Jeopardy! fans left polarized as contestant wins because of shock family link to final clue
Jeopardy! fans were left sharply polarized when contestant Emily Croke won thanks to an astonishing family link to the final clue.
The prompt was: 'In 1896, the Vassar-educated wife of this man wrote: "Thousands of dollars may be paid for a copy of Shakespeare."'
Emily was able to correctly deduce the answer, writing: 'Who is Folger?' and walking away from the show with $13,201 in prize money.
However she then divisively revealed that Emily Folger, who wrote the line in the prompt, 'was my great, great, great aunt Emily.'
Host Ken Jennings was bowled over, asking: 'Emily Folger, the one we mentioned in the clue, is the person you, Emily Croke are named after?' to which she said: 'Yeah.'
When a clip of the moment was posted to Instagram, fans leapt into the comments to share their opinions, with some feeling there was 'nothing wrong' with the 'cool' and 'amazing coincidence' as others regarded the result as 'rigged' and 'not fair.'
'Her family was pulling for her *spooky voice* from beyond the grave. So cool!!' wrote one Jeopardy! watcher who clearly supported Emily.
'I love Slumdog Millionaire moments,' said another, a third wrote: 'How fitting! That's so lucky AND she played so well,' and a fourth said: 'Synchronicity and serendipity!'
'What are the odds of that happening?' marveled a viewer as another gushed: 'Ancestral power right there! You just saw it in her smile! So cool!'
'Nothing wrong here,' a fan insisted. 'Good for her for knowing that! That's how you win trivia, know things others don't. How many people don't care to find out things about their family one or two generations back, let alone this far back!'
'Happy to have known it without any connection!!' boasted another member of the viewing public: 'Well, other than I love Shakespeare!!!'
Others wrote: 'Wow, how cool is that!!,' referring to Emily's stroke of luck as the 'most amazing coincidence in the history of Jeopardy.'
Meanwhile a number of audience members were rather less impressed with Emily's victory, maintaining that the family ties meant the result was not entirely above board.
Making reference to a 1994 film about a television competition that was fixed behind the scenes, one wrote: 'Anyone else ever seen the movie Quiz Show?'
Fans leapt into the comments to share their opinions, with some feeling there was 'nothing wrong' with the 'cool' and 'amazing coincidence' as others regarded the result as 'rigged'
'How is anyone not a family member supposed to deduce the correct reply?' demanded another commenter. 'What am I missing? Is the library at Vassar named for Folger, I wonder. Off to find out, later yall.'
None of the libraries at Vassar College is named after the Folger family, although there is a Folger Shakespeare Library on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
'Nepo babies keep winning,' sighed one fan, another groused: 'Not fair. She cheated,' and another quipped: 'Rigged,' with a crying laughing emoji.

Zohran Mamdani's wife Rama Duwaji is an animator, illustrator and ceramicist. And they met on Hinge
Rama Duwaji's Election Day post on Instagram was only four words long, but said all it needed to say: 'couldn't possibly be prouder.' It was accompanied by a photo-booth strip of happy poses with her husband, Zohran Mamdani, and a voting selfie that would presage a momentous night: The 33-year-old state assemblyman would stun the political world — and opponent Andrew Cuomo — with his success in the race for the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor. While the ultimate outcome has yet to be confirmed by a ranked choice count, many across the country woke up Wednesday eager to learn more both about Mamdani, a self-described democratic socialist who's now poised to be the nominee, and also about Duwaji, an animator and illustrator originally from Damascus, Syria, according to her Instagram bio. Mamdani kissed her hand during his victory speech to supporters, thanking 'my incredible wife.' In her art career, Duwaji has worked with The New Yorker, The Washington Post, the BBC, Apple, Spotify, VICE and the Tate Modern museum in London, among others, according to one bio page. 'Using drawn portraiture and movement, Rama examines the nuances of sisterhood and communal experiences,' it says. Duwaji also enjoys taking a break from her tech-based art to create her own ceramics, particularly illustrated plates in blue and white. And there's one very contemporary (and much-mentioned) fact that's emerged about the couple: They met on Hinge, the dating app. 'I met my wife on Hinge so there is still hope in those dating apps,' Mamdani said, laughing, on a recent episode of The Bulwark podcast. About six weeks ago the candidate posted a romantic set of photos showing the couple on their wedding day at the city clerk's office earlier this year. The lead photo was a black-and-white shot on the New York subway, specifically at Union Square in Manhattan. The smiling couple held onto a pole, Duwaji dressed in a white dress and boots and holding a bouquet, as other riders minded their own business. In the accompanying text, Mamdani referred to online harassment the couple had experienced. 'If you take a look at Twitter today, or any day for that matter, you know how vicious politics can be,' he wrote. 'I usually brush it off, whether it's death threats or calls for me to be deported. But it's different when it's about those you love. Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama, at the City Clerk's office. Now, right-wing trolls are trying to make this race — which should be about you — about her.' 'Rama isn't just my wife,' Mamdani added. 'She's an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms. You can critique my views, but not my family.' In an April interview on art and activism, Duwaji was asked if artists had a responsibility to speak out about global issues. 'I'll always quote Nina Simone: 'An artist's duty as far as I'm concerned is to reflect the times,'' she said. 'I believe everyone has a responsibility to speak out against injustice,' she added, 'and art has such an ability to spread it. I don't think everybody has to make political work, but art is inherently political in how it's made, funded, and shared. Even creating art as a refuge from the horrors we see is political to me. It's a reaction to the world around us." On Election Day, Duwaji's mother-in-law, filmmaker Mira Nair, posted a message to her daughter-in-law about art and its importance. 'Darling DIL — Art will flourish in our city in the new day,' Nair wrote, adding a heart emoji.

Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter reveals alternative album cover ‘approved by God' after artwork controversy
POP singer Sabrina Carpenter has announced an alternative album cover 'approved by God' after the original artwork sparked controversy. The Espresso star, 26, stirred up outrage with the image for her forthcoming release, titled Man's Best Friend. 2 2 It was deemed degrading as it showed her on her knees in front of a man pulling her hair. But last night, the US singer shared a black and white photo showing herself holding a man's arm — which will be a second option for fans. Confirming the update, Sabrina wrote on Instagram: 'Here is a new alternate cover approved by God available now on my website.' Despite being liked by 4.7 million fans on social media, Sabrina's original artwork was condemned as 'regressive' by domestic violence charities. While the former Disney Channel star has been praised in the past for 'owning' her sexuality in a feminist way, it seemed her latest display had gone too far for many. One fan on X labelled it 'straight-up Pornhub fantasy'. Nicknamed Polly Pocket by fans because of her tiny 5ft stature, Sabrina's saccharinely sexy stage outfits, which often comprise lacy, pastel underwear, stockings and vintage baby-doll nighties, have been branded Lolita-like in the past.

Khloe Kardashian sparks ridicule as she claims daughter True, 7, and son Tatum, 2, planned her birthday
Khloe Kardashian has praised her two children, seven-year-old True and two-year-old Tatum, for throwing her an early birthday party 'all on their own'. But not everyone is buying. On Tuesday, the reality star was thrown an elaborate early birthday bash featuring festive balloons, a gorgeous cake, and even an appearance by several life-size Care Bears - all apparently arranged by her young party planners and 'incredible team.' 'True and Tatum threw me an early birthday pool Party today! True and Tatum Planned it all On their own with my incredible team. We love @carebears,' she gushed on a colorful Instagram Stories post. On the Reddit channel KWTKsnark, dubious fans mocked Khloe's claims. 'Does she think people are dumb enough and believe that her young children did this "by themselves"?' one skeptical Redditor chimed in. One Redditor facetiously noted: 'My newborn planned a vacation for me as a push present after I gave birth to her, all on her own, it was so sweet. Kinda cringe if your kids only start planning as toddlers tbh.' Another branded the message 'embarrassing.' 'It would've been more convincing if she showed her kids making her a card and gifting her some flowers, all this is so over the top and clearly just a way to promote her popcorn,' they added. Another claimed the 'tired looking floral arrangements' were actually the handiwork of 'exhausted adults.' '"With her team" lol they probably picked out the color of the balloons,' one wrote. '"We gotta make sure mommy's popcorn is at her party!" Sure, Jan,' another posted. Khloe, who officially celebrates her birthday on June 27, gave fans a glimpse at her pool party on her Instagram Stories, which was attended by friends including Star Lash Extension founder Yris Palmer. She gave the kids a shout-out as she shared video of Khloe blowing out the candles to her cupcakes. Redditors weren't buying Khloe's claims about who planned her early birthday party 'Early bday celebration! Cutest party planned by True & Tatum,' she posted. Khloe shares her two children with her ex-boyfriend, Cleveland Cavaliers player Tristan Thompson. The reality star turned popcorn entrepreneur has been feeling the love in the days leading up to her birthday. Not only did she have her pool party, but she was surprised on the set of her podcast Khloe In Wonder Land by her children, nieces, and nephews. True, Tatum, along with their cousins Chicago, Dream, and Psalm, sang Khloe happy birthday as they joined her on set with festive pink balloons. 'This is the best surprise I've ever had in my life,' Khloe said. 'So, this is the most amazing surprise. All of the kiddos surprised me for my birthday, right? 'And, I don't think any of them have even been here and have seen the podcast space in person, so this is very exciting.'
