Yahooa day ago

Nashville SC has been one of the best teams in Major League Soccer over the past month. But does it have what it takes to beat one of the best teams in MLS over the past three years?
Nashville (8-4-3, 27 points) takes on the Columbus Crew (7-2-6, 27 points) at Lower.com field in Columbus on May 28 (7 p.m. CT, FS1). While Nashville and Columbus are tied on points, NSC sits third in the Eastern Conference, two spots ahead of the Crew, based on goal differential.

Nashville is 6-0-2 in its past eight games across all competitions and is on a six-match unbeaten streak in MLS play. A win or a draw against Columbus would tie for the longest unbeaten streak across all competitions since Nashville entered MLS in 2020.
Columbus won the 2023 MLS Cup championship and finished second in the league last season, though it lost in the first round of the playoffs. In addition, the Crew were the runners-up of the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup and won the Leagues Cup title.
The Crew are 0-1-3 during their past four league games and are coming off a 3-2 loss at Charlotte FC on May 24, but have yet to lose at their home stadium.

Goin' back to Indiana: Knicks find their groove in Game 5, beat Pacers to keep series alive

NEW YORK – Jalen Brunson scored 32 points to lead the Knicks to a 111-94 win over the Pacers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night, avoiding elimination and forcing a Game 6 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday night. The Pacers still hold a 3-2 series lead. Karl-Anthony Towns added 24 points and 13 rebounds. Wings Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges added 12 points each. Bennedict Mathurin led the Pacers with 23 points and eight rebounds. Pascal Siakam added 15 points and forward Obi Toppin added 11. Backs-to-the-wall games like these tend to bring out the best in a team's stars, who are often the ones most determined not to let their season's end. Such was the case Thursday as Knicks All-NBA picks Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns played some of their best basketball of the series. Brunson established in the first quarter that he didn't plan to go quietly, scoring 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting including 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Then Towns took over in the second quarter with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Neither had any trouble getting to their spots and forcing the ball into the paint and Brunson was spectacular from outside. Brunson finished with 32 points on 12-of-18 shooting including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Towns scored 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting and also grabbed 13 rebounds. After a mostly seamless offensive performance on Tuesday in Game 4 that included one of the most efficient offensive statlines by a point guard in playoff history in Tyrese Haliburton's triple-double, the Pacers never seemed to be able to get out of their own way on Thursday. Their offensive flow was choppy from the very beginning, the defense was never able to keep the ball out of the paint and none of their desperate attempts at a jump start seemed to work. Bennedict Mathurin scored 23 points mostly by driving through hell and high water. He was 6-of-10 from the floor and 9-of-9 to the line. Pascal Siakam willed himself to 15 points on 5-of-13 shooting but the Pacers couldn't seem to get anything going otherwise. Haliburton followed his 32-point, 15-assist, 10-rebound, zero-turnover effort with just eight points on 2-of-7 shooting. Forward Aaron Nesmith seemed to be feeling some of his sprained right ankle and finished with just three points on 1-of-8 shooting. Center Myles Turner finished with just five points and two rebounds and struggled on both ends of the floor. The Pacers shot just 40.5% from the floor and 10-of-30 from beyond the 3-point arc and posted 0.96 points per possession. Meanwhile the Knicks shot 49.4% from the floor and posted a 1.08 efficiency figure. The Knicks outscored the Pacers 60-34 in the paint and 13-7 on second-chance points. After scoring a total of eight points in the Cavs series, Pacers second-year wing and 2023 No. 8 pick Jarace Walker didn't play at all in the first four games of the Eastern Conference finals. Things got messy enough in the early going on Thursday, though, that he got real meaningful minutes. Walker's first appearance came with 2:56 to go in the second quarter thanks to Myles Turner foul trouble and Aaron Nesmith apparently working his way through the ankle sprain that had him listed as questionable for Game 4. Walker stepped in and made a small but noticeable impact, helping the Pacers get a stop on his first defensive possession with two contests on one play. A few possessions later he drilled a 3-pointer off a kickout from Tyrese Haliburton.

Knicks vs. Pacers score, recap: New York forces Game 6 with another stellar night from Jalen Brunson

The New York Knicks found a lead that was safe against the Indiana Pacers. In a 2025 Eastern Conference finals that has seen both teams choke away big leads, the Knicks found a Game 5 advantage and kept it against their fellow comeback artists in a 111-94 win. Game 6 is scheduled for Saturday in Indiana (8 p.m. ET, TNT). Advertisement It was Indiana's first loss in a Game 5 all playoffs, after closing out the Milwaukee Bucks and Cleveland Cavaliers in the same situation. The mechanics of the blowout came down to two major factors: Jalen Brunson and a miserable night on offense for the Pacers. The Knicks star posted 32 points on 12-of-18 shooting with five rebounds and five assists, continuing a stellar series in which he was averaging 33.3 points per game entering Thursday. Brunson's point guard counterpart, Tyrese Haliburton, was a bit quieter. He posted eight points on 2-of-7 shooting with six assists and two rebounds. As a team, the Pacers shot 40.5% with 19 turnovers. None of that is to say the Pacers were dead all night, though. The Knicks never trailed and were up by as many as 22 points late in the third quarter, but Indiana cut it to 12 early in the fourth quarter. Any fan in Madison Square Garden who says they weren't worried at that point is lying. Advertisement Tom Thibodeau was certainly concerned, as that was when Knicks head coach reinserted his starters. That group held on until Indiana finally waved the white flag with two minutes remaining. "Knicks in 7" chants rang out soon after. This article will be updated with more information.

Seattle Kraken hire Lane Lambert as head coach

Field Level Media The Seattle Kraken named Lane Lambert their head coach on Thursday, more than one month after firing Dan Bylsma. Most recently the associate coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Lambert heads into his second stint as an NHL boss after leading the New York Islanders in 2022-23 and part of 2023-24. "When it came time to writing a new chapter, I couldn't think of a better fit," Lambert told the Kraken's team website. "Seattle is an incredible sports town, and I've been impressed by the energy of the fans every time I've been there as a visiting coach. This team has a talented group of young players poised to take the next step and a core group of veterans with great leadership qualities." The franchise will embark on its fifth NHL season with its third head coach after Bylsma spent a single season behind the bench, which ended with Seattle missing the playoffs. Dave Hakstol coached the Kraken for their first three years in the league and guided them to one postseason trip. It was the latest step the Kraken took to reshape their front office and coaching staff this offseason. Ron Francis was elevated from general manager to president of hockey operations and Jason Botterill was promoted to GM last month. Botterill led the search for a head coach, according to the team. In a statement, Botterill cited Lambert's work as an assistant coach with the Washington Capitals when they won the 2018 Stanley Cup. "We cast a wide net for suitable candidates," Botterill told the team website. "What impressed us throughout the interview process was Lane's strategy and vision for this team. He was an integral part of the Capitals winning the Cup and the Islanders advancing to two straight Eastern Conference finals. We have full confidence in Lane to lead this team behind the bench." In Seattle, Lambert will work with three players whom he coached in Washington: goaltender Philipp Grubauer and forwards Chandler Stephenson and Andre Burakovsky. Kraken captain Jordan Eberle also spent time playing for Lambert in New York. Lambert was an assistant under Barry Trotz with the Islanders before being named his successor when Trotz was fired in 2022. Lambert has a 61-46-20 record as an NHL head coach. NHL coaching hires NHL coach openings Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins.
