Oman U19s head to Nepal for high-stakes ICC CWC Asia Qualifier
Oman begin their campaign against Afghanistan in the tournament opener on April 13 at the Mulpani International Cricket Ground.
Hosts Nepal, UAE, Hong Kong, Afghanistan and Oman will compete across both the Upper and Lower Mulpani grounds, with all matches starting at 9:30am local time.
The squad, led by Rahil Habibulla, features six new faces — Rishab Gupta, Ojjus Pachisia, Ayush Karthyic, Kavish Shah, Vignesh Karthikeyan and Aryan Joshi — as the team looks to strike a balance with talent and experience.
While Oman earned their place in the Asia Qualifier by winning Division 2 last year, head coach Damith Warusavithana is realistic about the challenge ahead. Ahead of the departure, he said: 'We go in as underdogs, as Afghanistan and Nepal are the front-runners. But we are looking to compete and make sure to give our 100 per cent and stand up to the best of our abilities.'
The head coach said the squad has undergone a thorough build-up phase, including over a dozen competitive matches and scenario-based training sessions designed to prepare players for high-pressure moments. 'The preparation in lead-up to the tournament was apt. We had a pool of 30 quality players, out of which the squad of 14 was selected,' he said.
'The training was more focused on scenarios which players were groomed to execute at different stages in matches.'
Warusavithana praised the team's commitment during a demanding period. 'The dedication from the group was commendable. The preparation was amid the February–March months with exams on, but the boys have balanced cricket and studies exceptionally and as thorough professionals.'
With the conditions in Nepal expected to be unfamiliar, Oman boys arrived early to acclimatise. 'We've concentrated on the physical, mental, and skill level of the players and are going a few days early to adapt well to the behaviour of the pitches,' Warusavithana added.
'Lastly, I thank the Oman Cricket Board and our support staff for their untiring efforts, which enabled us to prepare seamlessly for this important tournament.'
Earlier last week, Tanzania became the 12th team to confirm their place at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2026 in Zimbabwe and Namibia after winning the Africa Qualifier. Tanzania will now be among the 16 teams competing at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2026 in Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Ten teams have automatically qualified for the event as the best-placed Full Member nations from the previous event in 2024. These are: Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies. Full Member hosts of the 2026 edition Zimbabwe have also secured automatic qualification.
Tanzania have now taken one of five spots determined through regional qualification pathways, with one team from each region securing a place at the event.
Africa, Asia, Europe and East Asia-Pacific each have a two-step qualification process. Division 2 Qualifiers took place in 2024 to determine the teams that will be competing at the second and final stage, the Regional Qualifiers in 2025. The winning team from each Regional Qualifier in 2025 will qualify to compete at the ICC U19 Men's Cricket World Cup 2026. The qualification pathway in the Americas region will only include a Regional Qualifier and similarly, only the winning nation will secure a World Cup berth.

Oman to host first Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy in October
MUSCAT: Oman is preparing to host the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy from October 24–26, marking another step that reflects the high level of trust it enjoys from continental federations. During a press conference held by the organising committee on Wednesday, the technical and organisational details of the event were revealed, along with the opportunities it brings to promote Omani sport and expand the fan base of this relatively new game in the Sultanate of Oman. Nabil al Busaidy, Chairman of the Oman Rugby Committee, confirmed that this is the first time Oman will host a sanctioned international rugby tournament. He noted that hosting the event is a major achievement that places the Sultanate of Oman on the global rugby map. He added that the main goal is to present Oman to the world through this event, while also giving local players the chance to showcase their talents against continental teams. Al Busaidy pointed out that the presence of integrated sports facilities, such as the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in the Wilayat of Bausher and the ROP Stadium, was a key factor in earning the trust of the Asian Rugby Federation. He stressed that preparations over the past months have covered stadiums, accommodations and facilities. He further explained that the tournament will feature 20 Asian teams, with the possibility of increasing the number in the coming days. In the men's category, Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Syria have confirmed participation, alongside hosts Oman. He emphasised that facing strong Asian teams is a golden opportunity for players to gain technical experience, improve fitness and adapt to diverse styles of play, which will accelerate the team's development and prepare it for larger competitions such as the Olympics and Rugby World Cup tournaments. Al Busaidy also confirmed that the Oman Rugby Committee is working to spread the culture of the game within society, particularly among school students, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, which will allow students to attend matches for free. He also mentioned a long-term plan to train local coaches and referees in cooperation with the Asian Rugby Federation, in addition to exchanging expertise with continental and international federations. Kagiso Rabada ruled out of ODI series against Australia due to ankle injury
Cairns: South Africa right-arm seamer Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out to the three-match ODI series after suffering an ankle injury. The ODI series will run from August 19 to 24. Rabada has been diagnosed with inflammation in his right ankle, with scans on Monday confirming the injury, as per the ICC. The injury will keep Rabada sidelined for the three-match ODI series against the Aussies that commences in Cairns on Tuesday, with the Proteas confirming the star quick will remain in Australia for rehabilitation. "Proteas Men's fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against Australia due to inflammation of his right ankle. The 30-year-old underwent a scan on Monday, which confirmed the extent of the injury," South Africa said via a statement. "He will remain in Australia and undergo rehabilitation under the supervision of the Proteas medical staff. The series gets underway with the first ODI on Tuesday, 19 August at Cazalys Stadium, starting at 14:30 local time," the statement added. Speaking of the first ODI between Australia and South Africa, which is being played at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns on Tuesday, the Men in Yellow skipper, Mitchell Marsh, won the toss and elected to bowl first. ICC Level 1 Basic Umpiring Course Successfully Concluded in Oman
Muscat: The ICC Level 1 Basic Umpiring Course was successfully conducted at the Oman Cricket Academy in Al Amerat from 6–10 August 2025. The program was led by ICC educators, Mr. Rahul Asher and Mr. Vinod Babu, and saw an encouraging participation of 31 aspiring umpires, including four female participants, reflecting the growing interest in cricket officiating across Oman. The five-day training focused on the fundamental Laws of Cricket, ensuring participants gained a strong foundation in the principles of umpiring. Through a combination of classroom sessions, interactive discussions, and practical assessments, attendees were introduced to best practices that will enable them to officiate matches at the grassroots and domestic level. Oman Cricket has been committed to building capacity in all areas of the game, and this initiative highlights the board's efforts to enhance the standard of umpiring and to provide opportunities for participation in cricket. The successful completion of the course marks another important step in strengthening Oman's cricketing ecosystem and preparing a new qualified umpires to support the continued growth of the game in the Sultanate.
