American Frances Tiafoe has dumped Australia's Aleksandar Vukic from the Canadian Open in Toronto, setting up a clash with another Aussie, Alex de Minaur.
Vukic took the tournament's seventh-seed to three sets before going down 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 on Friday.
Tiafoe will now play de Minaur in the round of 16 with the ninth seed advancing after fellow Aussie Christopher O'Connell withdrew.
After dropping the opening set, Vukic fought back in the second, breaking Tiafoe in the opening game.
He also had an early break point in the deciding set but failed to capitalise.
Tiafoe then broke in the eighth game before serving out the match.
In other matches, second-seeded Taylor Fritz of the US beat Canadian Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 6-2 to set up a fourth-round clash with 19th-seed Jiri Lehecka of Czechia.
Lehecka beat 15th-seeded Arthur Fils of France 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
In the afternoon session, sixth-seeded Andrey Rublev of Russia beat Lorenzo Sonego of Italy 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
Rublev will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain, a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Czech Jakub Mensik.
"In the second and third sets, I was able to play more aggressive, fewer mistakes," Rublev said.
"Let's see what's happening next, I'm super excited and motivated."

Carlton AFLW captain Kerryn Peterson celebrates ‘dream' birth of first child days before new season

Carlton captain Kerryn Peterson has announced the birth of her first child with husband Joel. The 33-year-old shared the news of her pregnancy in February, confirming she would be sidelined from the 2025 AFLW season beginning with Thursday night's blockbuster opener against Collingwood. And with fortuitous timing the baby boy arrived just in time to cheer on his mum's Blues alongside her. 'Max Edward Peterson,' the couple announced on Tuesday night. 'What an absolute dream.' Carlton celebrated the news while teammates rushed to congratulate — and book in their first meeting. 'As if Thursday night's season opener wasn't exciting enough,' the club wrote. 'Sending all the love in the world to Kez and husband Joel on the arrival of Max.' Blues vice-captain Mimi Hill said: 'He's so cute my guyyy.' Keeley Skepper wrote: 'Can't wait to babysit! Congrats ily.' Darcy Verscio wrote: 'Beautiful fam. Welcome to the world Max.' Former teammate Mua Laloifi wrote: 'How beautiful. Congratulations to you both!' Aussie basketballer Alice Kunek said: 'Congratulations! He is beautiful.' Peterson, captain since 2020, stayed involved during the pre-season working alongside coach Matthew Buck. 'Joel and I have a really exciting journey ahead of us and can't wait to welcome our own little Bluebagger into the world,' Peterson said at the time of her pregnancy announcement. 'This footy club and its people have always been the most incredible support to us, and we're excited for our baby to become part of it. 'It will be a different looking year for me, I've already been driving 'Bucky' (coach Matthew Buck) mad trying to decide what off-field role I'll play this season. 'In the meantime, I'll be down at the club and involved in as many sessions as I can and helping our group prepare for the season ahead.' Head here to watch AFLW live, free and on-demand on 7plus Sport Abbie McKay has stepped up from vice-captain to lead the team in Peterson's absence this year. 'I am so honoured and so excited to be named as captain,' the daughter of club great Andrew said in May. 'It is hard to believe that just a few years ago I wasn't getting picked in the side, so if my appointment is anything to go by it is to dream big. 'I have so many incredible people around me and I know leadership is not a role for one person: our team has a one-in-all-in mentality. 'I am grateful that leaders who have come before me such as Kerryn Peterson, Darcy Vescio and Breann Harrington have set a standard that has empowered our group to take this program to another level in the coming years.'

Weary Popyrin suffers agonising defeat in Cincinnati

After three-and-a-half hours in sweltering Ohio heat Alexei Popyrin just ran out of gas in an epic Cincinnati Open third round tie with ninth seed Andrey Rublev. Popyrin lost 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (5-7) 5-7 after a see-saw encounter that could easily have gone the other way. The Australian, himself ranked 19, will have the consolation of a very good workout ahead of the US Open, and may appreciate some rest after such a draining encounter. However, his chances of a top 16 ranking and better seeding slot in New York appear to be gone. When Rublev's passing shot beat him to seal victory with the Russian's first match point Popyrin looked very weary, then smiled ruefully as he dragged himself to the net to give his opponent a hug. The pair had slugged it out for three tight sets, interrupted in the last by a lengthy rain break. First up on Court 3, in front of a decent crowd mainly supporting Rublev, Popyrin's opening serve was broken from 40-0 up, but he broke back immediately, helped by a brace of double-faults by the Russian. The first set thereafter went with serve to the tiebreak. After four mini-breaks in that Popyrin served an ace at 5-5 then Rublev, facing set point, double-faulted. The second set went with serve to the tiebreak, albeit Popyrin had to save three break points while forcing none. After double-faulting at 4-5 in the breaker he broke for 5-5, only for Rublev to sweep the next two points and the tiebreak. The pair had been playing for more than two hours at this stage, in 32C heat. There followed an epic 28-point service game in which Popyrin forced but failed to take four break points. The match had begun shortly after 11am local time, in fierce sunshine, but for some time humidity had been rising and clouds building. Suddenly, with the third set poised at 2-1 to Rublev, and 30-30 on Popyrin's serve, a cloudburst flooded the court and sent players and spectators rushing for cover. Popyrin immediately went a break point down when they resumed just under an hour later, but saved it before serving out with two aces. The match then went with serve until, at 30-30 and 5-6 down, the Australian had to step away from his serve due to a ringing mobile phone. It may have made no difference but his subsequent serves weren't quite there and Rublev pounced. The Russian now meets Argentina's Francisco Comensana who beat Reilly Opelka 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 7-5. Adam Walton is also in third round action, against Jiri Lehecka, the 22nd-seeded Czech. The winner will meet No.5 seed Ben Shelton or Roberto Bautista Agut in the last 16. Elsewhere on Tuesday three-time grand slam semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov has withdrawn from the US Open, a little more than a month after he tore a chest muscle and had to quit playing against Jannik Sinner at Wimbledon. Alejandro Tabilo gets his spot in the men's singles, which starts on August 24.

Magic survive elimination final

Mandurah Magic's in-form women's basketballers are eyeing a giant-killing run through the NBL1 West playoffs after cruising through their elimination final against East Perth. The 45-point blowout last Saturday sets up an appetising knockout semi-final this Thursday against Rockingham Flames, with the winner of that game to face Warwick Senators on Saturday for a spot in the grand final. But it's season over for Mandurah's men's team, who bowed out of their championship defence with a 109-95 loss in Kalgoorlie to the Goldfields Giants. The final scoreline did not reflect how the game panned out nor the chance Mandurah — playing without injured stars Julian Pesava and Jacoree Ealy — had to pull off a surprise road victory. The Magic led by 19 points midway through a huge first term but the home side whittled the break over the next 20 minutes to be in front by a point at the last change. And as things got heated on court, it was the Giants and the parochial home crowd that took the momentum, surging to a big lead and eventual victory. Lachie Bertram led Mandurah with 26 points while De'Sean Parsons wound back the clock for Goldfields in scoring 38 points. The Magic women were never headed in their 105-60 victory over the Eagles at home in Mandurah, opening an 11-point break by quarter-time and building on it every period. Claire Jacobs was the star with a sharpshooting 35-point haul that included 7 of 13 three-pointers and all eight of her free throw attempts. Import McKenna Dale finished desperately close to a rare triple-double with nine points, nine rebounds and 10 assists. Fellow American Tina Stephens dominated with 27 points in just 21 minutes of court time as Mandurah coach Vlad Alama was able to rest his starters often and share the playing minutes. In all, 11 of Mandurah's 12 players hit the scoresheet, with the bench unit contributing 22 points. The Flames will be considerably tougher to knock off. Last year's champions are peaking at the right end of the season and went within a whisker of handing Cockburn Cougars their first loss of 2025 in last weekend's qualifying final. Thursday's game will be played at Rockingham's Mike Barnett Sports Complex from 6.30pm.
