Mexico demands explanation on U.S. deal with Mexican drug trafficker

Mexico City, May 30 (UNI) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday questioned the U.S. government for striking plea deals with Damaso Lopez Serrano, a member of a cartel the United States itself has labelled as "Foreign Terrorist Organisation."
At a daily morning press conference, Sheinbaum spoke of the apparent contradiction and demanded an explanation.
"The United States government recently issued a decree calling some organised crime organisations terrorists. They have said on several occasions that they do not negotiate with these organisations," she said. "They need to explain why agreements are reached in these cases."
U.S. authorities has reached a plea agreement with Damaso Lopez Serrano, alias "El Mini Lic," who pleaded guilty in a U.S. court to drug trafficking charges. He is considered a former high-ranking figure within the Sinaloa Cartel, according to Mexican media.
In February, the United States has designated Sinaloa Cartel, along with several other international cartels and transnational organisations, as "Foreign Terrorist Organisations" and "Specially Designated Global Terrorists."
Lopez Serrano was arrested in 2017 on charges of trafficking cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin. He was arrested again last year, pleading guilty to new drug trafficking-related charges.

Russia to continue military campaign in Ukraine until resolution of core causes

Moscow, May 31 (UNI) Russia will not halt its military campaign in Ukraine until the underlying causes of the conflict are resolved and peace agreements are formally ratified, senior Russian officials have said. Andrey Kartapolov, chairman of the Russian State Duma's Defence Committee, ruled out any unconditional ceasefire, stating that Moscow would continue its assault unless things are not 'put into writing'. 'We will not agree to a ceasefire just for the sake of it,' he said on the country's federal TV agency Channel One, according to Russian-state-media-TASS. 'Only if everything is put in writing, passed into law, ratified by parliaments, and becomes part of a genuine, lasting agreement—only then can peace be considered. Until then, the special military operation will continue.' Stating that the Kremlin won't be deterred by any "false assurances", he referenced the West's 'empty promises' to Moscow in prior negotiations, and said Russia would not be 'deceived again by golden illusions". At the United Nations, Russia's ambassador Vassily Nebenzia echoed the same stance, stating that Moscow is willing to consider a ceasefire 'in principle", but only if Kyiv takes tangible steps toward a long-term settlement. 'A simple ceasefire is not enough,' he told the UN Security Council, reports Sputnik. 'We stood at this crossroads before with the Minsk agreements, which were consistently violated by Western-backed Ukraine.' Nebenzia added that Russia's military is capable of escalating operations if necessary. 'The Russian Armed Forces can continue and ramp up military operations for as long as it takes,' he said. Accusing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of deliberately prolonging the conflict to avoid facing democratic accountability and corruption allegations, Nebenzia said, 'Ending the war means elections, scrutiny, and questions about where the money went.' He also accused some 'warmongers' in Europe of stalling any peace talks, misleading the US and forcing them to stay engaged. 'European warmongers are determined to keep America in this,' he said. Kharge demands special Parliament session over CDS remarks made in Singapore

New Delhi, May 31 (UNI) Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday called for a special session of Parliament, alleging that recent remarks made by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) during an interview in Singapore, raise several important questions. Kharge said the "fog of war is clearing," and it's now evident that the Modi government has "misled the nation." On his social media handle X, Kharge said, "Our IAF pilots were risking their lives fighting the enemy. We have suffered some losses, but our pilots were safe. As per CDS's interview, "we made, remedy it, rectify it, and then implement it again after two days and flew all our jets again, targeting at long range". "We salute their resolute courage and bravery. However, a comprehensive strategic review is the need of the hour," Kharge said. He further demanded the constitution of an independent expert committee to conduct a comprehensive review of India's defence preparedness, similar to the Kargil Review Committee established after the 1999 Kargil conflict. Raising concerns over Trump's repeated assertions about brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, Kharge said, "US President Donald Trump has again repeated his claim about BROKERING a CEASEFIRE. This is a direct affront to the Shimla Agreement". Kharge said, "Instead of clarifying Mr Trump's repeated assertions, and the affidavit filed by US Secretary of Commerce in the United States Court of International Trade, PM Modi is on an election blitz, taking PERSONAL CREDIT for the valour of our Armed Forces, hiding behind their bravery and dodging the contours of the agreed CEASEFIRE, which the Foreign Secretary announced on 10th, after Mr Trump's tweet". While stating that 140 cr patriotic Indians deserve to know this, the Congress president again asked, "Is India and Pakistan now again hyphenated? What are the conditions of the CEASEFIRE agreement?
