail, the SSOC continues to probe deeper into what could be part of a larger espionage and propaganda network operating across borders.

NCB freezes Rs 9.20 crore immovable assets of prime accused linked to Mexican drug cartel

NEW DELHI: The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has attached a flat and a factory premises worth Rs 9.20 crore in Uttar Pradesh's Noida of a 'prime' accused involved in a 2024 trans-national drugs trafficking case linked to a Mexican cartel, officials said on Sunday. The officials said that the federal anti-narcotics agency has recently secured a confirmation on the attachment from the designated competent authority and administrator constituted under the Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act (SAFEMA) and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. According to them, the case pertains to the seizure of over 95 kg of Amphetamine and the unearthing of a clandestine narcotics manufacturing laboratory in Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh in October last year. Five people, including a Tihar Jail warden, a Mexican national part of a drug cartel operating from that country, a Mumbai-based chemist and two Delhi-based businessmen, were arrested by the NCB team then. The agency, as part of the probe, attached immovable assets of one of the accused businessmen, also a 'prime accused' in the case, worth Rs 9.20 crore. 'These included a luxury apartment in Jaypee Greens residential society and a factory premises in Kasna Industrial Area of Gautam Budh Nagar (Uttar Pradesh), which were acquired using proceeds from international narcotics trafficking,' a senior NCB official said. The NCB and the Special Cell of the Delhi Police had jointly busted the factory, as the syndicate, including the five arrested people, was involved in 'transnational smuggling' of synthetic drugs. All the arrested are presently lodged in jail under judicial custody, the officials said. The factory was 'financed' by the CJNG - Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación - a notorious Mexican cartel, which transferred money to Dubai using cryptocurrency, the official claimed, adding: 'The amount was then received in Delhi in cash by the accused through hawala, facilitated in three separate instalments'.
