I've broken records at 17 and playing for Celtic is my ultimate dream in football

Daily Record01-05-2025

Aussie sensation Dylan Leonard may live on the opposite side of the world. But the record-breaking 17-year-old has revealed his biggest dream in football is to play for Celtic . The teenage centre-back has enjoyed a meteoric rise at Western United - making history as the club's youngest ever debutant and goalscorer in the A-League. Regarded as one of the hottest prospects in Australian football, Leonard has exploded onto the scene by racking up 24 appearances in his first full season with John Aloisi's high flyers. Leonard was raised in a Celtic-supporting family, with both of his parents born in Scotland, and attended last season's 2-2 Champions League draw with Atletico Madrid. Now, the up-and-coming defender has set his sights on following the likes of Tom Rogic , Aaron Mooy and Scott McDonald by pulling on the famous green and white hoops. In an interview with aleagues.com.au , the rising star opened up on his love for Celtic and said: "It's everything. It's probably part of the reason I started playing and have worked so hard in my football career so far, is watching games with my family, going over with my cousins, watching Celtic play. "I know how much that club means to my family and obviously to me. It's definitely been a big part of why I've wanted to play football." Leonard revealed he models his game on former Hoops heroes Paul McStay and Kristoffer Ajer. He said: 'They were players genuinely based off what my dad had told me. 'I watch a lot of Celtic, certain players like Kristoffer Ajer when he was at Celtic and the way he used to drive in. "That's something I took out of his game, and I wanted to implement that into my own game, like being a centre-back, that when team step back, can step in and can play forward, can change the game. 'He used to talk a lot about Paul McStay as well. He would play forward rather than keeping the ball and playing safe, certain players can change games by their ability to play forward. So that was something, even as a centre-back, I've tried to put into my own game.' It may be early days in Leonard's career, but the youngster is determined to reach for the stars and become the latest A-League export at Parkhead. He added: "That's probably one thing I want to achieve in football is play for Celtic. "Win something with Celtic obviously, but that's definitely the one thing I want to do, the one club I want to play for."

The West Coast rapper has previously spoken of investing in the Glasgow football club, similar to Hollywood star Ryan Reynolds's involvement with Wrexham FC. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Snoop Dogg has already published a cookbook and claims to have spoken to chef Gordon Ramsay about a possible venture in Glasgow together – but he has now revealed he wants to set up a fast-food van at Celtic's stadium in the city's east end. He has described Celtic supporters as 'special' and the best fans in European football, and said he identifies strongly with the club's mascot Hoopy the Hound – describing it in a previous interview as a 'match made in heaven'. The keen sports fan worked as a correspondent for NBC at the Paris Olympics last year, has launched two youth football leagues, and has been a vocal advocate for pay equality for female athletes. He told the Sunday Mail that Celtic fans would support the burger van and that it would become a foodie 'Paradise' – the nickname give to Celtic Park. The secret to a good burger is the love in the preparation. The ground beef has got to be mixed with some secret spices, then add a good quality cheese and some maple-cured bacon. ' The Celtic fans are gonna love it, and to make sure they are just right, Snoop is going to be serving them himself.' But he said he would not be taking his culinary ventures to Celtic's Old Firm rivals at Ibrox.

Hearts target addresses Tynecastle links as he declares what's needed in next move

The Hearts transfer target has been speaking on his future and has named what he'll need from wherever he goes next Sign up to our Hearts newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! The winger is currently on duty with the Socceroos but he is out of contract at Melbourne Victory, where has impressed. Arzani has rebuilt his stock at home after showing early promise on the international scene, prompting Manchester City to make a move, but loans like time at Celtic faltered amid injury issues. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad As the Evening News recently reported, Hearts have offered the Australian international a return to British football. Having already agreed to sign Greek wide player Alexandros Kyziridis and with Kazakhstani star Islam Chesnokov possibly on the way too, the Gorgie side could make it a third winger in the door at Tynecastle this summer. What Hearts transfer target said on future Now 26,Arzani is preparing for pastures new and has outlined his thoughts on the future amid Hearts interest. He says that wherever he ends up, he needs to be playing regularly. Arzani said: 'I think anyone now, any of the boys looking to move or off contract, that thought process will be in their head. It's a big deal, a World Cup. It's massive. Everyone wants to be a part of it. It is going to be really competitive and we have a lot of talent coming out of Australia as well. I think it is definitely important that if I go somewhere that I'll be playing week in, week out. I'm not sure what I am doing yet, what direction I am heading in but that's definitely part of the equation." Daniel Arzani verdict on previous European stint The winger has held nothing back on what he thought of his first crack at European football. He said recently: 'The stint that I had overseas, for me was super disappointing and felt like a massive, almost waste of time. I think what didn't help me was that I was constantly doing these five, six-month loan deals while being signed to City – that just doesn't work out. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'It's too difficult to go into teams and just start performing straight off after five months and get into a starting line-up. You're in and out and you're not really that important to the club. So I'm hoping that if I was to make that move over, it would be on a permanent transfer, and hopefully that way I'd be given more of a chance as well.' Former A-League star Tommy Oar recently said of the attacker: 'There's not been many young Australian players like him in the last kind of 10, 20, years, to be honest. I think he's so exciting every time he gets the ball. I do think if you look at kind of his trajectory, and you know why there's maybe been so many critics, I think that he's a little bit maybe a victim of his own early success. 'Because when he broke onto the scene, he was obviously mesmerizing to watch. He was so young, got into the Socceroos, went to the World Cup, and everybody put his level so high so early, that any time he didn't play that to that level, he was quickly criticised. I think that can be a little bit harsh, because especially over the last few months. I think that for somebody, if there was someone who'd never seen Daniel Arzani play, and you saw him play over the last few months, you'd be thinking, Who is this kid? He's unbelievable. 'The way he takes players on is so positive. So I do empathise with him a little bit in terms of the criticism that he cops, but at the same time, I think that he's matured a lot in recent times. This season, it was a really important season. Remember him obviously at Macarthur, things didn't work out for him the way he would have wanted. I think that this was a really decisive season. And so far, particularly in the second half of the season, he's kind of reminded everyone of how good he is.'

Boxer Fabio Wardley hails Ipswich fans after last-gasp knockout wins hometown heavyweight clash

Boxing star Fabio Wardley hailed the dedication of his hometown fans after he delivered a stunning late knockout to win his much-anticipated heavyweight clash in the dying minutes. But despite securing victory against previously unbeaten Australian Justis Huni in Saturday night's clash at Ipswich Town's Portman Road stadium, he vowed to improve in the future after admitting he was far from his best. Ipswich fighter Wardley, 30, only started boxing at a local gym when he was 19, taking part in just four white collar fights before turning professional. He has since risen up the heavyweight ranks at breakneck speed, culminating in Saturday's historic bout in his home town - the first time Portman Road has ever hosted a boxing event. However, with the rain pouring down, for much of the fight it had looked like Wardley's big night would turn out to be a damp squib as Huni dominated proceedings. Huni, 26, had only stepped in at late notice after Wardley's previous opponent, American Jarrell Miller, was forced to withdraw from the contest because of a shoulder injury. With timing running out, Wardley's trademark power once again saved him though - a savage right hand in the 10th round sending Huni crashing to the canvas. The remarkable finish will live long in the memory of the 20,000-strong crowd in attendance, and after the fight, Wardley said the victory wouldn't have been possible without the support of the fans who braved the wet weather to get behind him. "There's been so many great fighters who have great fan bases, great support," he said. "They can shift a bunch of tickets, and even then, they still don't get to pull off a stadium fight in their home town. And little old white collar Wardley has somehow pulled this off." Reflecting on his performance, Wardley added: "Performance wise, I am much better than I showed tonight but sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do to win. It's not always going to be perfect. "I am going to have to figure things out on the fly and grit through it, and fortunately I have got that in me. I've got to learn and these fights make me better." The knockout was Wardley's 18th in 19 fights, and moved him a step closer to a potential world title shot. Wardley is now ranked number one by the WBA - meaning he could be in a strong position to face the winner of the Oleksandr Usyk v Daniel Dubois fight next month. Whatever happens in the future, Wardley has at least now achieved his lifelong dream of fighting at the home of his beloved Ipswich Town, and given fans a night to remember. "He showed a lot of resilience and grit in there," said Wardley's promoter, Frank Warren. "It only takes one punch. He found the punch and he did it. He did the business in style. That's what he is. He's a fighter."
