Britain's rarest car once loved by budget drivers is revealed – with just 2 left in circulation

The Sun17-05-2025

A ONCE-popular French hatchback, long loved by budget drivers, has been driven to near extinction — with just two left on Britain's roads.
The Renault 6 TL, a 1970s favourite known for its blend of practicality and modest luxury, is believed to be one of the rarest cars in the UK today.

First spotted on British roads in late 1969, the Renault 6 TL was especially popular among drivers looking for comfort and reliability without breaking the bank.
Manufactured in France and later in Spain, the TL model launched in 1974 as a more refined version, boasting extras like front disc brakes, heated rear windows, reclining seats, childproof locks, and winding windows.
The model was based on the Renault 4 platform but aimed slightly higher up the market, appealing to motorists who wanted something trendier without the price tag of the larger Renault 16.
Its 1.1-litre engine delivered a smooth drive, and the generous boot space made it ideal for family holidays or country getaways.
In its heyday, the Renault 6 TL offered what many considered 'affordable luxury.'
Priced at just over £1,000 in the mid-1970s, it was costlier than rivals like the Citroën Dyane but offered better performance and features.
Car experts at the time praised its economy and character, calling it more distinctive than many of its competitors.
Production of the Renault 6 ended in France in 1980 and finally ceased in Spain in 1986 after over 1.7 million units were built.
But like many workhorse vehicles of the past, it slowly vanished from British roads as newer models took over and older ones succumbed to rust and wear.
Today, only two roadworthy Renault 6 TLs are left in the UK – one of which belongs to Terence Byrne.
Based in County Down, Terence bought his 1974 TL in memory of his late wife, Jennifer, who adored the model.
He named the car JEN 74, and it now serves as a tribute to her, turning heads at classic car shows.
The vehicle had once replaced his Ford Escort Mk1 back in the 1980s, proving to be just as capable across fields and stone tracks as it was on the road.
Decades later, after reconnecting with the Renault Classic Car Club, Terence was finally able to find another – travelling all the way to Wimborne, Dorset, to bring JEN 74 home.
Classic car enthusiasts say the Renault 6 represents a forgotten chapter in motoring history – a time when cars were simple, practical and built to last.
While it might lack the sleek styling of modern hatchbacks, it more than makes up for it in charm and character.

Ferrari Has Two New Special Supercars On The Way

Two New Trademarks Point To Special-Edition Ferraris Ferrari isn't known for imaginative model names. Typically, a new Ferrari car comes with wordsoup as a description (see 296 GTB, F80, F12berlinetta, et cetera), but the saving grace of these seemingly jumbled letters and numbers is that they hold meaning, albeit often tenuous. With that in mind, we have a task to accomplish: deciphering the meanings behind two new trademarks Ferrari has filed in Italy. 0:02 / 0:09 2025 Ford Maverick: 4 reasons to love it, 2 reasons to think twice Watch More The names are SC40 and CZ26, and although all we have to go on are those eight characters, the fact that Ferrari names are never random should act as a guiding light. CZ26 Sounds Very Specific Both trademark applications include a request for use on cars, though whether the CZ26 or SC40 names are for limited-production or one-off vehicles remains to be seen. The Ferrari J50, for example, was a 10-unit special edition made to celebrate 50 years of Ferrari in Japan. Using that logic, 'CZ' could refer to the Czech Republic, but Ferrari celebrated 25 years in the country in 2023, so we doubt the name refers to a limited run of 26 vehicles, or as a celebration of anything Ferrari-related in the country 25 years ago. Especially since the trademark was applied for in Italy. Instead, it seems more likely that the letters refer to an individual buyer (if you know of any multi-millionaires with suitable initials, please get in touch). The digits could refer either to the production run or the year in which it will be revealed, or they could simply refer to the commissioning buyer's birthdate; anything is possible. Alternatively, maybe the number refers to the Ferrari 250 LM that won the 1966 Paris 1000 Km. This was wearing #26, and so have various past and present Ferrari entrants to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. SC40 Could Be Much More Interesting The second trademark is for SC40, and that instantly sounds intriguing. Not only does it immediately call to mind the Ferrari F40, but S and C are numbers that have far more potential applications. Words like scuderia and corsa jump to mind, but again, anything could happen. Still, we'd like to pursue the theory of an F40 tribute. Scuderia Ferrari Formula One driver Sir Lewis Hamilton has expressed an interest in reinventing the F40 for the modern age, though the name F44 has been floated for this potential project. The Ferrari F40 was launched almost 40 years ago, in 1987, and we doubt Ferrari would launch a tribute as important as that without the timing being perfect. 1985 was the year of the 3.2 Mondial variants, the 328 variants, and the 442 Gran Turismo, so we can't see much inspiration from that era. Ferrari didn't even exist in 1940, so there are no clues there either. Perhaps here, the numbers refer to displacement, right? Well, with Ferrari moving away from V8s in favor of V6s, and its V12 displacing some 6.5 liters, we still don't have an answer. We'll just have to wait and see what Ferrari has planned. Until then, let's argue in the comments. Source: Ferrari About the Author Sebastian Cenizo View Profile

Volkswagen Rethinks EV Future With A New Twist

The German automaker has delayed its Scalable Systems Platform for a good reason, and now we know why. Why All-New Scalable Systems Platform Was Delayed Volkswagen is in the middle of a turnaround strategy that will put the German brand back on track. Its grand plan was revealed earlier this year, with nine new models to be launched in the next few years. The all-new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP)is part of this movement, though various issues have plagued its rollout, including software issues related to Cariad. Now, VW has revealed an update about the SSP, and it's a major one that involves internal combustion engines. 0:04 / 0:09 Audi A5 replaces A4: So, what's changed? Watch More After years of touting the SSP as its clean-sheet EV architecture, the German auto giant has revealed that SSP will also support internal combustion engines, though not in the traditional sense. Instead, VW is pivoting toward range-extending gas engines that generate electricity to charge batteries, not drive the wheels. Impact On Future Models While VW may tout this as an evolution of the SSP architecture, the incorporation of a range-extender engine is more like a safety net for the brand. At this point, several automakers have already backpedaled from their all-EV push due to waning demand for BEVs. VW is one of them, and this is the company's solution. The SSP architecture will still be fully electric at heart, but it will also accommodate range extenders. These are internal combustion engines used solely to generate power for the battery, with no mechanical link to the wheels. Nissan's e-Power, which is reportedly reaching the US market, operates on the same principle as VW's SSP. The defunct Mazda MX-30 also got a similar upgrade with a rotary range extender, while VW Group's own Scout brand is also launching in the market with the same technology. Next VW Golf Will Use SSP Architecture One of SSP's headline vehicles will be the ninth-generation VW Golf, which will be fully electric and will coexist with the current Mk8 Golf for several years. It's unclear whether there will be a range-extended version of the Golf, but we expect the model to arrive by 2029, so there is an allowance for adjustments to VW's plan. In China, the world's biggest automotive market, Volkswagen already previewed the ID. Era concept, which features a gasoline-powered range extender. Of note, EV demand in China is also dropping, with range-extended EVs and plug-in hybrid gaining popularity. Despite the expanded capabilities, VW doesn't expect this range-extended EV strategy to take hold everywhere. According to VW CEO Thomas Schäfer, Europe is unlikely to see SSP-based range extender models where plug-in hybrids remain the more viable option. Here's What Lucid's Future Models Will Be Called

Trademarks Hint At Affordable EVs to Rival Tesla Several new trademarks have revealed the possible names for Lucid's next models, as the company looks to expand its lineup beyond the full-size Air sedan and Gravity three-row SUV. Considering Lucid already occupies these segments, these future models should hopefully be more affordable, giving the brand higher-volume alternatives to the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y. The brand has, after all, already teased a midsize SUV and confirmed a Model Y competitor. Here's a look at all the latest Lucid trademarks. Source: Lucid Lucid Earth Dream Edition The Lucid Earth trademark already popped up a few weeks ago, and it has since been confirmed that this will be a new smaller EV. It's set to go into production in 2026, when it should compete head-on with the Tesla Model Y. The newest trademark is for an Earth Dream Edition, filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office, adding further confirmation that this is a new Lucid production model. The brand's Dream Edition EVs are typically sold for a limited time after a new car is launched. They offer the best outputs and features, and also carry the highest prices. A price of under $50,000 and a class-leading range are expected for this model, but the Dream Edition could cost more than this. Lucid Ocean Another trademark, this time filed with the Government of Canada, is for the Lucid Ocean. If that name sounds familiar, you may be thinking of the Fisker Ocean SUV. However, Fisker's recent bankruptcy presumably means that the 'Ocean' name is back up for grabs, and since it fits in thematically with other Lucid model names, it's a logical choice. It's not known what vehicle the Ocean name could apply to, but a smaller sedan to slot in below the Air sounds like a logical move. It would give the brand a true BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE rival, leaving the Air to do battle with the i7 and EQS. However, he was specifically referring to the Lucid Space Concept, which doesn't refer to a particular model, but references one of the brand's philosophies. Rawlinson was explaining how Lucid cars free up an amount of interior space beyond the physical footprint of a given vehicle. Once again, though, 'Space' fits in well with other Lucid names like Gravity and Air, referencing the elements and/or the natural environment. Last year, Lucid ruled out a station wagon, but was open to the idea of a more rugged vehicle. Given the brand's luxury focus, a classy coupe doesn't seem out of the question, but electric coupes are exceedingly rare. The word 'Space' sounds applicable to something larger, but the Air and Gravity are already full-size models, so it's anyone's guess what this model could be. Source: Lucid Final Thoughts While Lucid has not yet come close to toppling Tesla, it's doing what a lot of other EV startups couldn't: surviving. And, with only two high-end models on sale presently, the potential for growth is enormous if the brand launches two or more models that are more accessible. The Earth is the only one that looks like a guarantee, but we can't wait to see the possibilities of the Ocean and Space nameplates. About the Author Karl Furlong View Profile
