Rupee slips past 87-mark against US dollar, hits lowest level in over 4 months. What's behind the weakness?
The Indian rupee weakened past the 87 level against the US dollar on Wednesday, hitting its lowest level since mid-March, amid uncertainty over the proposed India-US trade deal and a surge in global crude oil prices. Analysts also attributed the decline to month-end dollar demand from importers and continued foreign fund outflows. Rupee opened on a weaker note and depreciated by 24 paise from its previous close, touching an early low of 87.15 against the greenback. In the previous session, the rupee had already slipped to an over four-month low, ending 21 paise lower at 86.91. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, fell by 0.11% to 98.77. US President Donald Trump said Indian exports to the US would likely see 20% - 25% tariffs, a move that could squeeze export margins, widen the current account deficit, and keep the rupee under pressure. 'A possible 20–25% tariff on Indian exports, suggested by US political rhetoric, has intensified pressure. Delays in concluding a bilateral trade deal, with a deadline looming August 1, are denting investor confidence. A surging US dollar index, partly due to euro weakness after a US–EU trade deal, is applying headwinds to the INR,' said Jigar Trivedi, Senior Research Analyst at Reliance Securities. Meanwhile, Reuters reported that India is holding off on fresh trade concessions ahead of the August 1 deadline and instead aims to wrap up a comprehensive bilateral deal by September or October. 'The rupee slipped to a fresh four-month low, caught in a crossfire of delayed trade progress, surging oil prices, and global risk repricing. With no breakthrough on the India-US trade front and crude rising sharply, the rupee had little choice but to retreat,' said Amit Pabari, MD, CR Forex Advisors. On the domestic front, focus will be on the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) monetary policy next week. 'While rates are expected to remain unchanged, the stance will be crucial — a more cautious and assertive tone could support the rupee, whereas a lenient or accommodative approach may weigh on it further,' Pabari said. Jigar Trivedi believes if US-India trade negotiations escalate, or if tariff threats materialize, USD/INR could temporarily breach 87.20 and 87.60 levels in August. Amit Pabari expects the pressure on rupee is likely to persist in the near term. 'Continued dollar strength and trade uncertainty could push it further toward the 87.20 – 87.35 zone. The 87 mark remains a critical level, as heightened volatility around it may trigger RBI intervention. On the downside, support is seen between 86.20 and 86.50,' Pabari said. Delhi govt approves night shifts for women, shops must follow safety rules
The Delhi government has approved a proposal that will now allow women to work night shifts in shops and commercial establishments. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the decision on Tuesday, calling it a step towards making Delhi a 24x7 business hub and improving women's participation in the workforce, news agency PTI reported. Calling it a 'historic decision', CM Gupta said the move is a big step for women's economic empowerment and independence. 'This policy is not just about extending work hours, but it is a statement of our intent to create a safer, more inclusive working environment for women in the national capital,' she said. She said that with this decision, Delhi will now join states like Haryana, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, which already allow women to work during night hours. According to an official statement, companies must first get written consent from female employees before assigning them night shifts. Employers will also need to ensure safety measures such as: -Providing transport for women workers -CCTV surveillance -Female security staff -Proper toilets, restrooms, and lockers The government has made it compulsory for all establishments to set up Internal Complaints Committees as required under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act. Changes to old law needed The new decision requires amendments to the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, 1954. As of now, the law does not allow women to work between 9 pm and 7 am in the summer and between 8 pm and 8 am in the winter. Once the changes are cleared by the Lieutenant Governor, women will officially be allowed to work at any time. The statement also said that employers must ensure fair treatment of workers on night duty. This includes: -Payment through electronic transfers -Benefits such as ESI, PF, and bonuses -Weekly offs and overtime pay 'This step will make Delhi a more business-friendly destination while reinforcing our commitment to gender parity at the workplace,' Chief Minister Gupta said.

Indian textile manufacturer Arvind posts profit jump as brands move away from China
Textile manufacturer Arvind reported a 35 per cent rise in first-quarter profit on Tuesday as global brands move to increase their sourcing from India instead of China. Arvind, which counts Western brands such as Gap and H&M among its clients, posted a consolidated net profit of 532.4 million Indian rupees ($6.13 million) for the three months ended June 30. U.S. brands have been diversifying their supply chains beyond China, due in part to geopolitical tensions, while political turmoil in Bangladesh has also prompted global brands to be open to sourcing more from India. Arvind reported a 10 per cent growth in revenue from operations to 20.06 billion rupees, driven by a 14 per cent increase in revenue from its core textiles business, which accounts for roughly two-thirds of its total sales. The apparel maker said its strong order book signals increased global interest in India as a sourcing destination. However, Arvind flagged a knock to its margins for the first half of fiscal 2026 - even as it forecast margins to expand in the second half - due to higher input costs, discounts, and air freight tied to U.S. tariff-led disruptions. A 10 per cent baseline import levy imposed by the United States remains in effect, even as President Donald Trump has paused steeper country-specific tariffs on Indian goods, weighing on margins at textile exporters.
