Quit BN but don't join PN, says MCA division leader

MCA's grassroots have called for the party to withdraw from BN amid discontent over its role in the federal administration.
PETALING JAYA : An MCA division leader has backed calls for the party to quit Barisan Nasional, but objects to it joining the opposition Perikatan Nasional.
Sungai Petani MCA chief Cheng Joo Choi said joining PN would only lead to MCA being perceived as hopping between coalitions, which would further hamper support from Chinese voters, Sin Chew Daily reported.
Cheng said MCA must abandon old mindsets and models, and rebuild itself as an independent party in the opposition.
'MCA can no longer just blindly follow orders. We cannot keep working hard without any control over the political game.
'Last year, our division officially passed a resolution to withdraw from BN, but it was not adopted at the state convention. Today, we raise it again because the situation demands a decisive move more than ever before,' he was quoted as saying.
He said MCA has been constrained ever since BN joined the unity government, with the party given a vague role while Umno and Pakatan Harapan integrated their resources and fastened their grip on power.
Cheng said MCA cannot keep relying on political 'handouts', and that, without the trust of Chinese voters, the party would not be able to support any form of political partnership.
'If MCA can't even secure its own voter base, how can it talk about partnerships? Alliances are, at their core, mutual exchanges of interests.
'We need Malay votes, they need Chinese votes, but if we've lost the trust of the Chinese community, what's the point of the exchange?'
This meant that MCA must go back to being focussed on the needs of the Chinese community, he said.
Cheng pointed out that former MCA president Liow Tiong Lai and current deputy president Mah Hang Soon had poured a lot of resources into their election campaigns in 2022, but still failed to win their contests.
'This proves that without support from the Chinese community, everything is in vain,' he said.
There have been growing calls from MCA's grassroots for the party to withdraw from BN amid discontent over its role in the federal administration.
MCA's leadership has said its next course of action would be based on what the grassroots decide on in their annual general meetings (AGM) at the division level.
Last week, MCA president Wee Ka Siong said the party would wait for the AGM for its decision on its future in the unity government.

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The administrator of a Facebook page named Sabahan News Online has apologised to Sabah minister Arifin Arif for linking him to the case involving Zara Qairina Mahathir, who died last month. In a Facebook post, the admin said it retracted every statement it had made against Arifin related to the case, adding that the state science, technology and innovation minister was a 'victim of misunderstanding all this while'. It also apologised for linking Sabah governor Musa Aman to the case through Arifin, who is Musa's son-in-law. 'We wholeheartedly apologise and will make this post a point of reference for the public so that all parties would understand (that Arifin is not linked to the case in any way). 'Every effort and attempt to link the governor and others to the case was a mistake and we deeply regret doing so,' it said. It also expressed hope that this would alleviate the unhappiness of netizens with the page for making the allegations. Zara was found unconscious at 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her school's hostel in Papar, Sabah. She died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu the following day. Her body was exhumed on Aug 9 to allow for a post-mortem amid allegations of bullying. This morning, five teenage girls claimed trial in the children's court in Kota Kinabalu to uttering abusive words against the victim which could have caused her distress.

Ismail files reports over posts linking him to attack on Rafizi's son

Former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the contents of the Facebook postings were completely untrue and maliciously intended to damage his reputation and good name. PETALING JAYA : Former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has filed reports with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission over a Facebook page linking him to the attack on Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli's son. An aide filed a report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters on Aug 18 over two alleged defamatory articles implicating him in the incident and a scandal involving a private company. 'A report has also been filed with MCMC and Facebook so that immediate action can be taken against the page and its administrator or owner,' the former Umno vice-president said in a statement. Ismail said the contents of the postings were 'completely untrue and maliciously intended to damage my reputation and good name'. He urged the authorities to carry out a thorough investigation and take firm action against the owner or administrator of the Facebook page, as well as anyone spreading the postings concerned. 'I have also instructed my lawyers to take further legal action against those involved. 'I thank Rafizi for his explanation on the matter.' Rafizi's 12-year-old son was attacked at a shopping mall in Putrajaya last week. Rafizi said CCTV footage showed that two men, dressed in black with their faces fully covered by helmets, had followed his wife's car on a motorcycle. His son, who was dragged and stabbed with a syringe, was rushed to hospital for treatment and a check-up. The assailants escaped. The former economy minister said he suspected the attack was planned, and that his wife was likely observed by the assailants for a few days before the incident. He also believed it was a warning for him not to speak out on certain issues. Earlier today, Rafizi denied claims linking Ismail and former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin to the attack on his son. The former PKR deputy president said there were allegations a week before the attack that information was provided by a whistleblower about a money laundering case supposedly involving Ismail. He said there were also claims the information concerned projects linked to Khairy during his time in the health ministry.

Loss of interest main reason behind teachers' early retirement

Deputy education minister Wong Kah Woh said his ministry has outlined seven measures aimed at reducing teachers' workload. (Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : A total of 19,179 primary and secondary school teachers opted for early retirement between 2022 and May this year, with most citing a loss of interest in teaching. Deputy education minister Wong Kah Woh told the Dewan Rakyat that 5,306 teachers retired early in 2022, followed by 6,394 in 2023, 5,082 in 2024, and 2,397 as of May 2025. Wong said a loss of interest in teaching was cited by 67.44% of teachers in their applications for optional early retirement. This was followed by family problems (17.43%), health problems (7.69%), workload (5.37%) and personal problems (2.08%). He said the ministry conducts permanent teacher recruitment twice a year, while the Education Service Commission keeps its teacher application system open year-round to speed up recruitment and placement. He was responding to a question from Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN–Masjid Tanah) on the number of teachers who chose early retirement between 2022 and 2024, and the measures taken by the ministry to address teacher shortages. Wong said the ministry had outlined seven measures aimed at reducing teachers' workload, including scrapping low-impact school events and appointing members of the public as examination invigilators. He also said the ministry had introduced teaching assistants at schools with more than 1,500 students to help reduce teachers' administrative workload. Wong said 282 schools had been assigned two teaching assistants, with plans to expand the programme to other schools.
