Where to start with: John Burnside

The Guardian4 hours ago
John Burnside was one of those rare prolific writers whose quality and care was not diminished by the apparent ease with which words arrived. His life's work is like a dark, glittering, ethereal yet earthy river of thought, full of angels, ghosts, nocturnes, animals. These are books as brimming with spirit and light as they are with eroticism and violence. If there is one word I would use to summarise Burnside's work, it's grace. He was a graceful writer, in terms of his elegance, but also one concerned with redemption and the moments of light that emerge from sorrow and great pain.
Burnside died in 2024 at the age of 69, not long after being awarded the David Cohen prize for literature, an award that recognises a lifetime's achievement. Before that, he had won just about every award going in the poetry world: the Forward prize, the TS Eliot prize and the Whitbread book award among them.
Though Burnside was best known as a poet, he wrote novels, memoir and literary history, too. If the dark places of the human experience attract you, you're in luck; but if not, don't be put off. Burnside is also a writer of warmth, humour and deep humanity.
Waking Up in Toytown is the second in Burnside's trio of memoirs. Disquieting, lyrical and precise, it covers alcoholism, madness, self-destruction, the search for normality and being 'a full-scale lunatic'. Burnside also writes about the seductiveness of darkness and oblivion, the vertigo of falling in love, the strange sensation of hearing voices, of seeing things. But all the while this is a deep, philosophical book about lives falling apart and being re-made. It is rich in language, hypnotic in its logic, utterly captivating in its vision of brokenness and redemption.
Burnside wrote 11 novels. If you were to pick up one, I'd recommend Glister. It's like a series of True Detective set in a post-industrial Scottish village, where a disused chemical factory has poisoned the landscape. As boys go missing in the poisoned woods year after year, the novel charts a disturbing path rich with mystery, unafraid of exploring the violence we commit against each other and against the planet. Chilling and completely compelling.
If you want to head straight for the masterpiece, and the one that captures the essence of Burnside's exquisite achievement in poetry, his 2011 collection Black Cat Bone is the one to read. It was awarded the TS Eliot prize and the Forward prize, making Burnside one of just four poets to have won both of the UK's most prestigious poetry awards for one book. Black Cat Bone has a mythic, ritualised quality, with a strange ethereality that pushes us, poem by poem, from the brink of the known into a world immanent with spirits and haunting intimations. It repays many, many readings.
In The Music of Time: Poetry in the Twentieth Century, Burnside moves through his personal life and those of writers responding to war, political turmoil and environmental damage. This is a book where Burnside shows us how to read, how to live a life formed by reading, how poetry knits its way into our minds. It is also a curiously uplifting, rousing book. 'Hope', he writes, 'is of the essence for all poets. We might even say that to make a poem at all is an act of hope.'
I Put a Spell on You is Burnside's final memoir, though it pushes the bounds of that form. Taking a song as the title for each chapter, it is a book about love, glamour, enchantment and the erotic thrill of the wild. It captures his tenderness and humanity, exploring masculinity and art, the blues, Nina Simone, the Temptations and murder ballads, all the while telling with breathtaking magic how it feels to fall, sumptuously and decadently, in love.
Winner of the Whitbread prize for poetry, Burnside's 2000 collection The Asylum Dance is a lucid, hymn-like series of poems that moves between ideas of home and the urge to leave. There are the lights of fairgrounds, villages, ships at sea. Structured around four longer poems, The Asylum Dance has all of Burnside's trademark visionary music. These poems might require some work, but they wash over you like a fresh salt tide, buoyant, bearing the reader to unexpected, mysterious places of trial and epiphany.
An elegiac evensong of a book, The Empire of Forgetting is Burnside's last collection, and is a resonant demonstration of his lasting power. These are poems of autumn, of the misty woods, of 'ghost lights', wings, the haunting sounds of distant birds. Voices call through the evening dusk, beckoning us home, and though mortality is always present, there is too a sense of rest and the beauty of night-music. Burnside leaves us at dusk: 'Fog on the roads, the harvest gathered in / by lantern-light; our work, if it is work, / accomplished.'
The Empire of Forgetting is now published in paperback by Jonathan Cape alongside reissues of Burnside's memoirs: A Lie About My Father, introduced by Megan Nolan; Waking Up in Toytown, introduced by Sarah Perry; and I Put a Spell on You, introduced by Seán Hewitt. Cristiano Ronaldo forked out eye-watering seven-figure sum on model Georgina Rodriguez's incredible diamond engagement ring

Cristiano Ronaldo dropped an eye-watering amount on his fiancee Georgina Rodriguez 's engagement ring, according to experts. The newly-engaged couple announced they are set to wed after almost a decade together in an Instagram post on Monday evening. But fans' eyes were drawn to the dazzling rock on Georgina's finger, as she flashed her jaw-dropping ring for all to see. Laura Taylor, engagement ring specialist at Lorel Diamonds, said: 'Georgina Rodríguez's engagement ring from Cristiano Ronaldo is an extraordinary piece, featuring what appears to be an oval-cut diamond in the 15 to 20 carat range. 'Oval cuts are known for their brilliant faceting, which maximises sparkle and gives the stone a bright, lively appearance from every angle. 'The centre stone is flanked by substantial side diamonds, adding even more sparkle and making the already impressive main stone look even larger. 'A diamond of this size is almost certainly set in platinum for security, which also enhances its colour and gives the ring a timeless finish. 'This is a show-stopping ring, and easily among the most impressive we've seen in recent years, which feels perfectly suited to one of football's most famous couples. 'If the diamond is natural and of exceptional quality in the D-F colour range with flawless or near-flawless clarity, its value could easily exceed £1.5 million.' Meanwghile, founder of engagement ring company The Clear Cut, Olivia Landau, said: '[The ring] features an oval diamond estimated to be over 10 carats... 'Possibly as large as 15 carats. It appears to be flanked by two smaller oval diamond side stones, each approximately 2–3 carats. 'The setting is platinum with double claw prongs on all four corners. Depending on the quality, the ring and center diamond are likely worth several million dollars.' Confirming their engagement, the Argentine-Spanish model, 31, wrote: 'Yes I do. In this and in all my lives.' Up until now, Georgina has worn a different diamond ring, but the couple were understood to have not been engaged during this time. Georgina and Ronaldo's celebrity pals congratulated the pair on their engagement in the comments Fans have speculated the pair got engaged last month after the model shared pictures of a bridal-themed dinner, complete with 'C heart G' pillows, a six-piece band and stunning white flower arrangements. She also wore a giant sparkler on her wedding ring finger, hinting at the pair's secret engagement. Georgina and Ronaldo's celebrity pals congratulated the pair on their engagement in the comments. Lauren Sanchez Bezos commented: 'So happy for you. ❤️', Fellow WAG Taylor Ward wrote: 'Amazing, congratulations ❤️❤️' Charlotte Tilbury wrote: 'Darling, what fabulous news!!! Sending you both heartfelt congratulations and so much LOVE!!' Piers Morgan penned: 'Wonderful news! Many congrats to you both'. The footballer only recently hit the headlines when he admitted that he would not propose to the mother of two of his children until everything had 'clicked'. He said on Netflix: 'I always tell her, 'when we get that click.' Like everything with our life, and she knows what I'm talking about. 'It could be in a year or it could be in six months or it could be in a month. I'm 1000% sure that it'll happen.' The couple have been in a relationship since 2016 and have daughters Alana, seven, and two-year-old Bella together. She is also the stepmother of his other three children. In an interview for her Netflix reality show I Am Georgina, the model told how she has been teased by friends over when she will get married. She said: 'They're always joking about the wedding. 'When is the wedding?' Since Jennifer Lopez's song 'The Ring Or When' came out, they started singing it to me. And well, this is not up to me.'

Christine McGuinness showed clear signs she wanted to leave the programme during the first episode of Celebs Go Dating on Monday night. The model, 37, who announced she had quit the show in May, appeared visibly uncomfortable during the mixer when the celebs were tasked to pick someone to take to Ibiza in the hope they would get closer. But all seemed too much for Christine as she insisted on 'taking a minute' outside with her fellow co-star Kerry Katona. She panicked: 'I need a minute, I can go for a minute can't I? I don't want to just take someone away. 'How can I go abroad with someone I've just met? This is just not normal.' When it was announced she would appear on the show, it was revealed that Christine would be up for dating both men and women on the show. Christine revealed it felt 'too soon' for her to date so publicly following her divorce from ex-husband Paddy McGuinness. She had already flown to Ibiza to begin filming the series with the rest of the cast but told fans she was 'returning home to her family' after having a change of heart. Revealing the news on Instagram, she said: 'I joined Celebs Go Dating with great intentions but have realised that dating on a public platform and the attention is brings is just too soon for me.' Christine also said that she may appear in the future, adding: 'They've said the door is always open for me which I'm so grateful but for now I'm returning home to my family.' Talking on Celebs Go Dating, Christine said: 'I feel like I'm a couple of steps away from being my new self and not 'Paddy's wife'. I'm coming out of the transition part. 'I am single and I absolutely do love women. I'd love to explore that more and I definitely see that's where I'm more comfortable.' She added: 'When I was a teenager, I dated men and women before I was married and now I'm really, really just enjoying spending time with women. 'For the last three years, I've only ever dated women. I was never heterosexual, I've never labelled myself anything other than Christine, to be honest.' But all seemed too much for Christine as she insisted on 'taking a minute' outside with her fellow co-star Kerry Katona She panicked: 'I need a minute, I can go for a minute can't I? I don't want to just take someone away. How can I go abroad with someone I've just met? This is just not normal' When it was announced she would appear on the show, it was revealed that Christine would be up for dating both men and women on the show Christine was married to TV presenter Paddy for 11 years before they split for good in 2022. After they stayed living together for the sake of their three children - twins Leo and Penelope, and daughter Felicity, who have all been diagnosed with autism - the exes finalised their divorce out of court last summer. Christine revealed how 'difficult' the break-up had been for her after the pair's marital home, a Cheshire mansion worth £6.5million, was put on the market. She said: 'I've never spoken about the reasons for our divorce, and I don't know if I ever will. 'It was a difficult time. It wasn't something that, you know, I just decided to do overnight, or that we chose to do. 'We tried, and, yeah, there just, unfortunately, there was no repairing it, you know?' Discussing her appearance on the show before deciding to quit, the TV personality has admitted that she hasn't 'dated much before' so this will be a new experience for her. She said: 'I'm really excited to be joining the agency, I'm going to have a summer of fun! Who knows what might happen? I've not really dated much before, so I feel like I'm doing a crash course! 'I'm looking forward to getting to know the other celebs and I'm especially looking forward to the coaching side of things with the agents. I think that's going to be good for me.'

Princess Andre tipped to become the UK's answer to Kylie Jenner with her budding career as a makeup mogul

Princess Andre has reportedly set her sights on becoming the UK's answer to Kylie Jenner with her own billion pound make-up empire. The daughter of Peter Andre and Katie Price, who has just turned 18, has given fans a new insight into her hopes for the future with her new TV show, which follows her attempts to establish herself as a makeup mogul. Princess is also said to have made it clear that while her mum, 47, made her name as a glamour model, she has no intentions of following in her footsteps. An insider told The Sun: 'Princess has got ambitions of being the next Kylie Jenner. 'Everyone's been saying they can see that happening, with her own TV show and a make-up range coming out. She also has lots more deals in the pipeline to consider. 'When Katie says that Princess is "following in her footsteps", she isn't.' The Princess Diaries follows the youngster's life as she navigates launching her own makeup line - as well as the challenges that have naturally come with growing up in the spotlight. In one scene from the new show, Princess, in stark contrast to her body-confident mum, actually worries that her dress could be see-through in any way. The source said: 'She is gonna be like the next big thing, someone who young people can relate to.' Their confidence in Princess's popularity has not been in vain either and her show was number one on ITV after its launch on Sunday. However, despite finding early fame through her parents, Katie has vowed not to promote her daughter's show because she believes she has been cast aside by the 18-year-old's management team. Katie, who does not appear in The Princess Diaries, said she feels 'disrespected and disregarded' by the talent agents who also notably work with her ex-husband Peter Andre. She said: 'I don't need it rubbed in my face of everyone playing happy families.' The Princess Diaries follows the youngster's life as she navigates launching her own makeup line - as well as the challenges that have naturally came with growing up in the spotlight - Princess is pictured here as a baby with her parents and brother Junior, now 20 Katie stressed: 'I want the best for Junior and Princess, always, I'll never get in the way of that. 'But what hurts my feelings, and it does upset me, is when your kids grow up, you go to their assemblies, you go to their Christmas things, you go to their awards, you go to their football matches or gymnastics, you're involved in everything they do. 'Knowing what my career has been, Princess has taken that same path, trying to do the same as I've done, which I absolutely love and adore of Princess. 'But I have not been allowed to go on any photoshoot, no signings or Superdrug openings or anything like that. 'I'm not allowed and I'm not welcome. They think I am trash basically.'
