
From format to forecast, what to know about NASCAR's Clash at Bowman Gray
The exhibition race, though, will be at a new venue for the first time. A venue steeped in NASCAR tradition.
Bowman Gray Stadium, a quarter-mile racetrack that encircles a football field, played host to Cup races from 1958-1971. Known as "The Madhouse" from a reality television show in 2010 that followed the rambunctious modified racing series at the track, Bowman Gray is also the site of football games for Winston-Salem (N.C.) State University.
The track is owned by the city of Winston-Salem, and last March, NASCAR obtained the promotional rights to the racing at the facility. Eight drivers entered in the Clash have experience in stock cars at Bowman Gray from NASCAR East Series (think single-A baseball) events held there from 2011-2015.
Here are the answers to five questions about the Clash, with the main event happening on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET Sunday on FOX.
Why are they racing at Bowman Gray?
Think of it as NASCAR's Field of Dreams game, a tribute to the roots of the sport. NASCAR proved it could have a race on a quarter-mile track with the last three Clash events on a temporary track built inside the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
While the Clash in Los Angeles was designed to generate new fans and was filled with musical acts, this race carries an old-school NASCAR vibe.
The race certainly will touch the heart of those yearning for years past. Team owner Richard Childress sold peanuts and popcorn at the track as a kid.
"There's something about Bowman Gray that brings out the worst in people — or the best," said Wood Brothers Racing co-owner Eddie Wood, who saw his father, Glen Wood, win races at the track in the 1960s. "You can say it either way you want it, but I think everybody is really amped up about doing well there."
What improvements were made to the facility?
NASCAR had to improve the catch fence and put in SAFER (steel-and-foam energy reduction) barriers. But instead of making the barriers nice and smooth in the turn, NASCAR tried to keep the character of the imperfectly shaped guard rail that was once there.
The walls in Turns 3 and 4 pinch into the track a little bit, making it narrow like it was previously with Turn 3 and more of a funnel.
They also added new permanent LED lighting and will need to have some temporary lighting brought in for the event.
There will be an expected sellout crowd of between 18,000 and 20,000 fans.
What is the format?
There are 39 entries, and the track is too small to have 39 Cup cars on it at one time. The 39 cars will be split into three groups and each group will get two practice sessions of eight minutes apiece on Saturday night. Then, each group will be split into two groups, and the drivers will have one final four-minute practice session where their best lap will set the lineups for the heat races.
There will be four heats — three with 10 cars, one with nine cars — of 25 laps apiece Saturday night. The fastest car from qualifying will be on the pole for the first heat, the second-fastest on pole for the second heat and so on.
Only green-flag laps count and there will be no overtime.
The top five in each heat advance to Sunday night's main event. The remaining 19 cars will compete in a 75-lap (only green-flag laps count, no overtime) race on Sunday, with the top-two cars advancing to the main event. Of the 17 cars remaining, the competitor who had the highest driver points from the 2024 season will get the 23rd and final spot in the main event.
The winner of the first heat will be on the pole for the main event, the winner of the second heat on the front row, the winners of the third and fourth heats will comprise Row 2 and so on. The main event will be 200 laps. Only green-flag laps count. There will be a halftime break after 100 laps.
Who has raced there?
The eight drivers entered who have experience in stock cars at the track: Alex Bowman, William Byron, Cole Custer, Chase Elliott, Justin Haley, Kyle Larson, Daniel Suarez and Bubba Wallace,
"It's been so long since I've been there. Those [East] races were years ago. I don't really think that's going to help," Elliott said. "The last few years having been at the Coliseum, I know it's going to be different for sure, but I do think there will be some similarities in just a track of that size and how quick things happen."
Four drivers have raced modifieds at the track: Ryan Preece and Cody Ware are full-time Cup drivers who have a few starts here, while two of Bowman Gray's most notable and famous modified champions and rivals, Tim Brown and Burt Myers, have secured rides for the Clash.
"Racing at the stadium is hard," said Brown, who is a mechanic in the Rick Ware Racing shop and has worked on the car that he will race. "It's going to be more difficult than even racing at the Coliseum in L.A., just because of the asphalt difference and the weather, the temperature difference.
"But it's going to be the same for everybody. I think the bottom will definitely be dominant and you just have to have your car turning really good in the center and have plenty of forward drive and you'll be fine."
Will it rain … or snow?
Temperatures will be in the 40s Saturday night and could dip into the high-30s Sunday night, according to FOX Weather.
But the good news? There's less than a 10 percent chance of rain.

NASCAR's 2026 schedule shake-up: New street race, Chicagoland's return, and more
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- NASCAR in 2026 will race on a new street course in San Diego, return Chicagoland Speedway to the schedule, move the All-Star race to Dover, Delaware, and end its 38-race season back at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The schedule released Wednesday includes two off weekends on a calendar that stretches from February to November. It begins with the exhibition Clash on Feb. 1 at Bowman-Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem for the second consecutive year, with the season-opening Daytona 500 to follow on Feb. 15. The season ends Nov. 8 in Florida at Homestead, which hosted the championship-deciding finale for 18 consecutive years before NASCAR shifted it to Phoenix Raceway in 2020. The race at Phoenix was given a different date in the playoffs and NASCAR is expected to rotate the season finale to various venues in ensuing years. Chicagoland is reopening after a six-year hiatus and a switch back to the track located in suburban Joliet after three seasons on a temporary street circuit in downtown Chicago. The San Diego event will be held on a military base in Coronado. To add Chicagoland and San Diego, NASCAR dropped the Chicago street race and will not return to Mexico City, where it held the first international Cup Series points race since the 1950s. A return to Mexico City in 2026 became difficult to schedule because of soccer's World Cup. NASCAR also moved Watkins Glen in New York from its traditional August date to Mother's Day weekend and the all-star race from North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, to Dover so that North Wilkesboro will be a points-paying Cup race, and New Hampshire lost its playoff race to become the penultimate race of the regular season. Good news, bad news for NASCAR Cup drivers ahead of Daytona regular season finale
Drivers have one last chance to make the playoffs with Saturday's regular season finale at Daytona International Speedway. Two spots remain in the 16-driver playoff field. Tyler Reddick and Alex Bowman hold those spots, but a new winner could knock one of them out of title contention. NBC and Peacock will have the coverage beginning at 7 p.m. ET Saturday. With help from Racing Insights, here is a look at the good news and bad news for Cup drivers and teams heading into Daytona. Dustin Long, 23XI Racing — Good news: Bubba Wallace has three runner-up finishes at Daytona. … Tyler Reddick remains in a playoff spot, holding a 29-point advantage on Alex Bowman. … Reddick was the runner-up in this year's Daytona 500. … Both of rookie Riley Herbst's top-10 finishes in Cup have come at drafting tracks. Bad news: If there is a new winner and Bowman outscores Reddick by 29 points at Daytona, Reddick would fail to make the playoffs a year after reaching the title race. … Reddick placed a season-worst 34th last weekend at Richmond. … Reddick has an average finish of 23.0 at Daytona, his worst among active tracks. … Wallace's 28th-place finish at Richmond last weekend snapped a streak of four consecutive top-10 finishes. Bad news: Dillon has not finished better than 22nd in the five races since his August 2022 win at Daytona. … Busch has led 62 of the 6,351 laps run in Cup this season. … Busch has not led a lap in the last 13 races, the longest streak in his career. Team Penske — Good news: Ryan Blaney has scored five consecutive top-10 finishes. … Blaney ranks second in the series in stage points with 217. … Blaney has scored points in seven consecutive stages. … Austin Cindric's fifth-place finish at Richmond marked his best finish since winning Talladega in late April. … Cindric has three top 10s, including a win, in his last six starts at drafting tracks. … Joey Logano has led in each of the last 13 Cup races at Daytona, which ranks as the third longest streak at Daytona (Richard Petty led 19 races in a row there and Sterling Marlin led 14 races in a row there). … Since 2023, Team Penske has led 33% of the laps run at drafting tracks. With no Chicago Street Race, NASCAR will return to long-dormant Joliet track in 2026
While NASCAR is bypassing the Chicago Street Race next summer, it is filling the void on the schedule with a Cup Series race during July Fourth weekend at the long-dormant Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet. The announcement Wednesday marks the first return for NASCAR to the Joliet track since it was idled in 2019. It also seeks to keep NASCAR momentum alive in the Chicago area after three years of holding the nationally televised street race in Grant Park. 'There is a history and tradition of great NASCAR racing at Chicagoland Speedway, so we look forward to building on the tremendous fan momentum throughout the entire state of Illinois,' Pat Warren, regional vice president of NASCAR, said in a news release. Last month, NASCAR put the Chicago Street Race on hold for 2026 after completing a three-year agreement with the city to turn Grant Park into a temporary urban racetrack, leaving open the door to return on a different date down the road. At the same time, NASCAR announced it would move the street race next summer to San Diego, holding a three-day event at Naval Base Coronado in June. NASCAR said it paused the Chicago Street Race because it needs more time to explore rescheduling the event away from Independence Day and finding ways to speed up the build-out and breakdown of the pop-up racecourse, in response to concerns from the city. That left a gaping July Fourth hole on the racing schedule, which Joliet will now fill, at least in 2026. Launched in 2001, Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet hosted NASCAR's premier racing series for 18 years. But the 1.5-mile oval has essentially been idled since it was acquired in 2019 by NASCAR as part of a $2 billion merger agreement with International Speedway Corp. In 2022, the Joliet track was used as a parking lot for thousands of Ford SUVs built at the Chicago Assembly Plant and awaiting computer chips during the pandemic-era global semiconductor shortage that disrupted auto production. The track was rented out for a motocross event in 2023, but hasn't seen a NASCAR race in six years. That will change next summer. 'This is a fantastic homecoming for Joliet and the entire region,' Joliet Mayor Terry D'Arcy said in the news release. 'Chicagoland Speedway has been a cornerstone of our community for more than two decades, and we couldn't be more excited to welcome NASCAR's top stars back to our backyard.' NASCAR will need to do some work to get the Chicagoland Speedway ready for the Cup Series next summer, but said the track remains in pretty good shape, despite enduring six Chicago winters since its last race. The oval track will represent a sharp departure from the downtown Chicago event. The Chicago Street Race — the first street course event ever produced by NASCAR — featured a 12-turn, 2.2-mile circuit through Grant Park, down DuSable Lake Shore Drive and up Michigan Avenue. During its three-year run, it weathered challenging conditions, including significant rain delays the first two years, and ongoing debates about the benefits for the city. In 2024, the street race generated $128 million in total economic impact and drew 53,036 unique visitors, according to a study commissioned by Choose Chicago, the city's tourism arm. The nationally televised Cup Series race also generated $43.6 million in media value for Chicago, according to a companion report. An economic impact study for 2025 is forthcoming, according to NASCAR While attendance figures for the 2025 event have yet to be released, TV ratings for the Cup Series Grant Park 165 on July 6 were down for the third consecutive year, averaging 2.1 million viewers on cable channel TNT, according to Nielsen. Next summer's nationally televised Cup Series race on TNT will put that spotlight back on Joliet. 'The economic impact and excitement this brings to our city is tremendous, and celebrating America's birthday with some of the best racing in the world right here in Joliet is something special that our residents and visitors will never forget,' D'Arcy said in the news release.
