Kamal files papers for RS polls, declares Rs 305 crore assets
CHENNAI: Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan has declared assets worth Rs 305.55 crore (Rs 245.86 crore worth of movable assets and Rs 59.69 crore in immovable assets) in his nomination papers filed for the Rajya Sabha polls on Friday. His overall liability, however, has remained the same at Rs 49 crore over the last four years.
Kamal's income as per his tax returns for 2023-2024 was Rs 78.9 crore, up from Rs 22.1 crore in 2019-2020. Value of his movable assets has gone up to Rs 59.69 crore, a rise of nearly Rs 15 crore from Rs 45.09 crore reported in 2021. The value of his immovable assets stands at Rs 245.86 crore, up from Rs 131.84 crore in 2021. He owns four commercial buildings – two in Alwarpet, one in Uthandi, and another one in Sholinganallur –- which have a combined approximate market value of Rs 111.1 crore. He also owns agricultural land in Vilpatti village in Dindigul valued at Rs 22.24 crore.
He had also upgraded his BMW 730 LD car purchased in 2015 and Lexus Lx 570 Lanson in 2018 to newer vehicles from the same brand. He has also added a Mercedes Benz to his line-up of luxury cars in four years since 2021.
Kamal continues to list his profession as an 'artist' and his educational qualification as Class 8 from Sir M Ct. Muthiah Chettiar Boys Higher Secondary School, Purasawalkam.

Pujari assures action against sand mafia
Bhubaneswar: Revenue minister Suresh Pujari on Saturday said Odisha would not be allowed to follow the lawless path in sand operations like it is in Bihar and West Bengal, while responding to the recent assault of an additional tehsildar in Kaptipada block, Mayurbhanj district, by the sand mafia. He promised stringent action against the sand mafia regardless of their connections, while speaking to mediapersons here on Saturday. "The Kaptipada incident represents a serious escalation in conflict between law enforcement and the sand mafia. The attack on officers performing their enforcement duties is similar to Bihar and West Bengal, where criminals challenge state authority. The administration's commitment in curbing illegal sand trafficking faces violent resistance from well-organised criminal networks. We pledged decisive action against both the direct perpetrators and their masterminds," said Pujari. This zero-tolerance approach signals a strong message that such attacks on govt officials will not be tolerated. The incident serves as a watershed moment in the ongoing battle against illegal sand mining operations, officials said. Majhi, based on intelligence reports, went to inspect sand being lifted illegally using excavators. When he opposed it, he was attacked. Police said the miscreants, mostly goons of the sand mafia, intercepted Majhi's car and tried to stop him from venturing into the sand lifting site in the river bed. Pujari announced free sand provision for Pradhan Mantri Awas beneficiaries, with a draft standard operating procedure (SOP) already in preparation to streamline the process. "The most important thing is how to facilitate the supply of sand at low cost to the lower middle class and poor. We will introduce the provision of issuing permits to beneficiaries of PM Awas to lift at least two tractor fulls of sand for free for construction of houses. The PM Awas will be free from the sand cost burden," Pujari told reporters. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty commented that the minister's statements are merely an attempt to whitewash the obvious collusion between administration officials and the mining mafia. "Instead of taking concrete action, the minister has limited himself to making empty rhetoric," he said. MU revokes paid maternity leave for guest faculty and temporary staff
Mangaluru: In a cost-cutting move, Mangalore University (MU) has revoked paid maternity leave for guest faculty and temporary non-teaching staff. The syndicate granted four months of paid leave in July 2022, but the benefit was discontinued last month without alternative provisions. Judith Mendonca, a syndicate member who proposed scrapping the policy, stated that guest faculty working under MU are paid a substantial amount of compensation compared to other state universities in Karnataka. The monthly salary is around Rs 40,000. Despite paying such a huge amount, their workload is minimal. There are guest faculty appointed for courses with fewer than 10 students. They have a maximum of three hours of work per day. In this scenario, it is an absolute financial burden on MU to offer the temporary staff such benefits. Therefore, MU has decided to withdraw and scrap the rule from May 2025 with immediate effect," explained Mendonca. The decision to offer paid maternity leave was taken after former syndicate member Ramesh K tabled the proposal. He informed that one of the guest faculty working in Kodagu district, which was earlier under MU, requested that all women guest lecturers be considered for paid maternity leave. No guest faculty or temporary staff under MU were eligible for the facility, even though many worked for more than a decade. The aim was to give them relief as they have no pay until they return to work.
