Darts legend Phil Taylor officially retires from playing as The Power thanks fans for 'wonderful memories' from career that saw him win 16 world titles

Daily Mail21-05-2025

Darts icon Phil Taylor has officially announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 64.
The 16-time world champion retired from professional sport in 2018, having lost the World Championship final against first-time winner Rob Cross.
He did, though, continue to play in exhibition games and at senior level, competing in the first three Senior World Championships between 2022 and 2024, but announced recently that he would soon step away from the sport due to injury.
'The Power' won 87 major titles in his career as he reigned dominant in the sport, with Luke Littler tipped to chase his record of 16 Championships at world level.
He had been due to play in the World Senior Darts Masters in November, but a hip injury caused him to withdraw.
And now, seven years on from his professional retirement, the star has announced he will never be picking up a dart competitively again.

In a statement, he said: 'After a long and fantastic career over the last 40 years, I announce that from today I am retiring from playing darts.
'It has been a privilege to be part of such a vibrant and passionate community. I would like to thank each and everyone for your support through this incredible journey. Your encouragement and enthusiasm have been the driving force behind my success.
'A journey which has enabled me to achieve more than I could have ever imagined. As one chapter closes, another one opens. This transition opens up new opportunities for me to explore and engage with the sport in different ways.
'I look forward to meeting fans old and new around the country and I will continue to update the website with future announcements. Please stay tuned for upcoming events, appearances, and projects that I am excited to undertake.
'Thank you once again for all the wonderful memories.'
Taylor won the last of his 16 world titles against Michael van Gerwen in 2013. He beat the Dutchman - who had long been tipped to be his successor - 7-4. He lost the final after that in both 2015 and 2018.

Sheffield Wednesday charged by EFL over failure to pay wages on time

June 4 (Reuters) - The English Football League (EFL) has charged Sheffield Wednesday with multiple breaches of regulations after the second-tier club failed to pay players' wages on time. The club had already been placed under registration embargoes in the last two seasons having received a six-point deduction during the 2020-21 season for breaching profit and sustainability rules. "The owner of Sheffield Wednesday, Dejphon Chansiri, has also been charged with causing the club to be in breach of EFL regulations despite his commitment to fund the cash requirements of the club," the EFL said in a statement on Tuesday. "All charges relate to both the Ultimate Beneficial Owner and the club failing to meet their obligations to pay players' wages on time and in full in March and May 2025." Thai businessman Chansiri, who took over Sheffield Wednesday in 2015, had acknowledged the charges and apologised to everyone connected with the club, the team said. "The club continue to seek a resolution regarding outstanding salaries due for the month of May at the earliest possible opportunity," it added. The club and Chansiri have 14 days to respond to the charges. Sheffield Wednesday finished 12th in the Championship in the recently-concluded season.

'Devastation' as burglars trash Allestree cricket clubhouse

Members of a community-run cricket club in Derby were left "close to tears" after its clubhouse was trashed in a "mindless" burglary. Allestree Cricket Club discovered its facility had been broken into on Sunday night, with more than £2,500 worth of damage caused. Furniture and toilets were damaged along with team trophies and a number of items were taken from behind the Police said it was investigating the burglary and has urged anyone with information to come forward. The club was set up in 1860 and has been based at the Allestree Recreation Ground for more than 120 years. While the club had been broken into "once or twice over the years", its director James Windscheffel, said it had never faced deliberate damage on this scale. "It's not even just someone coming in and rooting around trying to find something and off they go," he said."They've gone in and they've tried to cause as much damage as they possibly can do and leave the club in an absolute state."Club members had only recently upgraded the facility with new benches in changing rooms, fresh paint and new seating in the social area. Repairs to the clubhouse and replacing stolen items are expected to cost upwards of £2,500. The teams' trophies and photographs were also damaged, Mr Windscheffel added the cricket club rented the council-owned pavilion for a "peppercorn rent" and it was not a large "fashionable" club with significant cash reserves. "To see the devastation that they [the perpetrators] caused - and it is devastation - it's a lump in the throat moment," he said. He added: "This is just nasty, nasty behaviour and it serves no purpose. "Nobody's running down the road with a haul of gold and silver on their back, it's just damage. "The impact it has on others must always be greater than any warped satisfaction they get at the time." Despite the upset the break-in caused, Mr Windscheffel said he and club were heartened by more than £4,000 in donations made to a crowdfunding page it set up in the hopes of raising repair funds. The club said a clean-up operation started on Tuesday, after police forensic officers had left the scene.A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police said: "Officers are investigating a burglary at Allestree Cricket Club sometime between 20:00 BST on Saturday 31 May and 08:20 BST on Monday." "A quantity of alcohol and equipment was stolen along with damage caused to the premises."
