Erdogan to Syria's Al-Sharaa: Turkiye opposes Israeli aggression

Shafaq News6 days ago

Shafaq News/ On Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned Israel's occupation and aggression on Syrian territory, calling it 'unacceptable' and affirming that Turkiye will continue to oppose it on all international platforms.
Erdogan made the remarks during a meeting in Istanbul with Syrian transitional President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, who is making his first visit to Turkiye following the United States and European Union's decision to lift sanctions on Syria.
Erdogan voiced optimism for Syria's future, welcomed the lifting of international sanctions, and stressed the need to preserve Syria's territorial integrity under centralized governance.
He also affirmed that Turkiye would continue to deepen bilateral cooperation in energy, defense, and transportation, upholding the principles of neighborly and fraternal ties.
For his part, President Al-Sharaa thanked Erdogan for his support and 'pivotal efforts' in ending the sanctions.
Erdogan and Al-Sharaa held three official meetings since Al-Sharaa assumed office in January 2025. Their initial meeting occurred in Ankara in February.

Barcelona cuts ties with Israel over Gaza massacres

Shafaq News/ On Friday, Barcelona's city council voted to sever institutional relations with the Israeli government and suspend its friendship agreement with the city of Tel Aviv 'until international law is respected and the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people are guaranteed.' The decision, which includes around twenty measures, was supported by the ruling Socialist Party in Barcelona, several left-wing parties, and pro-independence groups. It calls for cutting institutional ties with the 'current Israeli government' and suspending the friendship pact signed on September 24, 1998, between Barcelona and Tel Aviv. Barcelona's Socialist mayor, Jaume Collboni, said the 'level of suffering and death witnessed in Gaza over the past year and a half, along with repeated Israeli government attacks in recent weeks, makes any relationship between the two cities unsustainable.' Among other measures included in the decision, some beyond the municipality's authority, the city council called on the board of the Barcelona trade fair to bar Israeli government pavilions, 'arms companies, or any sector benefiting from genocide, occupation, apartheid, and colonialism against the Palestinian people.' A similar recommendation is under consideration for the Port of Barcelona, advising it not to receive ships involved in transporting arms to Israel. It is not the first time Barcelona has suspended ties with the government of Benjamin Netanyahu. In February 2023, former mayor and social activist Ada Colau also decided to suspend relations with Israel and cancel twinning agreements with Tel Aviv. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has urged all European Union member states to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement and impose an arms embargo on Israel. 'It is unacceptable to remain silent in the face of violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza and the killing of more than 50,000 people,' Sánchez said, stressing that there must be no 'double standards' between Ukraine and Gaza. Spain, which recognized the State of Palestine a year ago, renewed its call for an immediate halt to the war in Gaza and the urgent entry of humanitarian aid.

SDF's Abdi: open to dialogue with Damascus over decentralization

Shafaq News/ On Friday, the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, vowed that any integration of the SDF into the Syrian military must come as part of a comprehensive political agreement based on decentralization within a mutually accepted national framework. In an interview with Shams TV, Abdi said such a process could take years, rejecting what he described as quick or superficial solutions that fail to address the core of the Kurdish issue. 'We are committed to preserving our achievements and will not accept any arrangements that take us back to square one,' Abdi said. While acknowledging that Kurds have faced decades of marginalization, Abdi affirmed that they remain open to dialogue with Damascus. He stressed that the SDF is a fundamental part of Syria's future and added, 'We will not accept a repeat of the marginalization we have endured.' Earlier in March, Abdi and Syria's transitional President, Ahmad Al-Sharaa, reached an agreement to integrate the SDF into the country's official military structure, transferring all its territories, border crossings, and oil fields while rejecting any calls for division.

Turkiye's Erdogan urges Russia – Ukraine leaders' summit

Shafaq News/ Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan affirmed Ankara's support for the continuation of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, according to a statement from the Turkish presidency. In a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zeknskyy, Erdogan emphasized the need for high-level delegations from both sides to participate and called for a leaders' summit to follow once talks between the delegations in Istanbul are concluded. Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan noted that both Russia and Ukraine are seeking a ceasefire, urging both sides to reaffirm their readiness to negotiate. Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed, in a call with his US counterpart Marco Rubio, Moscow's readiness to negotiate a comprehensive agreement with Kyiv. On May 16, Turkiye facilitated the first direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in three years, held in Istanbul, where both sides agreed to a large-scale prisoner exchange involving 1,000 people from each side and continued negotiations toward a truce.
