BMC issues showcause notice to Mithun Chakraborty for ‘unauthorised' structure in Malad

Indian Express17-05-2025

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a show cause notice to Bollywood actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty for allegedly constructing unauthorised ground-storey structures at a plot situated at Erangle village in Malad's Madh area.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the actor refuted the allegations, stating that they have no unauthorised structures. 'The notices have been sent to one and all. I have no unauthorised structures. We are sending a reply to the BMC,' Chakraborty told The Indian Express.
Issued on May 10, the BMC notice has directed the actor to furnish sufficient reason for the alterations, failing which the structures will be razed at his own risk while the civic authority has also warned of prosecution.
Last week, the civic body had launched an eviction drive in Madh, after nearly 130 unauthorised constructions, including structures like bungalows, were identified in the area. Having already demolished nearly nine structures in areas such as Erangle village on May 9, senior officials said that all the 130 structures, which had been erected in Madh over the past one year, will be removed by May 31.
Of the several constructions which had come under the BMC's scanner were the structures erected at a plot identified near the Hiradevi Mandir along the Bhaskar Bhopi Marg in Erangle village in Madh. Inspections revealed that the unauthorised work on the plot encompassed two one-plus-mezzanine-storey structures alongside one ground storey structure as well as three temporary 10*10 structures with wooden planks, glass partition wall and an AC sheet roof.
According to civic officials, these constructions at the plot had been established without taking permission from the competent authority, nudging the BMC to issue a show cause notice to Chakraborty on May 10.
Pointing to the constructions sprawled over the plot, the BMC said that the executed work stood in contravention to the provisions of Section 337, 342 and 347 of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act of 1888.
Directing the actor to show sufficient cause within a period of seven days since the notice's receipt, the civic body has asked the actor to justify why the 'said building or work shall not be removed or altered or pulled down or the use of the premises be restored.'
The notice states that if the cause is not sufficient, the building will be pulled down at the owner's risk and cost. Furthermore, the actor, the BMC has warned, may also be subjected to prosecution. As per Section 475A of the municipal action, the act is punishable with penalties and imprisonment.
The show cause letter, according to the civic body, has been issued as per provisions of Section 351 (1A) of the the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act.

Delhi: BJP leaders held en route to Bangladeshi High Commission to protest attack on Tagore's ancestral home

New Delhi [India], June 17 (ANI): Several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including Delhi President Virendraa Sachdeva, were taken to the Chanakyapuri Police Station on Monday evening while they were en route to the Bangladeshi High Commission to protest over the vandalism of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh. The detention occurred as the leaders aimed to submit a memorandum demanding action against the incident, which they described as an attack on Bengali and Hindu culture. Sachdeva, speaking to the media before the detention, condemned the act, stating that the Bangladeshi government should take cognisance of such activities and demanded strict action against such extremist acts. 'We condemn the attack on Rabindranath Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh... This is an attack on Bengali and Hindu culture... We are marching towards the Bangladeshi High Commission and will give a memorandum... Their government should take cognisance of the activities carried out by the extremists. We will not tolerate this disrespect towards the Hindu and Bengali cultures... We demand strict action against the extremists,' Sachdeva said. Earlier today, BJP workers in Kolkata staged a rally from Sealdah Railway Station to the Deputy High Commission of Bangladesh, protesting the vandalism of Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh. The demonstration, led by prominent BJP leaders including Agnimitra Paul and Locket Chatterjee, highlighted the growing concerns over the safety of minorities and the cultural heritage shared between India and Bangladesh. The rally saw participants demanding accountability from the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, over the incident. Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs condemned the 'vandalism' of one of the ancestral homes of Rabindranath Tagore located in Bangladesh. Addressing a media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the violent act is a disgrace to the memory and the inclusive philosophy and the teachings of the Nobel laureate. When asked about reports coming out of Bangladesh on the issue of vandalism of the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore, the MEA Spokesperson said, 'We strongly condemn the despicable attack and vandalisation of the ancestral home of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore by a mob on June 8, 2025. The home, historically called Rabindra Kutcherybari, is located in the Sirajganj district of Bangladesh. The violent act is a disgrace to the memory and the inclusive philosophy and the teachings that the Nobel laureate espoused in Bangladesh.' He further noted, 'The attack falls in the broad pattern of the systematic attempts by the extremists to erase the symbols of tolerance and eviscerate the syncretic culture and the cultural legacy of Bangladesh.' Calling the perpetrators of the act as 'terrorists', MEA urged the interim government to take strict action against the perpetrators. 'We urge the interim government to rein in the terrorists and take strict action against the perpetrators, preventing the recurrence of such incidents that sadly have become a repetitive feature,' the Spokesperson said. Ex-BJP city councillorarrested for runningfinancial fraud racket

Jaipur: A 56-year-old former BJP councillor was arrested Monday for allegedly running a financial fraud racket that duped several people with fake promises of subsidised govt schemes and high returns on investments. The Malpura Gate police station identified the accused as Kanta Chhipa, a resident of Sanganer, who continued the scam even after one of her alleged accomplices, Mala Singh, was arrested earlier. The case was filed on March 3 by Trilok Chhipa, 29, a resident of Krishna City, who alleged that Kanta and others were collecting money from residents by offering cheap rations, scooters, mobile phones, and quick monetary returns. Victims were reportedly lured with offers such as Rs 22,000 in return for a deposit of Rs 5,000, and ration kits worth Rs 2,200 sold for Rs 1,200. Scooters priced at Rs 1 lakh were allegedly offered for Rs 50,000. Police said her close aide Mala Singh, who was also part of the fraud, fled before being arrested. "Kanta touted the scheme as a BJP-linked initiative to win people's trust," said an official, adding that after Mala went underground, Kanta allegedly took over operations, going door-to-door in localities to collect funds while failing to deliver the promised items or issue refunds. A special team was formed under the East District police to probe the matter. Officials said several pieces of evidence, including video footage and online transaction records, were seized. Kanta was sent to judicial custody. "Further investigation is underway to trace the full extent of the racket and identify other accused who were part of the racket," said an official. Police said that they also seized incriminating evidence, including payments made through different methods to the accused.
