Westmoreland Museum of American Art ringing in spring with 'Art in Bloom' exhibit
Spring has sprung at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, and for the next week, special floral arrangements will not only be accenting their galleries but taking center stage.
While spring colors are just starting to bud outdoors in the Pittsburgh region, indoors at the Westmoreland Museum, flowers and art are in bloom. This is thanks to 20 local florists who have made floral arrangements that coincide with specific art and paintings around the museum.
The exhibit is called 'Art in Bloom' and is back for its second year at the museum.
Claire Ertl, the museum's marketing director, says this exhibit was brought back for a second year after its radiant success last year. She says they intend to have 'Art in Bloom' at the museum each spring.
"Coming to the museum itself is inspirational," Ertl said. "But having just this added feature of the flowers and it being the beginning of spring, it's just a great tradition that I think we have started here. And I think the community really embraced it as something to look to in the spring season."
While many artists' floral works are on display, one local artist, JD Peterson, was at the museum on Wednesday, meeting guests and telling them about her unique arrangement of calla lilies, which is paired with a painting by Mildred Thompson called 'String Theory.'
"You really have to think about how to interpret this," said Peterson. "For example, (String Theory) is a two-dimensional piece of art, but you have to bring it to life in three dimensions. And I just loved working with the texture, the color, the line, and the shape, and I am just thrilled to have this piece."
Admission to 'Art in Bloom' is $10 for the public and free to museum members. The flowers will only be on display through Sunday, March 30.

One of Swindon's biggest festivals, which made its comeback last year, is preparing to hit the streets again with over 30 events. The Old Town Arts Festival had been a key event on Swindon's calendar for more than 24 years, but it was put on hold in 2020 when the world entered a global pandemic. The festival will kick off at the start of June with a family fun day in Town Gardens offering food, drink, live music, workshops, market stalls and more. Four Tampa women head to France to dance in D-Day memorial parade
Featured video is from some local members of the team visiting the BLOOM studio. PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (BLOOM) — Four women from the Tampa Bay area are among a group of American dancers traveling to Normandy, France, to perform during the 80th anniversary of D-Day, honoring the Allied forces' pivotal World War II landing. Sharon Dindal, Kimberly Krege Florio, Eileen Husselbaugh, and Vicki Franklin, all members of America's Golden Dream Dancers, will take part in a series of commemorative events June 5–8. The group, composed of 22 dancers between the ages of 50 and 70 from across four states, has been invited by Historic Programs to serve as official U.S. representatives during the ceremonies. Their itinerary includes a performance in the Parade of Liberation through Sainte-Mère-Église, where they will dance to Barry Manilow's 'Jump Shout Boogie,' a Broadway-style showcase translated into both French and English, and a lyrical tribute at Utah Beach following a memorial service. Experiencing the magic of America's Golden Dream Dancers 'Our invitation is a reflection of our commitment to community, our professionalism, and our dedication to honoring veterans,' said the group in a statement. 'It's a privilege to represent our country on such a historic occasion.' Following the Normandy events, the dancers are also scheduled to perform in Paris, continuing their international tribute. The Tampa Bay quartet joined the Golden Dream Dancers last year and have since performed aboard two Royal Caribbean cruise ships. Their upcoming trip marks their most high-profile appearance yet. The performances are part of the International Salute to Liberation organized by the D-Day Commemoration Committee, honoring those who fought in World War II and marking eight decades since victory in Europe.
