Montreal captain Marie-Philip Poulin wins PWHL's Billie Jean King MVP award
Poulin, who was also named forward of the year, was presented the awards at a ceremony Wednesday in Ottawa.
The 34-year-old Poulin led the league with 19 goals and finished fourth with 26 points in 30 games.
Poulin was also a finalist for the MVP and top forward awards in the inaugural 2024 PWHL season. Both awards were won by Toronto's Natalie Spooner.
The awards capped another year of major achievements for Poulin, who was named the IIHF's Female Player of the Year earlier this month after taking MVP honors at the women's world championship in April with a tournament-leading 12 points (four goals, eight assists).
Toronto Sceptres defender Renata Fast and Boston Fleet captain Hilary Knight (now with Seattle) were the other MVP finalists, while Knight and New York Sirens forward Sarah Fillier were up for forward of the year.
Fast and Fillier did not leave empty-handed. Fast took home defender of the year honors while Fillier was named the league's top rookie.
The 30-year-old Fast tied for first in scoring among defenders with 22 points in 30 games, led the league with 63 hits and led all skaters with an average of 24 minutes, 39 seconds of ice time per game.
Sophie Jaques and Claire Thompson of the PWHL champion Minnesota Frost (both now with Vancouver) were the other finalists.
Fillier, 25, tied for the league lead with 29 points in 30 games and led the league with five power-play goals.
Montreal forward Jenn Gardiner (now with Vancouver) and Ottawa goaltender Gwyneth Philips also were finalists.
Montreal's Ann-Renée Desbiens took goaltender of the year honors. The 31-year-old led all goalies with 15 wins and her 1.86 goals-against average and .932 save percentage were top marks among all starters.
Philips and Boston's Aerin Frankel also were finalists.
Montreal's Kori Cheverie won coach of the year after leading the Victoire to first place in the PWHL standings with a 12-7-3-8 record. Ottawa's Carla MacLeod and Toronto's Troy Ryan, who won the award last year, were also in the running.
Victoire forward Laura Stacey won the Hockey For All Award given to the player 'who made the greatest impact in their community.'
Poulin, Fillier, Knight, Fast, Jaques and Desbiens were named to the league's first all-star team.
Minnesota's Kendall Coyne Schofield, Ottawa's Tereza Vanisova (now Vancouver), Toronto's Daryl Watts, New York's Ella Shelton (now Toronto), Thompson and Frankel were named to the second all-star team.
Fillier, Gardiner, Minnesota's Britta Curl-Salemme, Montreal's Cayla Barnes and Anna Wilgren (both now with Seattle) and Philips made up the all-rookie squad.

'It's just crazy': Nelly Korda's stats say she's playing better in 2025, yet she's winless
Even Nelly Korda can't believe what the numbers say. The LPGA has a remarkable 22 different winners in 21 events, and Korda isn't among them. And yet, she's playing some of the best golf on tour. "Statistically I saw my stats, and seeing that I'm always in the top and some of my stats are maybe better than even last year, it's just crazy," said Korda. "That's just golf. By this time last year I had six wins under my belt and my stats are better, and I have zero wins under my belt this year. I think the most important thing is kind of sticking to your process, always trying to be in contention coming into the weekend, and kind of figuring out your groove, too." Korda tees it up this week at the CPKC Women's Open at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club as No. 2 in the world after Jeeno Thitikul overtook her earlier this month. Korda had spent the past 17 months on top, winning seven times in 2024. Korda's scoring average through 13 starts in 2024 was 70.04; to date this year, it's 69.87, which ranks second on tour. The KPMG Performance Insights show that many of Korda's strokes gained numbers are also better this year, including strokes gained putting. She has five top-10 finishes without a win, trailing only Ariya Jutanugarn and Hye Jin Choi in the category with six. Her best finish of 2025 so far is a runner-up at the U.S. Women's Open at Erin Hills, though she has only one top-10 finish over her last five starts. Now a 15-time winner on the LPGA, Korda insists she doesn't think much about her world ranking, she simply wants to contend more. When asked if she's frustrated by what the stats say, Korda said it's more confusing than anything. "Yeah, it's always like just a little bit of like a question, like how? How am I up there?" she said. "But it also is like in a sense motivating, too, knowing that I am putting in all the work and playing well. Everything just hasn't clicked. For you to win out here or to win in general, it's so hard; everything has to click. Bounces have to go your way. Everything just has to click. "Unfortunately it just hasn't. But never say never. I mean, we still a bunch of events left in the season. Doesn't matter how you start, it's how you finish, so we'll see." Thitikul makes her first appearance at the CPKC since 2022. The smiley Thai player with the ultra consistent game leads the tour in scoring with a 69.51 average. She's first in strokes gained total, top-10 finishes (8) and rounds in the 60s at 56 percent. Both Thitikul and Korda come into Ontario off a two-week break. "You know, as I was young, I don't think I'm going reach No. 1 in the world for sure," said a modest Thitikul. "I think just be able to win a tournament in LPGA is really good enough for me. But like ranking No. 1 in the world, it's more than I can describe." Why Celtics legend Paul Pierce believes Jayson Tatum will come back strong from injury
The road to recovery could be a long one for Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum. However, another Celtics great, 10-time All-Star Paul Pierce, believes that Tatum is up for the challenge and fully capable of returning to full strength. Late in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the New York Knicks, Tatum suffered an Achilles tear that ruled him out for the rest of the series. And although the Celtics haven't officially shut him down for the 2025-26 season, it doesn't seem likely that he'll see the court over the next several months. Yet, none of that shook Pierce's confidence, as the 2008 NBA Finals MVP shared his thoughts on Tatum's rehab process with New England Patriots Hall of Famer Julian Edelman on the "Games With Names" podcast. "Usually an Achilles injury will take you a whole year to get back to work," Pierce told the former wide receiver. "After a whole year, you start getting back. I mean, we got cases of it — Paul George, (Kevin Durant) — they looked good after they came back from an Achilles (injury). So I'm not worried about him getting back to where he was before he got hurt." Despite Philadelphia 76ers star Paul George and Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant both suffering brutal injuries in their primes, both future Hall of Famers remain in the league. Plus, Durant was over 30 years old when he tore his Achilles and still managed to get back to his old self. Tatum hasn't even turned 28, which bodes well for his injury maintenance. Regardless of age, recovering from an Achilles injury is a grueling ordeal that requires daily work. But, if Tatum has shown anything during his impressive career, it's that he's willing to do whatever it takes to play the game he loves. View more Video Transcript What does the fox say, Joe Burrow or the field for MVP? Yeah, the fox says the field, right? Especially at those odds. Uh, I just wrote a newser at Yahoo Sports yesterday. The public loves Joe Burrow. They are betting him hand over fist to win MVP. Uh, right now he is tied for the second choice at 600 with Josh Allen. Lamar Jackson is the favorite at plus 550 at Bet MGM, but Burrow has the most bets around. Uh, 16%, and the most money around 24% of total dollars wagered, and that's at Bet MGM. But at multiple sportsbooks, uh, that I checked in with, Burrow is number one in tickets and number one in handles. So, the public is definitely liking Joe Burrow, as we discussed, a lot of that I think is a combination of probably a really bad defense, not that difficult to schedule. And also Burrow just being a really good quarterback, putting up big numbers, obviously having Ja'Marr Chase and T. Higgins. We expect that offense to be good. The big questions are obviously on defense, so you expect him to put up big numbers. He did that last year. They only went 9 and 8. So that's also a question. Uh, he was also third in QBR behind Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. So really good season last year. Can he do better this season? The big bets, though, on Lamar Jackson, two big bets out there, both $5,000 on Lamar Jackson, one at plus 550, one at 6 to 1. So that would win $275,000 and $300,000. So a lot of those big bets on Lamar Jackson. And I would be remiss to say as well if I didn't say that Washington Commanders quarterback Jahan Dotson is second most money and second most tickets at Bet MGM to win MVP. So, like we talked about, he had a historic rookie season. Betters think he could be in for even more in his sophomore season. Close
