Fraud probe opened into Mbappé payments to police officers
"Investigations, which are by their very nature complex in the case of financial transactions, are underway in order to establish whether any criminal offences have been committed," the public prosecutor's office said.
French investigative weekly Le Canard Enchâiné on Wednesday reported that the France national team captain's money was used to "pay under the table for private services", to the tune of €180,300.
The Real Madrid striker's entourage issued a statement saying "everything was done in compliance with the rules".
It added that Mbappé had "always chosen to donate in full his bonuses" for playing for France at international level.
"It's what he did after the 2022 World Cup, with complete transparency," the statement continued, saying the money went to charitable organisations and security personnel that accompanied the team.

France says it arrested an individual suspected of running XSS, a major cybercrime forum
The Paris prosecutor's office announced on Wednesday, July 23, that an individual suspected of being the administrator of XSS, a major discussion forum considered one of the world's most significant cybercrime platforms, had been taken into custody. The authorities suspect this person, who was arrested the day before in Kyiv, of being the forum's central administrator, under the pseudonym "toha." "Investigators believe he has been active in the cybercrime ecosystem for nearly two decades," said Europol, which supported the operation, in a statement. Toha has been running the forum since 2018, when he relaunched the discussion space after the previous administrator, known under the pseudonym "Ar3s," was arrested in Belarus. The suspect was arrested in Ukraine the day before, apprehended by local authorities acting "in the presence of French police" and with the support of Europol, according to a statement from the Paris prosecutor's office. An initial investigation on the matter was opened in July 2021 and was assigned to the Paris police prefecture's Counter-Cybercrime Brigade (BL2C). Later, "a judicial investigation was opened on November 9, 2021, on charges of complicity in attacks on automated data processing systems, extortion by an organized group and criminal conspiracy," the prosecutor's office said.

Springboks omit Mapimpi, De Klerk for Wallabies Tests
Salmaan Moerat, who captained the Springboks to victory over Italy this month, is also left out of a 37-man squad consisting of 20 forwards and 17 backs. The two Tests against the Wallabies mark the start of the southern hemisphere title defence by South Africa, which also includes two matches in New Zealand and home and away games against Argentina. "It is always challenging to reduce the squad, especially given how the expanded group of players put up their hands (in four build-up matches)," said head coach Rassie Erasmus. "But we always said we would select a smaller, more manageable squad during the Rugby Championship. "This group includes several experienced players and a few younger guys, who grabbed their chances in the last few Tests, so we are pleased with this squad for the first two matches." Veteran winger Mapimpi loses out only because of fierce competition to fill the number 14 and 11 shirts between Cheslin Kolbe, Kurt-Lee Arendse and Edwill van der Merwe. Kolbe and Arendse are the current first choices while Van der Merwe sparkled during July, scoring four tries in successive victories against Italy and Georgia. Canan Moodie, who plays at centre or on the wing, also starred during the four-match build-up for the Rugby Championship and his versatility should make him a strong candidate for at least a place on the bench. Hotly contested De Klerk drops out of the hotly contested scrum-half race with in-form Grant Williams, Cobus Reinach and Morne van den Berg preferred. Head coach Rassie Erasmus has said that 2023 World Cup winner Jaden Hendrikse -- not part of the build-up squad -- could also come into the reckoning later this season. The absence of Moerat leaves Eben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager, Ruan Nortje, R.G. Snyman and possibly Cobus Wiese competing for the lock positions. Cobus Wiese has been a second-rower for much of his career, but was deployed as a number 8 against Georgia last weekend in the absence of older brother Jasper, who is serving a four-match ban. Fit-again Jean-Luc du Preez and utility loose forward Kwagga Smith are other options to partner probable flankers Pieter-Steph du Toit and captain Siya Kolisi in the back row. South Africa face Australia at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on August 16 and at Cape Town Stadium seven days later. Squad Forwards: Lood de Jager, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Jean-Luc du Preez, Eben Etzebeth, Vincent Koch, Siya Kolisi (capt), Wilco Louw, Malcolm Marx, Bongi Mbonambi, Franco Mostert, Ox Nche, Ruan Nortje, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Kwagga Smith, RG Snyman, Marnus van der Merwe, Marco van Staden, Boan Venter, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Cobus Wiese Backs: Kurt-Lee Arendse, Damian de Allende, Andre Esterhuizen, Aphelele Fassi, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Ethan Hooker, Jesse Kriel, Cheslin Kolbe, Willie le Roux, Manie Libbok, Canan Moodie, Handre Pollard, Cobus Reinach, Edwill van der Merwe, Morne van den Berg, Grant Williams, Damian Willemse dl/bsp © 2025 AFP

France's first top drug lords moved to new supermax prison
Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said on X that 17 drug traffickers – 'among the most dangerous in our country' – had been transferred to the prison in the northern town of Vendin-le-Vieil 'under exceptional security conditions'. Seven prison vans arrived at the site on Tuesday, accompanied by police motorcycle escorts. Darmanin has said he wants to lock up 200 of France's biggest drug traffickers in two top-security prisons, including Vendin-le-Vieil, in a bid to crack down on networks that operate from within jails. READ ALSO France adopts new bill to combat drug-related crime In October, a high-security prison wing is to open in the north-western French town of Conde-sur-Sarthe. David Lacroix, who represents the FO Justice union, said that around 60 out of the 100 prisoners due to be sent to Vendin-le-Vieil are to arrive this month with the rest due by mid-September. The prisoners come from mainland France as well as France's Caribbean territories, he added. 'Their daily lives will change,' said Lacroix. As part of the new regime, mobile phone signals will be jammed and prisoners will undergo mandatory searches after every contact with the outside world. Thomas Vaugrand, a representative of Ufap Unsa Justice union, said the measures aimed to increase the isolation of the traffickers. 'These will be high-profile inmates,' he said. 'They are all prisoners who have significant financial resources on the outside and the means to continue their trafficking or order murders from their cells.' The Vendin-le-Vieil jail, one of France's two most secure prisons, has been renovated to strengthen its security. The exercise yard has been concreted over to prevent objects from being hidden and an airport-style body scanner installed. Advertisement Grating has been added to the bars on the cells and hatches installed on all doors so that prisoners can be handcuffed before they leave their cells. A glass screen now prevents physical contact between inmates and visitors. Notorious drug baron Mohamed Amra, known as 'La Mouche' , will eventually be one of the Vendin-le-Vieil inmates. Darmanin pushed for tougher security after an attack last year on a prison van carrying Amra in which he was freed and two prison guards killed.
