Test could identify women at increased risk of miscarriage

British scientists have developed a test that detects abnormalities in the womb lining, which could help identify women with an increased risk of suffering a miscarriage. It is hoped it will pave the way for more treatments to prevent repeated pregnancy losses.
About one in six pregnancies are lost and the majority of these happen before 12 weeks. Each miscarriage increases the risk of another occurring. Charities said that the findings could help to provide an explanation for repeated miscarriages. According to the team from Warwick University, in some women the womb lining does not react as it should during pregnancy. The test they developed can measure signs of a healthy or defective reaction in the womb lining. It is now being piloted to help more than a thousand patients at Tommy's National Centre for Miscarriage Research at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire (UHCW).Dr Jo Muter, the lead author of the study and a researcher at Warwick Medical School, told the BBC: 'Many women are told they've just had 'bad luck', but our findings show that the womb itself may be setting the stage for pregnancy loss, even before conception takes place.'Much of the research in this area has focused on the embryo, rather than the womb hosting it. The womb lining during pregnancy undergoes a reaction, which converts the cells to a more supportive state. In cases where this does not happen or this reaction is faulty, the risk of bleeding and pregnancy loss increases. When a faulty reaction occurs, it is more likely to occur again, according to the research team.
Dr Jyotsna Vohra, director of research at Tommy's, said that care and treatment for those who experienced pregnancy or baby loss varied unacceptably across the UK.
'There should be no barriers to accessing any test or treatment that has been proven to make a difference.
'We hope NHS decision-makers will look carefully at the results of the Coventry pilot project and consider rolling this test out nationwide, so that everyone who might benefit has that opportunity.'
Vohra said that women suffering trauma after recurrent miscarriages were often 'left without answers', and that the test could offer some consolation by explaining the cause.
The Warwick team analysed around 1,500 biopsies from more than 1,300 women for the study.
Abnormal responses in the menstrual lining recurred across menstrual cycles for some women, suggesting a consistent cause of miscarriage risk which could be prevented.
One of the women offered the new test, Holly Milkouris, said that it was 'life-changing' after she suffered five miscarriages.
After the problems affecting her womb lining were detected and treated, Milkouris and her husband had two healthy children, now aged three and 17 months.
Milkouris told The Guardian: 'We felt lost and were beginning to accept that I might never successfully carry a pregnancy.
'The treatments that typically can help women who have experienced miscarriages hadn't worked for us and each time we tried again we felt like we were rolling a dice with the baby's life.
'For the first time the results of my biopsy were normal, and we went on to have not one, but two successful pregnancies.'Muter said that the next step would be to use the test to assess potential drug treatments.
Sitagliptin, a drug usually used to treat diabetes, is currently the go-to option for problems with the womb lining but Muter said that other existing drugs could be repurposed. Only 20 per cent of potential drugs are currently tested on pregnant women.

Under the plans, GPs will take a bigger role leading neighbourhood health services, which could bring a range of services together. This could result in pharmacies offering a wider range of checks and services, and high street opticians carrying out assessments and diagnostics for common eye conditions, he suggested. Mr Streeting said the plans would aim to create 'a real partnership between GPs and other parts of the primary care system' – instead of them scrapping over resources. He said the shift away from hospitals would see more NHS services, including those run directly by the NHS, on the high street. Last year the NHS launched a scheme that means people can consult pharmacists about seven common conditions – including sore throats, earache and urinary tract infections – instead of having to make an appointment with a doctor. Health officials are looking to expand the role of pharmacists further, dealing with a wider range of conditions, relieving pressures on GP surgeries. Hospitals could also take over the running of GP practices, as part of efforts to improve access to care across neighbourhoods. Last week the Health Secretary said he would not shrink from leaning more heavily on the private sector to improve access to NHS care. Wes Streeting said he 'refused to be bound by outdated ideological battles', saying using independent hospitals to provide taxpayer-funded care did not contradict the principles of the health service. Writing for The Telegraph he said he would fight for the future of the NHS, warning of a 'national emergency' facing the country. Mr Streeting made the comments as new figures showed that almost 1.4 million people have had private care on the NHS since Labour won the election. Next week he will launch a 10-year plan for the NHS, which promises three major shifts – from hospital to community, from analogue to digital and from treating sickness to prevention, with private sector involvement expected to play a key role. Elsewhere under the plans, patients will be able to refer themselves for therapy through the NHS app. Instead of having to turn to costly mental health apps, the NHS app 'offers a free service built by trusted clinicians', according to a spokesman. Some 6,700 more mental health workers have been recruited since July 2024. Mr Streeting said: 'Not getting the right support for your mental health isn't just debilitating, it can hit a painful pause button on your life – stopping you working, enjoying time with family and friends, or living day-to-day life. 'Patients have faced the crisis of access to mental health services for far too long, and this Government is determined to change that through our Plan for Change to rebuild the NHS. 'That's why we're putting digital front doors on mental health services for patients up and down the country and harnessing technology to provide 24-hour care. And we're creating more opportunities for support not just through the NHS App but through care in your community too. 'We are already over halfway towards our target of recruiting 8,500 extra mental health workers, and through our upcoming 10 year health plan we will get more people back to health and back to work.'

The human genetic code will be built from scratch by British scientists in a controversial new research project. The £10 million scheme to synthesise DNA is being funded by the Wellcome Trust and involves scientists from universities including Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College. Since the human genome was decoded at the start of the century, researchers have questioned whether it might be possible to use the blueprint to create genes and chromosomes artificially. In the five year project, the team hopes to create a fully synthetic human chromosome - making up about 2 per cent of human DNA - as a proof of concept. Michael Dunn, director of discovery research at Wellcome, said: ' Our DNA determines who we are and how our bodies work. 'Through creating the necessary tools and methods to synthesise a human genome we will answer questions about our health and disease that we cannot even anticipate yet, in turn transforming our understanding of life and wellbeing.' Researchers say synthetic genomes could help create new cell-based therapies or engineer plant species with new properties, such as being able to withstand pests and warming climates. Synthetic genomes have already been developed for small organisms such as the sexually transmitted bacterium Mycoplasma genitalium and But the human genome is much more complicated. However, experts said it is crucial to make sure the technology is not abused and that regulations are put in place. 'You can only truly understand something if you can build it from scratch,' said Prof Robin Lovell-Badge, group leader of the Francis Crick Institute in London. 'It is critical when developing new technology to understand not just issues of potential utility, but also those concerned with safety and risk. 'If these were to ever be used in humans, it would be important to design them carefully so that they can't lead to tumours or produce novel infectious particles. 'Indeed, I would urge incorporating an inducible genetic kill switch to eliminate them from any location in the body or at least to make them easy for the immune system to find and destroy.' The Wellcome Trust said it was commissioning a separate project to look into the ethics and public opinion on the research. Dr Pat Thomas, director of the campaign group Beyond GM, told the BBC: 'We like to think that all scientists are there to do good, but the science can be repurposed to do harm and for warfare'.

Hospital staff said they were "truly saddened" to confirm the hospital's chief executive, Stacey Keegan, said the news had "come as a huge shock to colleagues across the organisation."She was an excellent and supportive colleague, and was proud of the work we do here and of the colleagues that deliver such exceptional care."She was held in extremely high regard by everyone at RJAH thanks to her excellent clinical knowledge, her absolute dedication to patient care, but most notably the quality of her character.
