Akash Deep reveals sisters cancer battle, dedicates match-winning show to her

Mint6 days ago
Birmingham, Jul 7 (PTI) "Every time I had the ball in my hand, her thoughts would cross my mind," said an emotionally overwhelmed Akash Deep as he dedicated his stellar performance in India's jinx-breaking Test win over England to his sister, who is battling cancer for the past two months.
Having taken 10 wickets in the series-levelling 336-run victory at the Edgbaston here on Sunday, the 28-year-old Bengal speedster well and truly arrived on the big stage with a performance of a lifetime on a track that was, for most part, a bowler's graveyard.
"I have not spoken about this with anyone but two months back, my sister was diagnosed with cancer. She will be very happy with my performance and this will bring some smiles back," he controlled his emotions while talking to Cheteshwar Pujara on 'Jio Hotstar'.
"Every time I picked up the ball, her thoughts and picture crossed my mind. This performance is dedicated to her. I want to tell her, 'Sis, we are all with you'," he added.
Speaking about the match, he was happy that the plans and the processes that he put in place worked out wonderfully during the game.
"My main aim was to hit the seam on hard lengths and let the ball move in. In case of Joe Root, my aim was to bowl from wide off the crease and get it to shape away.
"In case of Harry Brook, I knew that he is committed on the backfoot and wanted to hit the seam hard and on fuller length, getting it to move in," he explained the planning behind his wicket-taking deliveries.
A believer of living in the moment, Akash would like to savour his match-winning performance and not think about playing at the iconic Lord's cricket ground where the next Test will be held from July 10-14.
"I haven't thought about my game-plan for Lord's. But it won't be very different from what it has been here. There would be days when it would work and there would be days, it won't work.
"Our job is to stick to our strengths and believe in our processes," he said.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test: 'If Rishabh could have...' – Ex-India cricketer slams Pant for throwing his wicket

London: India's batter Rishabh Pant tries to reach the crease during the third day of the third Test match between India and England, at the Lord's Cricket Ground, in London. (PTI Photo/R Senthilkumar)(PTI07_12_2025_000298A) Former India spinner R Ashwin lauded Rishabh Pant for batting with pain but at the same time criticised the wicketkeeper-batter for throwing away his wicket, which gave England a chance to come back in the Test on Day 3 at Lord's. Rishabh Pant overcame pain in his left index finger to score an entertaining half-century before getting run out at the stroke of lunch. With Rahul closing in on a ton at the other end, Pant attempted an avoidable quick single in the last over of the session, but England skipper Ben Stokes pulled off a brilliant direct hit running in from cover to give his team something in a session controlled by the opposition. Pant, who batted through pain due to the finger injury he suffered while keeping on Day 1, made his intentions clear even against the express pace of Archer. KL Rahul press conference: On last over fight, Rishabh Pant run out and fired up Shubman Gill "In the last two years, even when I used to watch from the dressing room, I feel like this Indian team has the ability to kill the game," Ashwin said on his Hindi YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat' . "We had the chance to kill the game on Day 3. KL Rahul was batting beautifully; he looked in absolutely pristine form. His dismissal after reaching 100 was very soft. "If Rishabh could have gone on to score a bigger score, India could have shut this game down. "If India had got 50–100 runs more, I think England would have been under severe pressure. "The way Rishabh was batting was unreal. This is what I want from Rishabh Pant. He was looking so solid. He was batting beautifully. The only way he could have got out was run out. He wanted KL Rahul to get his hundred," he added. Why Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah lost their cool in last five minutes of Day 3 vs England Rahul said he had told Pant of his plan to get to the century before the break. "Not ideal. There was a conversation a couple of overs before that: I told him [Pant] that I would get my hundred, if possible, before lunch. And with Bashir bowling that last over before lunch, I thought there was a good chance for me to get it, but, yeah, unfortunately, I hit it straight to the fielder," Rahul told reporters. "It was a ball that I could have hit for a boundary. Then he just wanted me to rotate strike and see if he could put me back on strike. But, yeah, it shouldn't have happened: a run-out at that stage really changed the momentum. "It was disappointing for both of us. Obviously, nobody wants to throw their wicket like that." 'Very Much Like A Previous Captain': Trott Takes Veiled Dig At Kohli Over Gill's Jibe

Jonathan Trott has criticised Shubman Gill's behaviour towards Zak Crawley during the Lord's Test, calling it 'acting' and setting a bad tone. Former England cricketer Jonathan Trott has said that he doesn't like the 'acting' from India skipper Shubman Gill, after the latter took a massive dig at Zak Crawley due to his delaying tactics in the final over of Day 3 of the Lord's Test, adding that Gill's behaviour was like a previous captain. With only six minutes left on the clock, the Indians were confident of bowling two overs before stumps, but Crawley took over a minute to take guard after the umpires had called play. Then Crawley stopped ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah twice in his run-up. Gill and Crawley engaged in a confrontation which could have turned uglier after the former, in some choicest language, requested Crawley to show some guts while facing Bumrah. The Indian cricketers swarmed around Crawley, with Gill charging at the former and exchanging words. Gill even made an Impact Player sign to suggest that Crawley should be substituted if he were injured. This time, the latter retorted. He was joined by his fellow opener Ben Duckett. Trott accused Gill of taking things too far with an aggressive charge towards Crawley. 'A little bit of gamesmanship, but I think England, for me, we don't know what went on when England were fielding, whether they were dishing it out. I don't like the acting from Shubman Gill," Trott said while speaking on JioHotstar. 'I just think as a captain, you set the tone. As I've said before, you know, pointing fingers and getting a little bit confrontational, very much like a previous captain, sort of getting in the face of the opposition," Trott added. 'And I just don't think that's what it's about. I think it sets a bad tone. And I'm up for being competitive and being tough on the field. I just think sometimes you've got to rise above it," Trott said. At stumps, England were 2/0 with a lead of just two runs, after both teams managed to score 387 runs in their first innings. 'Very Much Like A Previous Captain': Former England Batter Compares Shubman Gill With Virat Kohli Criticizing His Altercation During Last Over Drama At Lord's

Shubman Gill's fiery reaction to Zak Crawley's apparent time-wasting tactics near the close of day three at Lord's led to an intense on-field moment that drew sharp criticism from former England batter Jonathan Trott. The heated exchange occurred after India matched England's first-innings total of 387. With around six minutes left on the clock following the innings break, India hoped to deliver two overs before stumps. However, Zak Crawley took a considerable amount of time to prepare for Jasprit Bumrah's opening delivery. He also walked down the pitch after the second delivery and pulled away twice before the third, taking more time to reset at the crease. Gill, clearly agitated, stepped in from slip to confront Crawley, prompting Ben Duckett to intervene. Just before the fifth ball, Crawley again walked down the pitch and tapped his bat, leading to further visible frustration from India's fielders. When Bumrah delivered the fifth ball, it nipped back and struck Crawley around the fingers. Crawley immediately called for the physio. India's close-in fielders reacted sarcastically, clapping as the physio ran out, and Gill sprinted to the striker's end. He pointed at Crawley and shouted, 'Grow some f***ing balls.' Duckett stepped between them to de-escalate the situation, but the verbal exchange continued until stumps were called. Only one over was bowled before the umpires ended play. Jonathan Trott, now the head coach of Afghanistan, expressed his displeasure with Gill's conduct while speaking on JioHotstar. 'We don't know what went on when England were fielding, whether they were dishing it out. But I don't like the acting from Shubman Gill. As a captain, you set the tone,' Trott remarked. He further compared Gill's actions to those of a previous Indian captain. 'Pointing fingers and getting very confrontational, very much like a previous captain before getting in the face of the opposition. I am all for being competitive and being tough on the field, but sometimes you have to rise above it. It sets up nicely for tomorrow's play,' he added. Former India captain and head coach Anil Kumble also weighed in on the incident, suggesting that England were clearly trying to avoid facing even a single over before stumps. "At the end of 2 and a half Tests, exactly halfway through the series, there's nothing much to differentiate. And yes, you know, from an English point of view, they wanted to just face one over. Probably they didn't want to face a single over, but they ended up, because even Jofra Archer, when he got that wicket, was disappointed that he got a wicket. So, yes, in that sense, it'd be great to watch over the next two days," Kumble said.
