Four people miraculously survived after their small plane crash-landed in Montana on Monday — triggering a massive fire that sent huge plumes of smoke billowing into the sky.

The Socata TBM 700 turboprop jet crashed onto the runway and then collided with several other parked aircraft — causing multiple planes to burst into flames, Kalispell Fire Chief Jay Hagen said.
Video from the scene showed the fire engulfing a grassy area before it could be extinguished.
Thick black smoke also blanketed the small, city-owned airport in the aftermath.
The three passengers on the crashed plane somehow managed to escape on their own when it finally came to a stop, Hagen said.

'It sounded like if you were to stick your head in a bass drum and somebody smacked it as hard as they could,' witness Ron Danielson said.
The flight was en route from Pullman, Washington when the fiery saga unfolded.

A Reuters journalist aboard the Philippine Coast Guard flight watched as the Chinese fighter closed in on the small Cessna Caravan turboprop. At one point the Chinese fighter came within about 200 feet (61 metres) as it manoeuvred behind, above, and alongside the plane, PCG spokesperson Jay Tarriela said. It was the latest sign of the persistent tensions between the two nations in the disputed South China Sea atoll. "While they were conducting the flight, they have been intercepted by a Chinese fighter jet," Tarriela told a press conference held afterwards. The encounter lasted 20 minutes, during which radio demands from one of two Chinese navy ships spotted below ordering the Philippine plane to "leave immediately" could be heard from the cockpit. The same day, two U.S. warships - littoral combat ship USS Cincinnati and the destroyer USS Higgins - were spotted about 30 nautical miles away from the shoal, Tarriela said. China's military claimed it "drove away" the U.S. destroyer after it entered the area without permission, but Washington said its ships were conducting lawful freedom of navigation operations. Located 200 km (124 miles) off the Philippines and inside its exclusive economic zone, Scarborough Shoal is valued for its rich fishing grounds and sheltered lagoon. On Monday, the PCG sent three vessels to carry supplies to dozens of Filipino fishermen in the atoll. It said Chinese vessels then intervened to carry out what it called a "hazardous" attempt to prevent the delivery, leading to the first known collision between two Chinese ships in the area. China has not confirmed if any crew were injured, and ignored Manila's offer of medical and rescue aid. Neither China's defence ministry nor its embassy in Manila has commented on the incident. On Monday, China's coast guard said it took necessary measures to expel Philippine vessels from waters around the shoal. The United States also condemned Beijing's "reckless" actions. China claims almost the entire South China Sea via a U-shaped "nine-dash line," a claim invalidated by a 2016 arbitration ruling that also found China's blockade of the Scarborough shoal unlawful. Sovereignty over the shoal remains unresolved, but China, which rejects the ruling, has maintained a constant presence at the reef since seizing it in 2012, deploying coastguard vessels and "maritime militia". A small jet crashed into multiple planes while attempting to land at a Montana airport on Monday, Aug. 11. Officials in Kalispell, a town about three hours north of Helena, said authorities responded to the scene of a plane crash at Kalispell City Airport around 2:08 p.m. on Aug. 11. The pilot of the jet, a Socata TBM 700, which had four people aboard, lost control of the aircraft and crashed onto the runway, striking several parked airplanes and igniting fires on numerous aircraft. The four jet occupants, who are from out of state, managed to exit the plane with minor injuries and were treated at the scene. One of the planes struck by the jet was an unoccupied Swearingen SX-300. No additional injuries have been reported, authorities said. 'Police officers and fire crews acted quickly to contain and extinguish the blaze, preventing further damage,' Kalispell City Government said in a written statement. The Federal Aviation Administration is leading an investigation into the crash. Footage of the incident showed large clouds of smoke and flames billowing from the airport after the plane hit the tarmac. The airport primarily doesn't handle scheduled commercial flights and is located close to Glacier National Park, a wilderness area in Montana's Rocky Mountains. Montana U.S. Rep. Ryan Zinke wrote in an X post on Aug. 11: "My staff is on site at the plane crash at the Kalispell City Airport. From what we understand, no one was injured, praise God. "We will be assisting local authorities and the airport in any way we can as they handle this unfortunate accident," the post continued. Two injured after small plane crashes near tarmac in Montana creating large fireball
A small plane carrying four people crashed into a parked aircraft on Monday afternoon while landing at a northwest Montana airport, setting fire to parts of the runway in the city of Kalispell. All four passengers were able to walk away from the crash once the plane came to a halt, with two being treated for minor injuries at the scene, Kalispell Fire Chief Jay Hagen told local reporters. The plane crashed onto the runway around 2 p.m. and skid 'like a Frisbee' into a parked plane then burst into flames, Hagen said. The fire temporarily spread to a grassy part of the city-owned airport. Agencies including Kalispell police and fire, and the Evergreen, Smith, and Whitefish fire departments all responded to the crash. Officials have cordoned off part of the runway, and the Federal Aviation Administration plans to investigate the crash. The plane involved was a single-engine, Socata TBM 700 turboprop, owned by Meter Sky LLC of Pullman, Washington, according to FAA records obtained by The Associated Press. The Independent has contacted the company for comment. Aviation safety consultant Jeff Guzzetti told the outlet such crashes between landing and parked aircraft occur a few times a year in general aviation. Kalispell is a city of around 30,000 people, located about 33 miles southwest of Glacier National Park.
