Casey Schmitt's first grand slam lifts Giants past Dodgers
June 14 - Casey Schmitt hit his first career grand slam and the visiting San Francisco Giants earned a 6-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday as the longtime rivals met for the first time this season.
San Francisco right-hander Logan Webb (6-5) gave up two runs on two hits over seven innings as the Giants moved into a tie with the Dodgers atop the National League West. He struck out four and walked three.
Tyler Rogers and Ryan Walker each followed with a hitless inning.
Schmitt had made a costly ninth-inning error in the Giants' Tuesday loss to the Colorado Rockies, San Francisco's lone defeat in the past nine games.
Dodgers right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-5) struggled with his control, allowing five runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings with five walks and four strikeouts. Teoscar Hernandez homered and singled for Los Angeles' only two hits.
The first meeting of the season between the teams during the second week of June is the latest it has happened on the schedule since 1999.
The Giants got to Yamamoto early when Willy Adames hit a home run to right-center field as the second batter of the game. After a slow start to the season, Adames has three socked of his eight home runs over the past four games.
The Dodgers got even in the second inning without the aid of a hit. Will Smith walked, went to second on a wild pitch and to third on a Max Muncy groundout. He scored on a shallow fly ball to right from Andy Pages, but only after Giants catcher Andrew Knizner dropped the ball after trying to apply the tag on Smith.
The Giants took charge in the third. Yamamoto loaded the bases on walks to Jung Hoo Lee, Heliot Ramos and Wilmer Flores. With two outs, Schmitt hit his grand slam deep into the seats in left field on a 1-1 splitter, his second home run of the season.
The Dodgers got their first hit off Webb when Hernandez singled in the fourth inning. Their only other hit was Hernandez's home run in the seventh, his 12th on the season.
Knizner hit his first home run of the year in the eighth inning.

Chelsea give clear Club World Cup hint with £100m prize money on the line
Chelsea have jetted out to the United States getting ready to play in the inaugural Club World Cup and Enzo Maresca's men are eager to capture the trophy that offers a game-changing prize fund of £100m Chelsea are hoping the Club World Cup will provide a £100m ticket to glory. The Blues go into the 32 team tournament in the United States having won the trophy in its previous format back in 2022. That was under former owner Roman Abramovich when the club enjoyed a glorious time of major trophies and big stars. Chelsea 's current joint owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali have gone in a different direction with young players to build slowly but with strong foundations. They have tried to recruit Europe's best young talent and also the most skilful players from around the world to signal long-term success. But the prize money on offer in the Club World Cup this summer - £97m for the winners in a total pool of £775m - would be a game-changer for a team like Chelsea. They have already recruited Mike Penders, Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo and Liam Delap and put them straight into their 28 man squad for the Club World Cup. That has meant they have left Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix at home while Wesley Fofana will also remain at Stamford Bridge to carry on his rehabilitation from injury. But while Chelsea remain committed to their long-term strategy of young players, they also know that winning the biggest trophies will help recruit more stars and also help pay for them. Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca guided the club into next season's Champions League and also won the Europa Conference League. That has underlined Chelsea's faith in their manager and the way he is building for the long-term future and his ability to harness young players. It would also allow them to go big again having spent in excess of £100m each on Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. That is why Chelsea are determined to take their tournament seriously as they prepare to kick off against Los Angeles in Atlanta next Tuesday. MLS side LAFC contain serial winners in the form of French World Cup heroes Hugo Lloris and striker Olivier Giroud, with the latter set to face his old club in this one. Their other Group games see them face Flamengo and ES Tunis and new signing, Portugal under-21 star Essugo, is relishing the chance to make history. Essugo agreed an £18.5m deal in March and he arrived in time for the Club World Cup with great memories of watching Chelsea's glory days under Jose Mourinho and also the Champions League in 2021 when Thomas Tuchel lifted the trophy. He added: 'The first memories I have were from when Mourinho was here in 2015. But the most recent memory is the Champions League final the club won, which fittingly took place in Porto. I remember that well, and generally some of the great players that have played here. "I want to win as much as possible, as many titles as possible. Obviously, I want to win the Champions League, but also the Premier League because it's very difficult. I want to win titles, play as much as possible at Chelsea and be part of the club's history." NFL player compares his Achilles tear to 'illegal' deportations in bizarre remarks about LA protests
Dolphins guard James Daniels brought up the 'illegal' mass deportations occurring in the United States as he downplayed the Achilles injury he is recovering from. Daniels, who joined the Dolphins this offseason, is working his way back from an Achilles injury suffered last fall while he was with the Steelers. And when asked about his own challenges, he attempted to put things in perspective as he discussed the immigration raids in Los Angeles. 'I mean, I realize I'm in a great position,' he told reporters. 'You know, Achilles, yes it's unfortunate, but there are people in way worse positions, you know.' 'I think, like especially with what's happening in [ Los Angeles ], you know like people's parents, people's grandparents are being deported illegally, you know. 'Like, I don't have to worry about my mom getting deported or my dad getting deported or my wife getting deported, you know. And I've played a long time. I've made decent money. And so, there's a lot bigger issues that people have on their plate. So for me, going through an Achilles injury is pretty easy.' Daniels is entering his eighth year in the NFL after stints with the Bears and Steelers. He signed a three-year, $24million deal with Miami this offseason and has over $58million in career earnings, per Spotrac. His comments come amid a week of mass deportations and subsequent protests in Los Angeles, with President Trump continuing his stern focus on immigration. The president even deployed troops to the area as some rioters have lit cars on fire. However, the Trump administration later pumped the brakes on its mass deportation agenda, telling ICE officials to pause raids on farms, hotels and restaurants, The significant update was reported by the New York Times, who cited an internal email and three US officials familiar with the situation. Trump also acknowledged on his Truth Social platform hat some of the deportations he's ordered has hurt industries in agricultural, hospitality and food sectors. 'Our great Farmers and people in the Hotel and Leisure business have been stating that our very aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace,' he said in a Truth Social post on Thursday morning. 'We must protect our Farmers, but get the CRIMINALS OUT OF THE USA. Changes are coming!' he added. Trump has received criticism in certain corners for his immigration crackdowns, though a large portion of Americans are on board with his policies. A CBS News/YouGov poll conducted last week found that a 55 percent majority liked the goal's of Trump's deportation program, while 44 percent said they liked how he was approaching it.

Hollywood star Rob Schneider calls Riley Gaines 'an American hero' after Simone Biles trans athlete feud
Riley Gaines has received support from Hollywood after her Simone Biles feud about trans athletes - for which the Olympian issued an apology for this week. Actor and comedian Rob Schneider, best known for his work with Adam Sandler, called Gaines 'an American hero', days after she was branded 'truly sick' by Biles for her stance on trans athletes before the Olympian compared her appearance to a man. Earlier in the week, after Biles apologized, it emerged USA Gymnastics had deleted guidance on its website over trans athletes competing in women's events 'to assess compliance with the current legal landscape', as per Fox. The news caught 61-year-old Schneider's attention, who commented: 'I am proud to call Riley Gaines my biological female friend. And an American hero of all girls everywhere!' Schneider is a Donald Trump supporter and the President made the issue of trans athletes a key part of his work on the campaign trail last year. After returning to the White Hours, he signed an executive order to ban trasngender women competing in female sports with Gaines in attendance. The seven-time Olympic gold medalist Biles eventually said sorry this week for getting personal in her feud with Gaines, who is a host for OutKick. After initially calling her 'truly sick' for campaigning against trans athletes and accusing her of making sports less safe for them, Biles then got personal when she said to Gaines on X: 'Bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male.' Biles also taunted Gaines over a race where she finished fifth, alongside trans athlete Lia Thomas, in her first post last week, saying: 'You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser.' Four days later, Biles issued a public apology to Gaines on the platform. 'I wanted to follow up from my last tweets,' she wrote. 'I've always believed competitive equity & inclusivity are both essential in sport. 'The current system doesn't adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges, and it didn't help for me to get personal with Riley, which I apologize for. 'These are sensitive, complicated issues that I truly don't have the answers or solutions to, but I believe it starts with empathy and respect.' Her husband Jonathan Owens, an NFL player for the Chicago Bears, also shared the statement on his own Instagram. Gaines responded: 'I accept Simone's apology for the personal attacks including the ones where she body-shamed me. I know she knows what this feels like. She's still the greatest female gymnast of all time.' In her lengthy response, she hinted Biles should support Trump's efforts to keep trans athletes away from women's sports, adding: 'I agree with you that the blame is on the lawmakers and leaders at the top. 'That's why I joined Donald Trump at the signing of his Executive Order. I didn't see you there or championing this effort with your platform. 'Women's sports can't be used as an excuse for girl's to center the feelings and validation of men and boys. 'I welcome you to the fight to support fair sports and a future for female athletes. Little girls deserve the same shot to achieve that you had.' Gaines caught Biles' eye by mocking the Minnesota state softball champions Champlin Park, who won their competition with a dominant trans pitcher in Marissa Rothenberger. She retweeted a picture of a team celebration on X, writing: 'Comments off lol. To be expected when your star player is a boy.'
