Jockey following in the footsteps of Hayley Turner gets big break at ITV meeting
Taryn Langley is treading a path that proved pivotal in the career of Turner as she makes her first appearance on a big Saturday card in the Northumberland Plate
Taryn Langley could be the secret ingredient that can deliver Northumberland Plate glory for Duke Of Oxford today. The 20-year-old, an apprentice for only 14 months, gets her first chance in front of the ITV cameras and she would like to make it count.
Langley, who has ridden 17 winners including ten this year, has had no previous connection to the Michael Bell stable. But the trainer who helped propel Hayley Turner into the limelight has given her the responsibility of turning last year's third place in the 'Pitmens' Derby' into something even better.
'My apprentice Joe Bradnam was going to ride but he couldn't do the weight,' explains Bell. 'Taryn is riding plenty of winners and is claiming 7lb. Duke Of Oxford is a regular in these races. It's not going to be easy off a mark of 95 but the 7lb claim should make him very competitive.'
Langley secured her biggest win so far on Tides Of War in a valuable 2m handicap at Lingfield on Good Friday for her boss David Simcock, the other trainer who helped the legendary Turner, who announced her retirement in April, achieve Group 1 honours. It is Turner, rider of more than 1,000 winners, who has made the pathway along which Langley hopes to progress.
'Hayley was always very supportive towards me and never too busy to sit down and look at a race with me," says Taryn. "She has always been an influence into which direction I want to push my career. Hayley was the first female to start pushing the boundaries for us fellow girls coming through behind her."
She continues, "This will be the first time Michael Bell has put me up. It's great that he has decided to use me and has the faith to put me up on a horse like Duke Of Oxford. I had been booked to go to Windsor for my boss David Simcock but he said this was too good an opportunity to refuse. The horse walked past me the other morning and looked as fit as a flea, an absolute picture.'
Langley, originally from the Cotswolds, showjumped as a child and was a late convert to racehorses. She rode as an amateur before taking out her apprentice licence with Richard Hughes, then late last year moved to Newmarket and secured a job with Simcock, who with Bell provided Turner with her Group 1 successes.
'It's opened up a lot more contacts for me,' she says. 'I wouldn't have been as busy as I have without David Simcock encouraging me to ride out at other yards.'
With business picking up Langley hopes to reach a point where she can mount a challenge on next year's apprentice championship.
'It's never going to be a smooth ride but I feel I could put myself in the running,' she says.
The immediate priority is to show what she can do in Newcastle's most famous Flat race.
'I'll be excited going to bed Friday and waking up Saturday morning,' she admits. 'There will inevitably be a few nerves.
'It's great when someone thinks I can have the chance to prove I can ride well. It will be nice to be on the main stage on a Saturday on ITV. Hopefully it can open more doors.'

Lorraine Kelly 'left shaking like a leaf' after venture
The Glasgow-born star joined fellow presenter Dan Snow in a race up the 25-metre mast of the RSS Discovery in Dundee on Friday, with Snow reaching the top first by a few minutes. Lorraine Kelly said she was 'shaking like a leaf' as she scaled the mast of a historic ship that previously ventured to Antarctica, before abseiling to the ground. The feat aimed to emulate the working conditions the ship's original crew faced when it voyaged to Antarctica 124 years ago, albeit they endured harsh weather conditions and no modern safety precautions. Lorraine Kelly left 'shaking like a leaf' after venture (Image: Andrew Milligan/PA) Led by the Dundee Heritage Trust, the Discovery Mast Climb will be open for daring members of the public to experience in the autumn. After reaching the top, both TV stars waved for the cameras below. Snow spoke into the microphone of a camera drone above, with little-to-no fear in his voice. READ MORE: Lorraine Kelly at Glasgow restaurant on break from ITV show The Discovery Mast Climb is expected to draw attention from all over the world and is the only experience of its kind in Scotland. The Cutty Sark in London and the SS Great Britain in Bristol offer a similar challenge. After completing the climb, Kelly said: 'The experience in general was absolutely terrifying, and the only reason I think I got through it was because Dan Snow was doing it as well. 'He looked so calm as he was shimmying up the rigging. 'That made me feel a bit better, but I'm not good with heights, so it was scary. "I was shaking like a leaf, but it's really good to be back on dry land.' (Image: Andrew Milligan/PA) Kelly, a patron of the Dundee Heritage Trust alongside Snow, added: 'The Discovery ship is beautiful, she's the symbol of Dundee. I'm obsessed with all things Antarctica, and she went to Antarctica. 'She's an old girl, so she needs a lot of maintenance, and obviously that costs a lot of money. 'This was all about raising awareness of the Discovery and letting everyone in Dundee have a look at her.' She said the experience also highlighted Scotland's former ties to the whaling industry, which was abolished in Scotland in 1963. It's about looking back on the whaling industry, which was a big part of the city, and looking forward to the fact that we don't do that anymore – thank goodness – and we're trying to save these beautiful animals, so it's a celebration of the future.' Asked if she would consider such a climb again, Kelly joked: 'I don't think I'll ever do anything like that again. I'll leave that to the experts.'

Horse racing tips: ‘His rapid improvement shows no sign of stopping' – Templegate's 7-2 Saturday NAP
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) TEMPLEGATE takes on a busy Saturday of racing confident of bashing the bookies. Back a horse by clicking their odds below. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up PABORUS (2.25 York, nap) Has won four of his past five starts and can keep his excellent run of form going here. He signed off last season clocking a fast time while winning in good company on the Southwell sand. That was over this trip and he struck on comeback at Thirsk last time out in April. He went through the gears with the minimum of fuss there and could have won by a lot more than the official margin of two lengths. He takes a fair hike in class here but looks well up to it for trainer Ed Bethell who really put himself on the map with a couple of big wins at Royal Ascot last week. With William Buick in the saddle he will take a lot of beating even at Group 3 level. KIND OF BLUE (2.10 Newcastle, nb) We'll stick with Wathnan Racing and their speedster in the Chipchase Stakes. He's a proven Group 1 sprinter who needed the run after a long break in France last time. James Fanshawe's flyer looks a cut above these rivals. PAPPANO (3.15 Newcastle, treble) Has success on a Northumberland Plate! Jumps legend Willie Mullins is starting to make his mark on the level too and this former Gosden runner will relish this challenge in the big one at Newcastle. He stays and looks on a fair weight. Templegate's verdicts NEWCASTLE 1.40 ARAMRAM ran well in the Wokingham last week, finishing like a train after missing the kick. He's best over this trip and could have more to offer. He's gone well on the all-weather before. Pocklington goes well here and is best after a break so don't worry about his 311 days off. He looks solid each-way. Durham Castle is progressive and had a bit up his sleeve when going in at Windsor last time. This trip suits and he's another with tapeta form. Arctic Thunder came home strongly into second at Haydock on just his second run for Ed Walker and is another to note. 2.10 KIND OF BLUE is a proven Group 1 performer who should be much too good. He finished last season winning the Champions Sprint at Ascot and can be forgiven his comeback in France last time when missing the break by half a furlong. He doesn't usually do that and will be much smarter away today. Ferrous is a classy handicapper who deserves a crack at this level. He won well here last time and is best over today's trip. Fair Angellica took Listed honours at Salisbury when enjoying the drop to this distance and can hold her own again. Spycatcher is proven in this grade and is capable of hitting the frame wisely dropping back from seven furlongs. 2.40 CONTACTO went close at Goodwood last time on his first crack at this two-mile trip. He should come on for that first outing in nine months and he looks capable of better over extreme trips. Godsend was well backed for the Plate but didn't quite get in. He's a typical Sir Mark Prescott improver who made it four in a row at Nottingham last time. This is his toughest assignment yet from another 7lb higher but he'll be right there. Humble Spark has four Newcastle wins on his CV and stays well. He was far from disgraced in this grade at Haydock last time and looks a player. Savrola is consistent over slightly shorter trips and went close at Hamilton last time. He's got place claims. Gibside won over 2m2f at Chester last month and is another serious contender. 3.15 PAPPANO was useful on the level for the Gosdens and can take a step forward on this Flat debut for Irish genius Willie Mullins. He has gone well in Listed company and looks on a fair weight under Jamie Spencer who can time his run right. East India Dock hit traffic issues when running a cracker in the Ascot Stakes and the Chester Cup winner looks a real threat. Zanndabad is a proven stayer from the Tony Martin yard that has won this race before. He had a nice warm-up for this at The Curragh last time. Last year's winner Onesmoothoperator has a lot more weight this time but his liking for trip and track can take him into the frame. Who's Glen was a solid fifth to East India Dock at Chester and has place prospects. 3.45 NATIVE WARRIOR has some smart form over a mile and should enjoy Newcastle's straight over 7f which takes some getting. He's dropped close to the mark that saw him go close in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot last year and he was a solid second at Windsor 33 days ago. He can have a say in this wide-open contest. City Walk is interesting despite coming back from 540 days off. He won the Gosforth Park Cup sprint here but has stamina too and Saeed Bin Suroor should have him ready. Zip looks a big price considering he was a solid second over course and distance last time. The veteran could easily make the frame again. Eldrickjones was ahead of him here in May and has gone close in hot company twice since. He's another with an each-way say. Dosman is back from nine months off and looks on a fair mark with trainer Roger Varian in decent form. Telemark ran better than seventh suggests at York last time and likes this trip. YORK 1.55 ARCHIVIST relished this decent ground when scooting in by more than four lengths at Leicester earlier this month. That was just his second run for William Haggas and he can improve on this handicap debut over an ideal distance. Cadarn is going the right way and landed back-to-back wins at Redcar before a little break. He showed good pace on the front end last time and relishes this trip. He looks a big danger under William Buick. Madame De Sevigne may just be better over seven furlongs but was just edged out over this mile at Nottingham and can't be written off. Barley may not have been entirely at home on soft ground in the Carlisle Bell on Wednesday after two decent runs on quicker going. Shamrock Bay has few miles on the clock and has place claims for the Kublers despite going up in class. 2.25 PABORUS is improving with every run and had plenty in hand at Thirsk last time out in April. That was his first run in six months and he's had another little break since. This seven-furlong trip on fast ground is ideal and he looked well up to Group 3 standard last time. William Buick can land a rare win in the Wathnan Racing colours for trainer Ed Bethell who is having a big season. Lethal Levi was just collared on the line in a Curragh Group 2 last time and has some hot handicaps on his CV. The slight worry is the extra furlong he tackles today but he'll take some pegging back from the front. Formal deserves this hike in grade after taking a Listed prize at Epsom's Derby meeting. She goes on any ground and gets a big weight allowance as a three-year-old filly. Lake Forest was a good fifth in the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot 11 days ago. He tried to come from a long way back there and this drop in grade will definitely boost his chances. 3.00 JM JUNGLE has a formidable record at York and comes here on the back of winning the red-hot Dash at Epsom last time. He's up 5lb for that but is in excellent form and should be well drawn in stall four. He can be relied on to go close again. Habooba went from the front when winning here last month ahead of the tip and the form has been franked. A 6lb rise may not stop him from following up. Regal Envoy has a brilliant strike-rate for a sprinter and made it five wins from his past six runs at Windsor 19 days ago. This trip is ideal on any ground and he's in the mix under Oisin Murphy. Azure Angel clocked a personal best when scoring at Redcar last time. She had the best of the draw but beat the track record so it was still a good effort. Squealer has been knocking on the door and was touched off at Doncaster three Saturdays ago. A 3lb rise is fair and he likes quick ground. Love Island fans divided as two Islanders axed including 'winner'
Megan Forte Clarke and Remell Mullins were asked to leave the Island tonight after viewers voted for their favourite stars and they came in at the bottom of the list Love Island viewers have been left divided after a dramatic elimination saw two islanders dumped from the villa tonight (June 27), including one half of a couple previously tipped to win the entire series. The public have been voting for their favourite Islanders, and after the results came in, Megan Forte Clarke and Remell Mullins were revealed to be the public's least liked girl and boy in the villa. This meant they were asked to leave the island in the most recent instalment of the ITV reality show. Remell has been tipped to leave Love Island early ever since he stepped out on viewer favourite Alima, but Megan's exit comes as a surprise as only days ago viewers were predicting that she and her partner Tommy Bradley were frontrunners to win the entire series. Bookies indicated they were in the lead, with Betfred offering Megan at 15/8 and Unibet putting Tommy at 7/4 to take the Love Island prize home just last Wednesday (June 18). Fans also thought Megan was destined to be at the Love Island finale with Tommy by her side, as one previously tweeted: "I know Tommy and Megan are on the clear road to win Love Island UK but we actually can't let that happen." Fans have reacted to her exit, with one poking fun at her sudden fall from grace, saying: "Megan really quickly went from Hero to Zero." Another agreed: "Megan deffo had a chance at winning the show if she just stuck with Tommy." Someone else was delighted to see her booted out as a consequence for her actions, and shared: "Megan has been dumped? Thank God. What she did to Tommy was awful." Before she was voted out, Megan's love story took a dramatic turn this week. After being coupled up with Tommy since day one, the 24-year-old Irish beauty sparked outrage among viewers when she shared a secret kiss with fellow Irish islander Conor Phillips while Conor's partner Emily was away from the villa. After Emily returned, she confronted Conor about his betrayal in the Snug. She seemed particularly surprised that Megan had agreed to lock lips with him, saying: "That's quite intense… I thought Megan was more into Tommy to the point where she wouldn't have done that." Later that evening, Conor dropped another bombshell by telling Emily that he would be spending the night with Megan in the Hideaway. In the private bedroom the pair had another smooch, and Conor even gifted Megan his bracelet. Fans were left furious after both Conor and Megan hurt the feelings of the people they were coupled up with. One took to social media to say: "Conor didn't care one bit about dumping Emily. She basically did it without him asking." Another viewer fumed: "OMG not Megan and Conor going to the hideaway MINUTES after dumping Emily and Tommy." Poor Tommy was heartbroken to have lost Megan after going steady with her since the start of the show, and opened up to his friends Harry and Ben, admitting he just wanted to "sit in a quiet corner". Before going into the Hideaway with Conor Megan pulled Tommy for a chat, coldly telling him: "It's nothing against you, but I'm here to explore connections. I didn't have to come and tell you this but I do like you, so I am telling you."
