Roma has 2 coaches in charge with Ranieri advising Gasperini
ROME (AP) — Claudio Ranieri turned down Italy to stay at Roma. Gian Piero Gasperini chose the capital club over Juventus and left Atalanta after transforming the Bergamo team into a top contender in Italy and Europe.
The two white-haired coaches sat side by side on the stage during Gasperini's presentation as Roma's new coach on Tuesday.
The 73-year-old Ranieri is moving into an advisory role after coaching Roma out of a crisis. The 67-year-old Gasperini is looking to crown his career by making an impact in one of Italy's biggest markets for the first time.
Gasperini acknowledged that he was approached by Juventus — his hometown club and the team that he spent his youth career with as a player.
'Yes. But I had a feeling that this was the right path, despite all the risks I keep being reminded about,' Gasperini said, alluding to the pressures of coaching a perennially underperforming club in the country's biggest city. 'Considering my style of soccer, I feel I can make an impact. It's an ideal situation. It's what I'm looking for right now. I strongly believe that I made the right choice.'
The only other time Gasperini coached a big Italian club came in 2011 when he lasted just five winless matches at Inter Milan.
But Ranieri said that Gasperini, who signed a three-year contract, could turn to him for help whenever trouble arises.
'My relationship will be like that of a friend,' Ranieri said. 'If he needs something, I will try to resolve it. That's my job now.'
Gasperini is Roma's fourth coach in the 1½ years since Jose Mourinho was fired, following Daniele De Rossi, Ivan Juric and Ranieri.
Roma is Ranieri's priority
Ranieri was hired in November when Roma was struggling in 12th place. He guided the team to a fifth-place finish as the Giallorossi lost just once during the second half of the season.
Then when Italy coach Luciano Spalletti was fired less than 10 days ago amid the prospect that the four-time champion could fail to qualify for the World Cup for a third straight time, the Italian soccer federation asked Ranieri to take over.
Ranieri said no to the Italy job.
'I respect Italy but I'm with Roma,' the Roman-born Ranieri said when asked to explain what exactly happened.
Gennaro Gattuso was hired to coach Italy instead.
Gasperini's teams pile up goals
Gasperini's Atalanta teams have been among the highest-scoring squads in Italy for years and strikers like Diego Milito (at Genoa), Duvan Zapata, Gianluca Scamacca and Mateo Retegui have all had explosive seasons under the manager.
Does that mean that Roma strikers Artem Dovbyk and Tammy Abraham are set for career-defining campaigns?
'My teams have always scored a lot of goals,' Gasperini said. 'That's my style and I certainly want to try that again here with Roma.'
Roma's prized but often injured playmaker Paulo Dybala once played under Gasperini at Palermo.
'I hope I don't change anything with Dybala, as good as he is,' Gasperini said. 'I just hope that he stays in good health and in good condition.'
Gasperini's advice for Italian soccer
Gasperini said it was disappointing for Italian soccer that the only European trophies won by Serie A clubs in the last 15 years were the Europa League trophy that he guided Atalanta to last year and the Conference League for Roma in 2022.
The last Italian team to win the Champions League was Inter Milan in 2010. The Nerazzurri were embarrassingly beaten 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in last month's final.
'You need to play with a fast pace, because when you go abroad they play fast,' Gasperini said. 'Maybe we need to start looking at things a little differently. Because that's what works and that's the path we need to follow.'
Roma will play in the Europa League next season.

Farrell vows to 'love every minute' of Sarries return
Owen Farrell won six Premiership titles in a glittering 16-year career before moving to Racing 92 in France last year [Getty Images] Owen Farrell says he wants to get back to "loving every minute" of rugby with Saracens after returning to the club following a "difficult year" playing in France. The 33-year-old former Sarries captain said his remaining years were "more and more precious", having made just 17 appearances in his one season with Racing 92. Advertisement Farrell completed his return to the club where he spent 16 glittering seasons and became England skipper, on Monday. "I feel it's best. I've had a difficult enough year and these years now are getting more and more precious and I'm determined now to make the most of everything that is to come," he told BBC Radio 5 Live. "I think for everyone and for me this is the best place to do it." Farrell began his professional career with Saracens in 2008 and has made 256 appearances for the north London club. Alongside fellow England stalwarts Maro Itoje, Jamie George and Mako and Billy Vunipola, Farrell was part of a dominant Sarries team that won six Premiership titles and three European Champions Cups, including the double in 2016 and 2019. Advertisement "I want to get back here at Saracens and I want to get back to loving every minute of it. I want to get myself into a really good place and I think that's the starting point for me," he said. 'No regrets' over Racing move Farrell made 17 appearances in all competitions for Racing but was dogged by a persistent hip problem before his season was ended by a concussion [Getty Images] During his time playing at StoneX Stadium, Farrell became a mainstay in the England national side and was named captain in 2018. In total he has earned 112 international caps, winning three Six Nations Championships and leading the side to the World Cup final in 2019. Four years later, he captained the side to a third-placed finish in Paris before announcing he would step back from international duty for mental health reasons. Advertisement Racing finished 10th in the French top flight during his one injury-hit season with them, before the club agreed to end his contract a year early. "I'd have liked to have played more. I'd have liked to have felt more like myself at times while I was out there but I'm really glad for the experience," he said. "I've got no regrets as far as going to experience that. Just as far as everything that's gone on, as I said I feel like the years are precious now and this would be the best place to carry on." England return 'hypothetical' Farrell's final appearance for England was the 2023 World Cup bronze medal match victory over Argentina [Getty Images] By returning to the Premiership, Farrell is once again available for England selection. Advertisement Steve Borthwick's side travel to Argentina for a three-Test tour next month, while the British and Irish Lions, led by Farrell's father Andy, begin their tour of Australia against Argentina on Friday. He described a return for either side as "hypothetical". "I've known Steve for a very long time and it's great to see how England have been doing over the Six Nations and hopefully they'll really kick on in Argentina, which I'm sure they will," Farrell said. "It's all very hypothetical and at the moment my only goal is to get back here [at Saracens] and get myself in the best place to perform."

🔥 Flu face BVB in toughest debut for Brazilian sides at 2025 Club World Cup
🔥 Flu face BVB in toughest debut for Brazilian sides at 2025 Club World Cup The 2025 Club World Cup is taking shape, and this Tuesday it's Fluminense's turn to debut in the competition. The Tricolor faces Borussia Dortmund at 1 PM (Brasília time) in New Jersey - facing the strongest opponent in the group right from the start. Advertisement The match is decisive for the Brazilian team's aspirations. A victory could pave the way for qualification to the round of 16. You can sign up for DAZN to watch all the FIFA Club World Cup matches for free. This is because the other teams in the group are more "modest." Ulsan HD from South Korea and Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa complete Group F. Palmeiras also faced a traditional European team in their debut, Porto. But the Portuguese team is not in a very good moment. Meanwhile, Botafogo faced Seattle from the United States, and Flamengo faced Esperance from Tunisia - both teams with few aspirations in the World Cup. Fluminense arrives confident and with changes Renato Gaúcho's team arrives well-prepared: six matches without losing, with four consecutive victories, sixth place in the Brasileirão, and secured qualifications in the Copa Sudamericana and the Copa do Brasil. Advertisement The tendency is for Renato to continue with the trio of defensive midfielders, with Ganso and Cano on the bench. Arias remains the team's main technical reference. The controversy in the preparation was due to the signing of Soteldo - who was diagnosed with an injury and will be absent at least in the group stage of the World Cup. Dortmund comes from a strong finish and has a powerful attack On the other side, Borussia Dortmund arrives as the favorite for the top spot in the group. The German team fluctuated during the season but finished strong, achieving a fourth place in the Bundesliga that seemed unlikely months before. Advertisement The main name is Serhou Guirassy, who scored 40 goals last season and is BVB's great hope for goals. And as a novelty, there's the young Jobe Bellingham, Jude's brother, recently signed from Sunderland to strengthen the midfield. Fluminense can take advantage of the fact that the German team is coming off a tiring end to the season. This article was translated into English by Artificial Intelligence. Gloucester sign All Blacks prop Laulala
Gloucester have signed New Zealand prop Nepo Laulala for the 2025-26 Premiership season. The 33-year-old has been rehabilitating from a ruptured Achilles tendon at Kingsholm after being released by French side Toulouse last season. Advertisement Laulala has won 53 caps for the All Blacks and featured at the last two World Cups - playing in New Zealand's loss to South Africa in the 2023 final. "Nepo is a 50-odd cap All Black, and that pretty much speaks for itself in terms of the calibre of player we've signed," Gloucester director of rugby George Skivington told the club website. "We moved quickly to get him here in the building and start his rehab, which gave us a jump on the other sides and most importantly, Nepo has been really grateful for how we've supported him with his injury. "He's looking really good, he's coming through all the tests that we've been putting him through, and we're confident he can have a big impact for us this season." Advertisement Laulala came up through the ranks at Canterbury and made his Super Rugby debut for the Crusaders before stints with the Chiefs and the Blues. Following the 2023 World Cup, he moved to Toulouse, but his time in the Top 14 was cut short due to his injury. He has spent the last three months at Gloucester regaining fitness. "I'm really grateful to George and everybody at Gloucester for welcoming me to Kingsholm after going through a pretty rough time in France," Laulala said. "It was a scary time not knowing where my future lay, but I'm looking forward to repaying everybody here for the faith they've put in me. Advertisement "I've heard great things about Gloucester and the Cherry and White fans, and I can't wait to get out there and play in front of them."
