Sporting president issues shock Viktor Gyokeres statement amid transfer uncertainty
Sporting president Frederico Varandas has issued an extraordinary statement regarding the future of Viktor Gyokeres.
According to reports in Portugal, the 27-year-old Swede believes he has a deal with his current employers that will let him depart the Jose Alvalade Stadium should an offer of €60million plus €10m (£58m) arrive.
That, however, has now been publicly disregarded by Sporting chief Varandas, which has reportedly left Gyokeres feeling 'furious' that a promise to him made at the beginning of the season has been broken.
After 'days' of speculation, Varandas has moved to clarify the club's stance and asking price for Gyokeres, and taken aim at the player's agent.
Threats, blackmail and insults do not work with me. And I can guarantee one thing: Viktor will not leave for €60m plus €10m
Sporting president Frederico Varandas
"I tried to take three days off, I came back yesterday,' he said, via Portuguese journalist Sebastiao Sousa-Pinto. 'I saw so much information and counter-information that it is only fair to come and explain the process.
'It started last year, when the season ended and Sporting became national champions. During the transfer market we saw that he was going to stay because there was no offer. The agent spoke to us to add some clauses. [Sporting's former sporting director] Hugo Viana, as he always did, and very well, managed the relationship with the agents.
'One of the agent's biggest concerns was whether we would demand the termination clause. Hugo Viana negotiated with the agents over several meetings until the agent demanded the presence of the president. At this meeting, which included the president, the agent and Viana, Gyokeres was not present. He wanted to guarantee certain things.
'And what was agreed? That Sporting would not demand a release clause now. For one reason: he was going to be 27 years old and no player leaves Portugal at 27 for 100 or 90 million.
With this game that the agent is playing, the situation is only getting worse. To date, Sporting have not had an offer for Viktor Gyokeres. Not today or last summer
Sporting president Frederico Varandas
'In that same meeting, the agent wanted to anchor the exit to a value. I said this sentence: 'It's not worth us setting a value because I don't know what will happen in a year's time. I don't know if it will be €40m, €60m or €80m. What I can guarantee is that I will not demand €100m.'
'From then on, I never spoke to the agent again, I never spoke to the player about departures or values. Now I see the agent in the press releasing information.
'I want to make one thing clear: Sporting has common sense and keeps its word.
'Gyokeres scored 63 goals and 10 assists. Fantastic performance. Certainly one of the best players to have ever stepped onto Portuguese turf. And even so, Sporting will not demand the release clause.
'They should know me better by now. Threats, blackmail and insults do not work with me. And I can guarantee one thing: Viktor will not leave for €60m plus €10m. I never promised this.
'With this game that the agent is playing, the situation is only getting worse. To date, Sporting have not had an offer for Viktor Gyokeres. Not today or last summer.
'Viktor Gyokeres is one of the best footballers in the history of Portuguese football, he is a fantastic professional, to date he has had zero offers and has a three-year contract.'

Scouting Club World Cup opponents of Inter Miami, Messi: Al Ahly, Porto, Palmeiras
The casual sports fan may assume that Lionel Messi and his high-profile Inter Miami teammates are locks to advance from a Club World Cup group that includes Al Ahly of Egypt, Porto of Portugal and Palmeiras of Brazil. But soccer fans who follow the international game are fully aware that although Messi's No. 10 pink shirt is the best selling in the world, his team is the underdog against three Group A opponents that have far more history and trophies than a 6-year-old MLS club. Inter Miami kicks off the $1 billion tournament on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium against Al Ahly, the highest-ranked African team in the world, a team that won that region's Champions League three of the past four years and has racked up 155 trophies over its 118-year history. Next up for the Miami is 30-time Portuguese champion Porto in Atlanta on June 19 and the final group game is June 23 back at Hard Rock Stadium against Brazilian power Palmeiras, the Sao Paulo side that won Brazil's Serie A in 2022 and 2023, the Copa do Brasil in 2020 and two successive Copa Libertadores in 2020 and 2021. Among the top players on Palmeiras' roster is 18-year-old phenom Estavao, who is headed to Chelsea for a $68 million transfer fee. According to the Opta Power Rankings, Porto is No. 56 in the world, Palmeiras No. 76, Al Ahly No. 98 and Inter Miami No. 146. Let's take a closer look at who Messi and his Inter Miami teammates will be facing over the next few weeks… Al Ahly steeped in history Spanish coach Jose Riveiro makes his Al Ahly debut in the Club World Cup opener, and he will be under pressure from the passionate and demanding Red Devils fans, who are used to winning and pack 75,000-seat Cairo International Stadium for home matches. Al Ahly has won 45 Egyptian Premier League titles, 39 Egypt Cup titles and 15 Egyptian Super Cups, making it the most successful club in Africa. The club's Instagram account has 12 million followers, and most of its players have more than a million followers, led by Trezeguet by 9.7 million. 'When you are in a Club World Cup, you are going to see the best teams in the world, and we landed a group that maybe in the names of the clubs is not as intimidating as others, but I can tell you that based on performance, it is a difficult group,' said Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano. 'I have seen Al Ahly in the Intercontinental Cup, Porto and Palmeiras we know much better because we have seen them often. Our goal is to arrive at the tournament in the best form possible and try to win the first game.' Inter Miami features former Barcelona teammates Messi, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba, who is injured and questionable for Saturday's game. Al Ahly also boasts elite players such as ex-Aston Villa forward Mahmoud Trézéguet, Emam Ashour, Wessam Abou Ali, and Momamad Hanu. The Egyptian team has been in South Florida for more than a week, training at Nova Southeastern University and tuned up for the Club World Cup with a friendly against Mexican team Pachuca on Sunday, losing 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 tie. Porto seeks redemption The Club World Cup is redemption time for Porto, an opportunity to save face after finishing the Primeira Liga in third place for the second year in a row. The Dragons finished nine points behind second-place Benfica and 11 points behind winner Sporting. The last time they finished below top two in successive seasons was in 1976 and 1977. Porto, a historic club that was founded in 1893 and has never been relegated, was eliminated by Roma in the first knockout round of the Europa League this year, and lost in the Round of 32 of the Taca de Portugal (Portugal's FA Cup) against Moreirense and the semi-finals of the Taca da Liga (League Cup). Coach Martin Anselmi, who was previously at Mexican club Cruz Azul, leads a team that features talented goalkeeper Diogo Costa and Spanish striker in Samu Aghehowa, who scored 25 goals this season. Other players to watch include forward Pepe and midfielder Stephen Eustaquio. Porto is the most decorated Portuguese team in international competitions, with seven trophies. They won the European Cup/UEFA Champions League in 1987 and 2004, the UEFA Cup/Europa League in 2003 and 2011, the UEFA Super Cup in 1987, and the Intercontinental Cup in 1987 and 2004. Palmeiras teen Estavao takes center stage One of the most exciting young players in the world is 18-year-old Brazilian winger Estevao, so it is no surprise that Inter Miami's game against Palmeiras was drawing higher ticket prices than the opener against Al Ahly. South Florida's large Brazilian community will get a chance to see the teen phenom in person before he heads to England to play for Chelsea, which reportedly paid a $39.3 million transfer fee with another $26.6 million in performance-based incentives. He made his club debut at age 16 and last season scored 13 goals with nine assists. Asked about the opportunity to face Messi, Estevao said in a interview: 'I am very excited. I'll be playing against one of the greatest football players in history, so being on the pitch with him will be an incredible and unforgettable experience for me. 'It's a great feeling to be playing in a tournament like this and to know that Palmeiras is among the best clubs in the world. It's great not only for me, but for everyone playing. Expectations are high, and the tournament will also be a great learning experience since we'll be facing not just South American clubs, but also European ones.' Other Palmeiras players to watch include forward Vitor Roque, midfielder Raphael Veiga, midfielder Richard Ríos and forward Facundo Torres. Palmeiras is Brazil's most successful domestic club with a record 12 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, four Copas do Brasil, one Copa dos Campeões, and one Supercopa do Brasil. The Brazilian Serie A season kicked off in March and ends in December. Palmeiras is currently in fourth place and advanced to the Copa Libertadores Round of 16, where it will play Unversitario of Peru in August.

Duplantis dominates pole vault at Oslo Diamond League
Armand 'Mondo' Duplantis dominated the men's pole vault at the Diamond League meet in Oslo on Thursday in another stellar display. "I am very satisfied," said Duplantis after winning with a new meet record of 6.15 metres. Advertisement "To get a stadium record here was in my plans after a few visits here with difficult conditions. "It was great to finally get the right conditions tonight." The US-born Swede remains head and shoulders above the rest, having bettered his own world record to 6.27m in February on the back of a 2024 season when he not only won Olympic gold but also broke the world record three times. Duplantis has also registered the 11 highest jumps in the history of the sport, improving the world record one centimetre at a time from 6.17 to 6.27. He is the undisputed king of the event and was also named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for 2024. Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt is the only track and field athlete to have previously won the award. Advertisement While the world's top eight competed in Oslo, none proved to be anywhere near Duplantis' level. Duplantis came in at 5.62m, but three of the 10-strong field bombed out: home hope Sondre Guttormsen, Belgium's Ben Broeders and Ernest John Obiena of the Philippines. The Swede skipped 5.72m along with Greece's Emmanouil Karalis, but another trio of vaulters failed to clear the mark: American Sam Kendricks, Dutchman Menno Vloon and Turkey's Ersu Sasma. France's 2012 Olympic gold medallist Renaud Lavillenie snuck through on his last attempt, but promptly withdrew from competition. Advertisement Duplantis and Karalis cleared 5.82m at their first time of asking, but it proved a height too far for Australian Kurtis Marschall. That left just Duplantis and his Greek rival in the competition, but the latter had three failed efforts at 5.92m after the Swede had gone clear. That left just Duplantis and the bar was raised to 6.03m, 1cm more than the meet record he set in 2022. He needed three attempts, but did it on the third to wild applause from the 15,000-strong crowd at the Bislett Stadium. The bar went up to 6.15m and he passed on the second go, but called it a night as temperatures dipped in Oslo. Advertisement "It did get cooler so that was why I stopped jumping," he said. "On Sunday in Stockholm it would be an absolute dream to break the world record. In fact I could retire if I do! At the moment the forecast is good for Sunday and I am feeling good, I am in good shape and tonight shows I am jumping well so who knows, it may be possible. "I need to build on tonight and get ready now for the big one." Duplantis has now competed in 40 Diamond League meetings since 2020 and lost only four times, making him one of the series' most extraordinary serial winners. lp/jc

Novo Banco's shareholders change bylaws for possible IPO, sources say
By Sergio Goncalves LISBON (Reuters) -Shareholders of Portugal's Novo Banco on Wednesday approved key changes to its bylaws that would allow the lender to go ahead with a public listing, according to three sources with knowledge of the matter. The statutory change approved at a general meeting of shareholders would only become effective if an initial public offering (IPO) goes ahead, one source said. Two other sources confirmed the approval of the changes. Novo Banco, which is Portugal's fourth-largest bank and is 75%-owned by U.S. private equity fund Lone Star, in February began preparations for an IPO, but a full sale has not been ruled out. The first source said the so-called dual track process, in which sellers typically seek to build competitive tension between an IPO and a full sale to achieve the best price, remains on the table. CEO Mark Bourke has long advocated for an IPO, which would keep the lender independent, and said a month ago that it was targeting either June or September, depending on the markets and the final go-ahead from shareholders. Novo Banco was created in 2014 from the collapsed BES after a state bailout, with Lone Star buying its stake in 2017. The resolution fund, which is financed by Portugal's banks, holds 13.54% and the Portuguese state holds the remaining 11.46%. Novo Banco, Lone Star, the resolution fund and the finance ministry, which manages the state's stake, declined to comment. Sources told Reuters in September that Novo Banco could be worth about 5 billion euros ($5.69 billion) after it completed a turnaround, which involved focusing solely on Portugal and becoming profitable.
