Israeli army says it targeted 'Hezbollah military sites' in south and Bekaa
According to L'Orient-Le Jour's correspondent in the region, the Israeli strikes hit Mahmoudieh, near the Lebanese Army checkpoint at the Khardali Bridge, the outskirts of Aishieh, and the village of Jarmuq (Sour). In the Bekaa, L'Orient-Le Jour's correspondent reported that the bombings struck the Brital Heights (Baalbeck) and the surroundings of Nabi Sreij.
In a statement, the Israeli military saidf it launched a series of strikes on sites belonging to Hezbollah and targeted "explosive manufacturing sites" as well as an "underground site for the production and storage of strategic weapons." It also accused the party of trying to rebuild its infrastructure.
'The largest missile production site'
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the Israeli army had attacked "the largest site for the production of Hezbollah precision missiles in Lebanon," according to Haaretz.
"Any attempt by the organization to rebuild, reestablish, or threaten will be met with relentless force," he said. According to the statement, this site had been previously targeted.
"The Lebanese government is responsible for preventing any violation of the cease-fire agreement. We will not allow Hezbollah to threaten the residents of northern Israel," he added.
These strikes come as the international community continues to press for Hezbollah's disarmament. On Thursday, President Joseph Aoun once again called for exclusive control of arms "from today" by the army and Lebanese security forces, while urging Hezbollah's opponents to avoid "provocations."
Militarily weakened by its 13-month war with Israel, the party is conditioning any concessions regarding its weapons on clear guarantees concerning the intentions of Israel and the United States. The cease-fire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel, in effect since Nov. 27, calls for a full withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, where they still occupy five positions and conduct strikes nearly every day. On the Lebanese side, the agreement was to lead to the disarmament of Hezbollah, first south of the Litani River, then across the country, as mandated by U.N. Resolution 1701, which provided the framework for the truce deal — a provision the party rejects. Israeli attacks in Lebanon over the past eight months have killed at least 285, according to a L'Orient-Le Jour and United Nations count.

Israeli far-right minister confronts prominent Palestinian inmate
Israel's far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, published a video on Friday showing him confronting the most high-profile Palestinian detainee in Israeli custody in his prison cell. Marwan Barghouti, a leading member of the Palestinian Fatah party, has spent more than 20 years behind bars after being sentenced for his role in anti-Israeli attacks in the early 2000s. In the clip published by Ben Gvir on X, the minister and two other individuals, including a prison guard, surround Barghouti in a corner of his cell. "You will not defeat us. Whoever harms the people of Israel, whoever kills children, whoever kills women... we will erase them," Ben Gvir says in Hebrew. Barghouti tries to respond but is interrupted by Ben Gvir, who says: "No, you know this. And it's been the case throughout history." The video does not specify where Barghouti is currently being held. Contacted by AFP, sources close to Ben Gvir said the meeting took place "by chance" in Ganot prison in southern Israel during an inspection visit by the minister, but they would not say when the footage was filmed. "This morning I read that various 'senior officials' in the Palestinian Authority didn't quite like what I said to arch-terrorist Marwan Barghouti -- may his name be erased," Ben Gvir said in the post accompanying the video on Friday morning. In a statement released by the state-run Palestinian news agency Wafa, the Palestinian Authority's foreign ministry denounced the confrontation as "an unprecedented provocation." Responding to the video in a post on X, the Palestinian mission to the United Nations said Barghouti was "enduring extremely harsh humanitarian conditions in his solitary confinement cell." It added that he had "lost more than half his weight due to deliberate medical neglect and mistreatment." "At the same time, extremist Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir continues to directly threaten him in an attempt to break his will and resilience." Izzat al-Rishq, a member of Hamas's political bureau, expressed solidarity with Barghouti and said "there is no meaning of savagery left that has not been embodied by" Ben Gvir.

Sheikh al-Assir supporters protest in Saida demanding his release
Dozens of supporters of Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir and families of the detained from the Abra events held a sit-in this afternoon, following Friday prayers, in front of the Bilal bin Rabah Mosque in the town of Abra, east of Saida, L'Orient Today's correspondent in the region reported. The protesters carried banners, some of which read: "Free them" and "Save the prisoners." Local activist, Mohammad al-Shamieh delivered a speech during the sit-in, in which he affirmed that the protest actions will continue until the release of Sheikh al-Assir and his companions. Assir was sentenced on Aug. 21, 2021 by the military court to 20 years of hard labor for fighting the Lebanese army in Bhanine in North Lebanon in 2014. A death sentence had already been handed down in 2017 against the Sunni preacher, arrested for the clashes that took place in June 2013 in Abra between Islamists he led and the Lebanese army. 18 soldiers and 11 militiamen were killed in these fights. His companions were sentenced to ten years of hard labor. Assir, who was on the run, was arrested at Beirut airport on Aug. 15, 2015. Having changed his physical appearance, he was almost unrecognizable at the time. He was carrying a fake passport and was trying to flee to Egypt. His relatives and other Islamist detainees regularly demonstrate to demand an amnesty.
