Third firm offers ferry service in Channel Islands

BBC News12-02-2025

The Channel Islands is set to be served by a third ferry firm after operator Islands Unlimited published its inter-island summer schedule. It follows a decision by Jersey and Guernsey's governments to choose different ferry firms to operate its sea links for the next 15 years.Jersey's government opted for Danish firm DFDS, while Guernsey chose to stay with Condor - both have indicated they plan to operate limited services between the islands and timetables have not yet been published. Islands Unlimited manager director Chad Murray said: "We are excited that we will be offering a daily inter-island foot passenger service this summer."
Mr Murray said a standard adult return fare with his firm would be priced at about £67. The firm's schedule offers daily services between Guernsey and Jersey, running from 07:00 GMT until 19:45 on weekdays (other than Tuesdays when it stops at 16:45).It will also run from 07:00 until 21:45 at weekends. Mr Murray said the new summer schedule would be subject to "some final discussions" with Ports of Jersey. The firm's boss said: "We want to meet the needs of the islanders, as well as visitors. "Following stakeholder engagement, this offers the best fit for the communities, commuters, local business, sport and event, as well as offering great day-trips for visitors to support tourism."Unlimited Islands has said its service could start in June.
'We are delighted'
Chairman of the Guernsey Tourism Partnership, Ant Ford-Parker, said: "We are delighted that this bold initiative is nearing completion. "The implications for tourism as well as the local communities, are enormous. We wish them every success."The BBC has approached The States of Guernsey and the Jersey Government for comment.

Dundee holidaymaker captures dramatic moment Mount Etna eruption began

A Dundee man has captured the dramatic eruption of Mount Etna, which sent a huge cloud of ash into the sky. Tom Ingram, 69, is on holiday on the Italian island of Sicily. So he was perfectly placed to view the beginning of the volcanic eruption on Monday. Large plumes of grey ash and white smoke were clearly visible as it continued. Etna is one of the world's most active volcanoes and regularly erupts – most recently in February. Tom and his wife, Gail, arrived on the Island on Friday for a holiday to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. The couple were enjoying a boat trip near Taormina, around 30 miles from Mount Etna, when Tom captured the dramatic events as they unfolded. Tom describes the volcano eruption as 'quite spectacular'. He said: 'At first we could see a white cloud of smoke blowing out over the horizon, which didn't look too dramatic. 'However, once the boat had made it around the headland, it was clear things had changed dramatically.' Tom's images capture huge clouds of ash billowing up into the sky. He told The Courier: 'It was quite spectacular to watch. 'We didn't hear any sound from the eruption as the wind was blowing from left to right as we watched, so may have carried the sound away from us.' Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (NIGV) has been closely monitoring events at Mount Etna. It said it first noted changes to the volcano's activity at 12.39am local time (10.39pm GMT). The full eruption took place later in the morning though. NIGV has issued a 'code red' aviation warning advising that a significant volume of ash was likely to be dispersed into the atmosphere. However, disruption on the ground in the immediate vicinity of Etna is thought to be minimal at present.

Co-owner John Textor, who has a 43 per cent stake in Palace, owns French club Lyon, who also qualified for the Europa League. Uefa forbids clubs with the same owners from competing in the same competitions. Unfortunately for Palace that could mean they will not be allowed to drop into the Conference League either, as Textor has a stake in Danish side Bronby. Now Crystal Palace chiefs are set to meet with Uefa in Switzerland where they hope to iron out any issues. The south London club will argue their case by pointing out no relationship exists between them and Lyon, according to the Daily Mail. Textor also does not possess sole decision-making power at Selhurst Park - he only holds 25 per cent of voting rights alongside chairman Steve Parish and other partners Josh Harris and David Blitzer.
