Teen motorcyclist killed in crash with trailer at traffic lights

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A 19-year-old motorcyclist was killed after a collision with a trailer lorry at a traffic light intersection along Jalan Permatang Pauh here last night.
The incident, which occurred at about 8.20pm, involved a motorcycle travelling from Mak Mandin towards Permatang Pauh.
Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris said the motorcyclist was proceeding through a green light at the junction when the trailer, coming from the opposite direction, suddenly made a right turn without stopping at the red light.
"The motorcyclist was unable to avoid the trailer and crashed into its left mid-section. He died at the scene due to severe injuries," he said in a statement today.
The trailer driver, who was unhurt, has been detained to assist in the investigation. A preliminary urine test returned negative.
Helmi said police have obtained a four-day remand order against the lorry driver from the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate's Court.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving causing death.
He also reminded all road users to remain alert and obey traffic signals, especially at intersections, to avoid similar tragedies.
A video of the crash has since gone viral on social media.
