Perseverance Mars rover becomes 1st spacecraft to spot auroras from the surface of another world

NASA's Perseverance rover just made skywatching history.
The car-sized Perseverance spied auroras in Mars' skies in mid-March, becoming the first-ever spacecraft to witness such a light show from the surface of another planet.
"This exciting discovery opens up new possibilities for auroral research and confirms that auroras could be visible to future astronauts on Mars' surface," Elise Knutsen, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oslo in Norway and lead author of a study about the news, said in a statement.
Auroras occur when charged particles from the sun collide with molecules in planetary atmospheres. Earth's magnetic field channels most of those solar particles toward its poles, which is why auroral displays on our planet are generally limited to high latitudes — that is, except on certain occasions when particularly big clouds of solar plasma known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs) hit us.
Mars, however, doesn't have a global magnetic field anymore, it disappeared long ago and caused the once-wet world to dry out. Because of this, the Red Planet's auroral shows are different than those we get on Earth. The arrival of a big CME, for example, tends to set the whole Martian sky aglow.
These alien auroras have been observed from Mars orbit before, but no surface craft had managed to capture the phenomenon. Knutsen and her team set out to make history.
They calculated the best angle at which to point two key Perseverance instruments — its MastCam-Z camera system and SuperCam spectrometer — at the Martian sky. They also worked with researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland to identify Mars-bound CMEs that could spark detectable auroral displays.
The Goddard scientists flagged one such outburst on March 15. That alert was noticed by space physicist Christina Lee of the University of California, Berkeley, the space weather lead for NASA's MAVEN Mars orbiter. Lee, in turn, issued a notice to other Mars mission teams, including Knutsen and her colleagues.
"When we saw the strength of this one, we estimated it could trigger aurora bright enough for our instruments to detect," Knutsen said.
That was indeed the case. The CME slammed into Mars' thin atmosphere a few days later, generating a green aurora that was pretty much uniform across the Red Planet's skies. (As on Earth, the green auroral glow was caused by light-emitting oxygen atoms.)
MAVEN and another Mars orbiter, Europe's Mars Express, detected solar energetic particles in the atmosphere at the time, confirming that Perseverance did indeed record a Martian aurora from the planet's surface.
"This was a fantastic example of cross-mission coordination," MAVEN Principal Investigator Shannon Curry, a research scientist at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder, said in the same statement.
"We all worked together quickly to facilitate this observation and are thrilled to have finally gotten a sneak peek of what astronauts will be able to see there some day,' added Curry, a co-author of the new paper.

Perseverance's aurora observations, which were described in a study published Wednesday (May 14) in the journal Science Advances, have more than just gee-whiz appeal. After all, auroras result from space weather, which can have profound effects on spacecraft and people that venture beyond our planet's protective magnetic bubble.
"Perseverance's observations of the visible-light aurora confirm a new way to study these phenomena that's complementary to what we can observe with our Mars orbiters," Katie Stack Morgan, acting project scientist for Perseverance at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California who was not part of the study team, said in the statement.
"A better understanding of auroras and the conditions around Mars that lead to their formation are especially important as we prepare to send human explorers there safely," added Stack Morgan.

It also states a low chance for poor weather in the booster recover area, which will stationed east of Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. According to Space Launch Delta 45, the rocket will travel on an eastern trajectory upon liftoff. This is a rare occasion as Starlink launches typically fly southeast or northeast. No middle-of-the-night sonic booms will be heard on the Space Coast, as the rocket's first stage will land on a SpaceX drone ship stationed out on the Atlantic Ocean. When is the next Florida launch? Update 12:20 a.m.: On May 27, Starship launched again from Texas on its ninth test flight. While the ship (upper stage) made it further than the previous two flights, it ended up in a spin which caused it to break apart over the Indian Ocean. SpaceX had also hoped to test the deployment of a payload, which were mockup Starlink satellites, on this mission. The payload door failed to open correctly. One thing which went correctly was the high quality footage beamed via Starlink. SpaceX posted the following images to X. Tonight's Falcon 9 liftoff is set for 1:24 a.m. Update 12:05 a.m.: Starlink posted a customer photo of Starlink service at work out on the water. SpaceX Starlink internet boasts service almost anywhere the sky is visible. This includes places where cell phone service isn't available. The northern lights may be visible over a large swath of New England tonight due to a large geomagnetic storm, possibly even dipping into northern Rhode Island. "The G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm watch remains in effect for tonight, June 1st (EDT), as CME passage continues," the Space Weather Prediction Center said in a 2 p.m. alert on June 1. "There are indications that the coronal mass ejection (CME) passage is weakening, but the solar wind conditions remain elevated, therefore additional periods of G3-G4 (Strong-Severe) levels remain possible. However, we now anticipate that conditions should weaken enough by tomorrow evening, June 2nd (EDT), that G1 (Minor) storm levels is the most likely peak response." The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center prediction map is showing that all of New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont have a chance to see the spectacle tonight, including a large chunk of Massachusetts. The possible view line is just touching Rhode Island, meaning there's a chance that people will see them. The question is, will the weather cooperate? AccuWeather is currently forecasting partly cloudy skies, so if the lights reach it's possible cloud cover will be a problem. The sun is currently at solar maximum, according to NASA, the peak of activity in its natural cycle, which is creating more opportunities to see the northern lights. Here's what to know. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) aurora forecast, the northern lights may reach to Rhode Island tonight, but only in the northern tip of the state. However, odds improve if people make a trip to Massachusetts where much of the state is firmly in the view line, and become even better in northern New England and New York. The northern lights are typically most visible between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. according to NOAA. "Best aurora is usually within an hour or two of midnight (between 10 PM and 2 AM local time)," the said. "These hours of active aurora expand towards evening and morning as the level of geomagnetic activity increases. There may be aurora in the evening and morning but it is usually not as active and therefore, not as visually appealing." As always, dark skies make for better stargazing. "We typically suggest getting away from cities and find a open field or hilltop to lay out under the stars and wait for the show to really peak at the late evening or early morning hours," Massachusetts Institute of Technology Technical Instructor and Observatory Manager Tim Brothers said in a past interview with Wicked Local. He continued, "In New England, heading for a local conservation area or park that keeps lighting off at night is ideal. Another option is a coastline away from the larger cities — the benefit being that the constellation where you will see most of the 'shooting stars.'"
